Common law is much more open to interpetation and reason than rigid US law that legislates shoestrings as machine guns and shit.

Basically, because everyone knows you can't have an exhaustive list of every possible legitimate reason someone might carry some kind of knife, it's just left open for judges to throw out cases brought in by police.

Of course, this can also be open to abuse -- which is why the controlled items are defined in the first place. So cops don't bring in people who have a cleaver tied to their apron because they work at a butcher shop and it's working hours but they went into the alley to toss some trash or something. But it does let them bring in chavs who prowl around at 2am carrying the same sort of knife, because the chav is clearly up to no good.

Any judge that would slam someone for actual reasonable carrying of a knife (like the aforementioned butcher) would be fuckin R O A S T E D A L I V E by the locals, so it doesn't happen.

I don't know how it works in America or anywhere else, but in a fair number of pubs that have large outdoor areas, during a sport event (that isn't tennis or cricket) you don't use glasses at all. You use plastic cups. Not that it matter to me like, only made my life easier when serving.
