It's also light weight, and sometimes that's more important than extra protection

Fucking what? Obviously if you're worried about hypothermia you'll be wearing something insulated

Because baseball hats don't stop skin cancer on ears or the back of the neck

Sun burns increase risk of BCC & SCC - therefore shade helps prevent skin cancer anon

All the hooded shirts I know are meant for insulation and not at all suited for this kind of use. Is there any necessary reason hoods shouldn't work where hats obviously do? I suspect yes, but I obviously have no experience and no facts to back up that claim.

I started wearing them in the late 90s, I figured out that hats are more appealing than sunscreen. I'm not really a military wannabe so I always bought the desert sand non camouflage one. I found sun hats made by Columbia and just wear those now. They used to make one that was desert sand and black mesh all around the head, lets lots of air through and I haven't gotten burned through it yet but I do put sunscreen on the (now bald) spots when its really sunny out. (bought 2 when I realized they were being fazed out) i still have my last cotton booney hat for when I'm working on my car, all dirty and sweat stained now. Also, the columbia hat has an elastic draw string so you don't really need the chin strap, I just flip it up in the hat before I put it on.

i work in the sun all day and burn easily. these hats save my life. its this hat or soak my head in sunscreen and burn anyway.

baseball hats don't shade your ears or neck.
>>
>>31514727
It's a lightweight, soft wide-brimmed hat. It's extremely useful. It's what I used to always wear camping. Sure, your standard grunt should generally be wearing a helmet on your average patrol, but it's still a great option, especially for unconventional type stuff of non-combat related stuff. I mean damn, keep that sun off your neck!

I never liked the look of them in uniform. It looks sloppy to me. But I'd imagine you could tuck a few rounds in the MOLLE strap going around it. I'd wear it in civies as a sun hat on one of my days where I just give no fucks.
>>
>>31519000

My bad. I meant gardening hat.
>>
>>31514727
boonies > all other hats

keeps the sun off you better than anything exept a sombrero or one of those chinese hats (which arn't bad at all)

you can fold them up unlike a lot of other hats, so you can keep them on your person

tactically advantageous, because it shades the whole head thus breaking up the light profile of the face which is instinctively noticable
also it's profile doesn't change when you look around, so it makes you marginally harder to notice for that reason

when you are lying face down, you just tip it onto the back of your head, so you can lie out in the sun if you really have to

at night you can do the same but with the hat acting as breathing space to try and keep bugs out of your mouth

dowsides:
bit of a bloody nuisance when wet, tends to flow around everywhere unlike a beanie

not compatible with a helmet

kind of hard to keep your ears warm, even with a scarf/shagme/some other scarf like thing

They tried to enforce a boonie ban in the FOBBEST of all fobs in iraq. i just wore it and never got bitched out. Its fucking issued gear. Common sense or I guess even some dick sucking moto fag didn't want to justify lighting up some Juinor Enlisted Warrior (JEW) for getting out of the sun.

>>

It has no ballistic protection which is fine considering it has no weight to it. You can water proof them or buy ones that are. Ugly is a personal preference.

As others have said it helps hide the shape of your head, blocks sun and rain more so that a baseball hat. The strap around the base of the head can hold foliage for commando camo.

In my personal usage I find it also helps to a degree in keeping brush off your face and away from your neck and ears. Also keeps pine needles and such from dropping down your shirt and being stuck in itchy limbo until you can take all your shit off.

As a civilian who wont be wearing a helmet a decent hat makes more sense since it will be on your head and not crushed up and stowed when you would have to wear a helmet in the military.

Akubra make good hats, I believe they make Stetsons under license also.

A good hat is warm when its cold, cool when its hot and makes being outside in rain alot more tolerable keeping it off your face and neck. My Akubra Territory can be completely saturated and the brim still holds its shape up. You can steam them to change the pinch you like, I prefer a campaign/montana pinch so rain doesnt pool in it.

Inside the sweatband you can easily stow a few lightweight items, personally I have a sabiki rig in mine.
