if you already have a pistol it's nice to get a pistol caliber carbine (what people typically call 'smg style' rifles) in the same caliber so you can use the same ammo in both, better yet if it uses the same mags, like some guns do. (glock mags work in the keltec sub 2000 and JR carbine, S&W 59 mags work in the marlin camp carbine)

if you dont own a pistol in any interchangeable caliber, just get a 9mm carbine because it's the most versatile, cheapest ammo. I personally don't have much experience handling specific guns you might be looking for, but that's just some general advice

I built a 9mm AR with a 5" barrel. It's pretty neat. Right now it is a "pistol" because I'm waiting for my SBR stamp to come in. Works pretty well, I got a Colt mag pattern instead of glock mag because the glock mags look retarded.

Biggest issue is the mags desu. I bought palmetto state armory 32 rounders and one of them works ok, maybe jams once per mag, but the other will jam 5-6 times per mag.

The 20rd C products mag I bought works fine. Dont know if the issue is the brand or the fact that a 32rd double stack 9mm mag is retarded.

well it's okay, slower than a pistol though


since there is no locking with a straight blowback action you immediately have the powder do two things at once

propell the bullet forward and push the cartridge and thus the bolt back

this leads to the powder gases escaping the ejection port and taking out power of the propelling motion

result of the whole thing ?
the 5.5" barrel has slightly less velocity than a 4" tilting pistol barrel
precision is great though because of the fixed non tilting barrel

the 12.5" barrel is about 100 feet faster than the pistol barrel
calculated with a locked barrel it should be around 250-300 feet faster

My LGS happened to have 3 Kel Tec Unicorn2000 Gen 2 in stock. I had absolutely zero intention of buying a gun that day, and $499 later I walked out with one of the most fun little rifles I ever owned. Now I just need a few happy sticks and I'll be good to go.

-don't always hold open in carbine
-they are single position feed and therefore shit and harder to load
-they are more expensive

5.56, 7.62x39, 7.62x35 - they can all be had in short, compact packages, whilst being more powerful than pistol calibers, even with short barrels.
