I was discussing more along the lines of 5.56 MG42 visually similar but smaller and lighter.

Was that possible or did the unique characteristics of the MG42 prevent it from occurring?

It's odd that the MG42 was adopted to fulfill the 7.62 role but never adopted to fulfill the 5.56 LMG role.
