Israel was founded by lots of American (not federal) dollars. Once we realized they could wreck shit in combat we decided to buddy up with the most formidable military in the Middle East.

The Yishuv (pre 1948 Jewish proto-government) was pretty communist. They first relied on the French for arms, but the frogs ended up stealing a ton of money.

So early on, Israel was without allies, poor, and fighting the Arab world. The situation changed in 1956 when the Suez Crisis happened.

The US realized Israel could be used as a counterweight to Soviet influence, and began selling arms to Israel. But they were too poor to buy them without loans.

But the loans were not free, and they came with the caveat that Israel had to politically rely on the U.S.

It is like how the USSR ssupported counties like NNicaragua and cuba. A state with allied views on the world geographically close to your greatest adversary. We just need some help in the region and having a totally democratic state in a region where there is no other, it is helpful.
