You can't build an immunity to visceral pain. We wouldn't have problems treating people with chronic pain (surgeries, disabling accidents, etc.) if that were the case. There just is no mechanism by which you can become "tolerant" to pain. Basically if you get shot once it's going to feel exactly the same as if you get shot again.

What can happen is that you can become accustomed to acute stress, which will strengthen your stress response. That basically means you won't be as upset when you experience pain if you experience it a lot. There are a lot of negative side effects of strengthening your stress response, however. You're going to get things like lower testosterone, muscle loss, anxiety, and depression. It's also going to reduce your ability to learn and lower your intelligence.

Anyone who is actually into serious S&M should know that you can learn resistance to some pain in some situations, but there isn't a general 'pain tolerance' you can really build up. Hot pepper, for instance, is simple to build a resistance to, but doing so does nothing for your ability to deal with tasers, whipping, insect stings, etc.

I very much doubt that you can learn to handle the pain of being stabbed or shot by exposing yourself to other painful things.

What will help is drilling appropriate responses until they become second nature and repeatedly overcoming challenges to improve your self-confidence and courage. Proving to yourself that you can handle painful insect bites is one method of doing the latter, but there are probably more constructive methods you can use.

I do think that a certain amount of blood-letting and cutting could possibly help prepare you for the psychological effects of being wounded. Shock is a major factor in wounding and it's actually possible to function after losing an alarming amount of blood which might make you think you were about to die. Living with a girl who routinely cut herself made me a lot less nervous about blood loss. However, the risks of nerve damage, infection and of course cutting too deeply and actually killing yourself make it a very foolish course of action unless you have medical training and if you have medical training you are probably familiar with injuries to the point that you aren't too nervous at the sight of your own blood.

Dangerous animals thread? Getting bit and stung by ants has never been an issue. I've never been stung by wasps or bees, I've been surrounded by them, but never stung.

Tolerance to specific pain, or in a specific situation is quite possible to build up. For example, plenty of masochists learn to take a whipping that would have a normal person breaking down in tears. Some guys learn to cope with their balls being smacked. I can handle electric shocks much better than most people after repeated exposure to them.

But this doesn't equate to general resistance to all pain. Someone can enjoy being hung from meathooks through the skin of their back but still curl up in pain when they stub their toe.
