Still talking about shit tier US fighters
Embrace the glorious master race of Russian Interceptors, of which the MiG-31 could reach mach 3.2 and deterred the SR-71. Modern stealth technology is expensive and not practical for every plane in the whole fleet, and instead ends up causing production to be limited. Also, the whole rest of the plane suffers as the exterior is designed before the interior, and the IWI Tavor showed us why that's wrong.

F-35 procurement issues aside,
>russian
>interceptor
>master race
these three things do not go together.

The MIG 35 won't be on par with F22s in any way, and the J-20 will probably fall short of any upgrades the F22 has, if any, in the next 3 to 5 years. The PAK-FA is on its way, and even that won't compete with F22s by 2020. The F35 isn't meant to compete with other air superiority jets, but given the idea that it'll be used for escort missions to some degree, I can't fathom why a better platform isn't being used. We're throwing money at a program that probably should have been scrapped as soon as the numbers started to show.

but that's a MiG-31.

STFU SHILLS!

F35 CAN DO ANYTHING! F35 BETTER THAN A-10 AT CAS!!!

>Has any weapons program ever cost so much and had so many failures?
The F-16. The F-14. The B-29.

Or the king of weapons programs for cost and many failures: The Manhattan Project.

>>Is this plane really worth all the issues when the Chinese and Russians are beefing up their air defense networks and testing Stealth fighters that will be fielded in the 2020's that will probably be near F-22 capable?
That is WHY it is worth working through all these issues, because we need a plane that can drop bombs on those air defense networks safely. It will certainly be fun when the Chinese and Russians sortie in brand new stealth aircraft that they haven't had time to develop tactics for yet, while the F-35 pilots will be well versed in the particulars of their aircraft and how to best employ them.
>Even the air force is looking toward a replacement with its Air Superiority 2030 Flight Plan.
AF is always looking forward to the next thing.
>Should we just produce a Unmanned Upgraded F22 style Fighter?
No.
> Was the JSF just a hiccup or do we need to start planning now to figure out how to prevent the various issues of the JSF and put more resources toward 6th and 7th Gen Fighters?
We are on track just carrying on with the F-35.

>F35 BETTER THAN A-10 AT CAS!!!
That isn't hard, other than making the grunts happy with the display, the A-10 is pretty shit at CAS compared to platforms like the B-1, F-16, and Apache.
>>
>>Should we just produce a Unmanned Upgraded F22 style Fighter?
When a production line for something like the F-22 is shut down, it's shut down for good. However, even if the Air Force restarted F-22 production or went to an upgraded F-22, it would suck all the available funding away from development of a true sixth-generation fighter. And the longer the sixth-generation jet takes to produce, the more time enemy counter-stealth technology will have to erode the F-22's stealth advantage.

Alternatively, what USAF is doing now is upgrading F-15s, but that means pitting revamped 45+ year old relics against more capable and modern Russian/Chinese jets. That's a band aid, not a proper solution.

You do know that Shill Salary isn't included in what they say right?

I mean considering how the A-10 couldn't even handle the Republican Guard and their shitty monkey wrench equipmen, I'd say its not exactly a high bar of quality.
