I've been shooting for years, specifically competition rimfire and airgun. Always kept one eye closed... though that's mainly because of my astigmatism and I don't want to retrain years of marksmanship going from my right hand to left.

Keep both eyes open. You'll go cross eyed where you'll see 2 sets of sights. Close your non-dominant eye briefly to see which one disappears, and then open it back up and focus on the set that did not disappear.
Takes a few minutes to get it down but once you do it'll happen naturally whenever you look down the sights.
