Tokarev M70a by Zastava
EAA witness and others are cheap. Other cz clones from turkey are generally good if you stay to a bigger name. FNS/X is decent if you can find a police stamped batch that didn't meet the requirement (decocker only, no safety, safety only no decocker, whatever I'm missing) glock brand glock is cheap ish used. Trade in m&p all basically come with night sights (extra mags aren't usually good) trade it's are decent first guns, don't ever buy a used service revolver unless it's a collectable. At this point they're either shot to hell and need work. There might be a security company moving up but it's rare enough to warrant a good Smith looking a gun over before a purchase. I like having a safety and a da/sa trigger, but a good holster makes the safety thing moot, and a consistent triggerpull is awesome.

hi-point 9mm. First hand gun i ever bought. They are heavy and ugly but you cannot destroy them. They retail for under 200$ and I have put close to 10,000 rounds through mine over the past 7 years and have never had a major issue.

What is /k/'s opinion of the S&W SD9VE?

K frame .38 Smith.
870 Remington.

Not very well built but it isn't total garbage.

Spend $150 more and get a glock

Seconded, there are better options in the same price range.

A shotgun

If you're seriously considering keeping the gun at home and never leaving with it, the ideal solution is a 12 ga shotgun. Please consider that.
If you insist on a handgun, then something full size would be best. Larger guns are easier to control and easier to aim. The full size or "long slide" glocks are great. A 357 magnum handgun 5-6 inch barrel is also great.
Other full size guns are also great.
Now if you are considering carrying this handgun in the future, you may need it a little bit smaller, so ideally you'd have your carry gun in an appropriate carry size, and then your home defense gun full size (or shotgun/rifle would be better than handgun.)

The only cheap HD guns are shotguns. Maverick 88 or IAC hawk 982. Both under 250. Add a decent light +mount for 120ish so you dont shoot your waifu/roommate/mom.
