Mossberg. Remington QC has been derp since 2008. They're current and older police/wingmasters are still good though. Just not the express models.

Mossberg.

12ga, obviously.
Preferably 12/76, minimum, for more ammo choices.

What's the difference between the mossberg 500 and the mossberg 590

yeah... maybe OP replied to his own thread?

>>31492548
590 is higher quality everything. Not necessarily worth the trouble.

Even the bottom of the barrel -tier Maverick 88 is a good pump gun.
>>
>gauge
For home defense or really for any purpose where you might have to use it on anything man-sized and above - 12 ga. No exceptions.

For smaller game hunting or for fun, get whatever guage you want. 20 ga is a good intermediate and similar to the 12 ga without all the recoil. .410 is sometimes mentioned as the best survival round (although you would have to look at other options).

On paper, the Mossberg comes out on top because of the dual extractor, the lighter aluminum receiver, etc. Not to mention Remington has had some bad quality control in recent years. Personally? I think of the Mossberg as a ghetto gun and I would take a Remington over a Mossy any day.
>>
>>31492581
I know that the 870 is made out of steel and is thus heavier

Does this make the recoil any better? Or does gun weight not matter?
>>
>>31492589
weight only reduces recoil in a noticeable manner when its drastic. the recoil pad included on the gun will make more difference on felt recoil than the extra weight
>>
>>31492589
weight in general is considered to slightly reduce the recoil, but it´s only the receiver that´s aluminum on Mossbergs.

Still, like said a few times now, the modern 870s suck ass compared to the older ones. Mossbergs still hold up, and I dig the lighter weight, the placement of the safety switch, and the gate-less feeding gap over the Remington´s designs. And yes, I´ve handled and fired both.

590 has steel trigger housing and thicker barrel and usually a bayonet mount
Probably some other things
I'd say it's the most robust pump action you can get

If you can find a prefreedom group Remington, i'd say it didn't matter, but since you're probably talking about a factory new one, i'd say get an 870.

Of course, there is the third and objectively superior option.
>>
>>31492737
>yo dawg
>>
>>31492739
>i'd say get an 870.
god damn i ballsed that up.

Get a mossberg.
>>
>>31492712
You're thinking of the 590a1. Regular 590's share the perfectly adequate polymer trigger housing and safety as the average 500. 590's have a different barrel attachment system and an open ended mag tube design. The 590a1 features heavier barrel thickness, the 590 style magazine tube, bayonet lug, and aluminum safety and trigger housing.
>>
I find that the Mossberg is easier to load since you just drop the shell in the loading port and push instead of fighting the loading gate. The Mossberg is definitely a looser action than the Remington.
>>
I advocate a mav88/500/590/590a1, op. They have an equal aftermarket to the 870, have a more natural slide release position, dual extractors vs the 870's one, an end-user replaceable ejector vs the 870's riveted one, and features an open loading gate for speedier reloads and ease of jam clearance. Plus the 870's loading gate door can pinch fingers and snag on gloves during losing.
>>
>>31492457
maverick 88
>>
>>31492861
looser in a good way? or smoother
>>
>>31492457
As much of a Remington fan boy as I am, I'd have to say Mossberg 500. It's more reliable.
>>
>>31492712
>I'd say it's the most robust pump action you can get
Honestly I'd say that belongs to either the mossberg 835 (which has been discontinued) or the Browning BPS (which took all the good things about the Ithaca 37 and made them better).

Winchester.
>>
>>31492589
Yes, an 870 is generally milder recoiling than a Mossberg 500.

However, this is only partially due to weight (even though the weight difference is significant). Mossberg uses some pretty cheap, ineffective recoil pads. That's an easy and cheap fix though.
>>
>>31492929
Mossberg feels all-around sloppy. Doesn't seem to hurt reliability any.

I don't think it's a good feel, but in a fighting gun feel really doesn't matter that much.
>>
Winchester 1300 in 12 gauge.
>>
Mossberg or if you have the money, Benelli Nova/Supernova.

I'm a fan of the Benelli, but they're a bit more pricey.
>>
>>31492929
you get a fuckload of wobble in a mossbergs forend
its by design for reliabilty but it feels unsettling when compared to other pumps
>>
>>31492739
Model 12s are expensive and rare compared to 870s/500a/1300s.

Not to mention zero aftermarket parts aside from the bayonet.
>>
>>31492966

Have a Defender courtesy of the Pima County AZ Sheriff's Department. Handles great, digests anything I put in it (including Aquila mini-shells) and the action is lickity-split.

That being said, the 870 is totally a Meme Gun now.
>>
>>31492977
>>31492999

This. The first time I held a mossy 500 I thought it was just another beat to shit weapon on its last legs that the armorers kept pushing into service. Sort of that feeling when you get into a used car where the pedals wobble and have hardly any resistance and there's two inches of play in the steering wheel. It doesn't inspire confidence.

Performed like a champ, though. Sort of like a great fuckbuddy. She's a bit loose, but she's down to take anything you can think of, and she's got it where it counts. You can even neglect her for months, and after the first pump she's ready to go like nothing even happened.
>>
>>31493014
How much would a nova run me compared to a mossy 500?
>>
>>31492511
hi newfag
>>
I prefer the ergonomics of the 870. They feel lighter and more compact.

But I'll always pick Mossberg for reliability and the ability to easily self service it.

My friend had a 870 where piece broke in the action within a month of owning it and he had to cut a rivet, pop it out, replace the piece and pin another rivet on.

Which is such a pain in the ass. On my Mossberg everything screws off with basic tools. Takes me no time at all.
>>
i have a mossberg 500 20g. it is my go to for all things shooting related (birds, clay birds, rabbits, raccoons). I have put well over 2000 shells through it with no issue other than a loose safety.

the action is just as loose and handles just like it did when i bought it.

i would get a 12 but i dont need one.
>>
>>31493844
I'm thinking about just buying a 20. I figure that's good enough for any home defense and the ammo is cheaper right?
>>
>>31493866
any weapon you are familiar with is best for home defense be it rock, paper, scissor,.....
>>
>>31493415
At least twice as much

The full-length Maverick 88 is probably the best gun you can buy in the year of 2016 for $200 though. I highly recommend it.
>>
>>31493415
Don't know off the top of my head, not a fan of novas. But i'd assume the Nova is at least $2-300 more, while also being higher quality.

But that's just what I've gathered from scattergat threads.

If you're looking for something keen to an AR with all the different toys you can put on it, whitlist still being cheap, then the 500 is the only answer.
>>
just get an ar-15 you dumbfuck why would you buy a shotgun what are you a faggot ar-15 has you covered for any firearm uses you can possibly imagine
>>
for home security i would recommend a stun gun if you have never used a gun before

Regular Novas are around the $250-$300 range.

Supernovas/Tactical models are a bit more expensive, around $400-$500.

I have a maverick 88, it simply works. Of course if you plan on shooting thousands upon thousands of rounds through it you will have to replace the forend at some point as I broke two of them. When you replace it, you might as well get the upgraded one instead. (40 bucks from mossberg) Also, rarely but possible, the feeding tray thinggy's pins can slip back into the receiver and when you pump jam up the action. Although rare, it's happened to me once and someone from here as well. Good luck op!
