Well the LSAT program is dead now. Battlerifle fags got a hold of it and there's no way it's going to be adopted:
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/09/28/back-future-textron-displays-newest-polymer-cased-telescoped-firing-rifle/
>rifle weighs 8.7 lbs bare and unloaded
>for comparison a loaded M4 + PEQ + optic weighs 8.74 lbs
>loaded 20 round magazines weigh 1 lb while a loaded 30 round STANAG magazine weighs 1 lb
>"lightweight ammo" reduces the ammo soldiers can carry by 1/3 due to weighing more than existing ammo
>fires a 6.5mm round comparable to .260 Remington
Fucking battlerifle fags, they took a lightweight design that was supposed to reduce the weight of the ammo soldiers carry and ruined it. At this point we could have just gone with a fucking modernized AR-10 in .260 Remington and saved all the fucking money they dumped into this program.

I'm okay with it. One more cool gun to collect.
>>
>>31488076
KEK! fucking called it months ago when the 6.5mm meme was lauded as the frontrunner despite weighing more than 5.56. Dumb googles, Thee WILL NEVER BE AONE ROUND OLUTION! Oh well, see you in 30 years based CTA.
>>
Well, americans innovation as usual.

I have lost hopes in this country.

Nowadays, russia does far more with their tacticool AKs.
>>
>>31488076

I don't know why you're bitching. Everything you just described sounds perfect.
>>
>>31488106
It's heavier than an M4 with optics.

Shit's fucking retarded.
>>
No big deal, the rifle was never important, it was the LMG that mattered. If the LMG proved itself then a rifle counterpart could follow, but it was never the key goal.
>>
>>31488114
The LMG is pretty dead if it cannot share ammo with well...anything else.

>guns is heavier than what it's meant to replace
>ammo is heavier than what it's meant to replace
>retarded idea that soldiers would be more effective if they had some flatter shooting 6.5mm round when the main problem with soldiers' effectiveness at longer ranges is they're own accuracy under stress, which can be better solved by giving them more ammo
>>
>>31488106
Guys carrying 10.5" MK18s aren't going to touch this shit heap. It'll be a 12lb gun by the time you add mission essential gear. Not to mention how bulky and long this gun looks. to top it off, I bet it's shit as a SBR based on how 6.5 Grendel and creedmoor performs out of tiny barrels.

They fucked up. Muh capability overmatch generals killed the greatest chance for a serious leap in firearms tech yet again.

Pic related is some measurements from earlier this year.
>>
>>31488114
This, the LSAT program is around weight reductions in crew served weapons.

>>31488124
Are you retarded? The US uses disintegrating links in the first place and no rifle in common service uses 7.62.
>>
>>31488076

I think the point is that since the autogunner and infantry are sharing the same round, you effectively spread the weight of the ammo across the whole squad.

It's an attempt to extend the range of infantry and lmg at the cost of 1800 less ammo per platoon.

No idea if that tradeoff is worth it in modern doctrine.
>>
>>31488148
>Are you retarded? The US uses disintegrating links in the first place and no rifle in common service uses 7.62.
The point of the LMG is that it's supposed to share with the rifles, at least for the US.
>>
>>31488076
>comparable to .260 Remington
I can see making it comparable to 6.5mm Grendel, but what the fuck is the average grunt going to do with a round that has similar long range ballistics to .300 WM? Who the fuck thought this was a good idea?

>>31488166
>No idea if that tradeoff is worth it in modern doctrine.
It isn't, anyone have the link to the site where some guy did the math and even in the ideal situation it ended up with more weight being carried? I need to go now.
>>
>>31488076
Telescopic was mistake.
>>
>>31488180
Thats a SAW, not an LMG. They're basically the same thing, but SAWs have the proviso of using the same ammo as the service rifle.
>>
>>31488166
It never was about ammo commonality. The LSAT rifle is just another proposed concept to sell. Realistically the weight and tremendous cost to replace the M4 outweighs to marginal ballistics improvements.

>it's supposed to share with the rifles
Show me one instance of this happening. The M110 uses different ammo from linked 7.62, the M14 isn't in widespread service, and there's no indication that we'll move back to full-sized cartridges.
>>
>>31488166
>you effectively spread the weight of the ammo across the whole squad.
Nope. One is linked, another in mags. Americans fall into muh belt-fed meme again.

>>
>>31488184
>Capability overmatch
They want every grunt to have the ability to outrange guys shooting dismounted patrols with PKMs because General Maximus Faggot thinks that's what's needed.

Literally "Fighting the Last War" the novel. We need to pivot toward Asia and stop dicking around with stupid shit. Either get a 6.5 LMG and begin to phase out 7.62 in that role or fuck off and stop wasting tax dollars imo.
>>
>>31488184

More weight can be better if that additional weight is spread out over the entire team. That would be better than having one or two ammo bearers get to feel their knees slowly disintegrating because they are stuck hauling all the m80 because some dickhead in the next village might have a PKM.

Whether or not a platton can handle an overall decrease of roughly 2000 total rounds will be the deciding factor.
>>
>>31488197
Jesus christ, SAW and LMG should be the same thing, because LMG is shit at suppression compared to MMG.
>>
>>31488101
>I have lost hopes in this country.
>hopes

t. Vatty pretending to be an american
>>
>>31488215
>Whether or not a platoon can handle an overall decrease of roughly 2000 total rounds will be the deciding factor.

We already know the answer is no from when we tested the M14 and found that once you achieved fire superiority and moved to the next position you were left hanging out with nothing but your dicks since you couldn't carry enough ammo.
>>
>>31488209
Or just adopt this.
http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2012/05/29/uk-nz-adopting-fn-minimi-7-62mm/
>>
>>31488208

I thought the LSAT LMG took 100 round magazines instead of belt fed. If not, isn't that kind of defeating the whole point of a unified caliber?
>>
>>31488239
>http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2012/05/29/uk-nz-adopting-fn-minimi-7-62mm/
This is objectively superior to 7.62 in every way except (possibly) barrel life though.

It's perfect in that you get greater range from GPMG and you can give more ass to platoons who think 5.56 can't suppress.

I have no problems with this concept as a GPMG. As a 5.56 replacement for M4s? Nope.
>>
>>31488209
They needed to make DMR with "capability overmatch". You literally need x100 less of them then carbines so you really could chamber it any snowflake cartridges and procure it yesterday for fighting in Afghanistan for spare change budget. But nooo, once again they picked up universal joint solution that goes into every hole.
>>
>>31488076

>fires a 6.5mm round comparable to .260 Remington

This I don't understand. They should have gone with 6.5 Grendel.
>>
>>31488254
Why shoot weak bullet when you could shot powerful? 6.5 Grendel is baby of AR-15 platform limitations. If you abandon AR-15 no need to stick with Grendel.

Aren't they stupid?
>>
>>31488261

Because you'd be able to fit 25 rounds in a standard magazine as opposed to 20.

Goddamn, Russia continues to amaze.

Such simple goddamn concept.

What's the barrel length?

They haven't seen action yet.

Better pass that shit to the syrians.

Their 7.62CT is same size as 6.5CT. In this light any size gains from stepping from "magnum" 6.5CT down to "Grendel" 6.5CT looks like negligible.
