dfndr plates look well within reach...still pricey but I'd pretty much have the 1100 saved in the 2+ months I'd be waiting on AR500 plates

Thanks for the heads up!! Also: SAPI vs Shooter cuts?
>>
>>31474491
for me
swimmer>shooter>sapi

I like the more aggressive cuts it makes it easier to shoulder the larger caliber funs, lightens the weight, and makes it accessible to reach for your IFAK with your off hand if you were to place it down your cummerbund.
>>
>>31474600
makes sense. Shooter seems as good as it usually gets, though I wonder about Advanced shooter cuts, multi-curve, etc.

Going through the youtube content now...really good suggestion bro, thank you
>>
>>31474687
multi-curve is just a comfort thing
Makes the hell of working in armor for extended periods suck less.

problem being with poly plates is it isn't rated for up to m855 which is kinda the problem with poly plates
as bulletproofme wrote about here
http://www.bulletproofme.com/RP-Polyethylene.html

here is a video where someone shot the dfndr armor with m855
https://youtu.be/ZvDTCDcWbNw?t=3m23s

quite frankly it's a tossup for the end user to decide if it's worth it to save the weight or not, they're are supposedly coming out with a lvl3X but who knows how thick/heavy they're going to be and when it will be available for the plebs.

I have mixed feelings about level 3+
It is good to have plates that can stop M193, but AR500 3+ with buildup costs like $275 if I remember correctly. You're literally $25 away from some cheap ceramics.

If you're going concealable slickster, why not level 3A inserts?
>>
>>31475049
Heretic!
Honestly, they're just more comfortable to run because the controls are where they need to be, and you're not experiencing hot brass and gas eject out towards you.

Why not suit a rifle to yourself the most possible?
>>
>>31475075
>Why not suit a rifle to yourself the most possible?

I learned shooting standard actions, so a special lefty gun feels wrong. I also like that I can use pretty much any gun my buddy's hand me without being awkward.

Honestly, with ARs all the shooting stuff is equal with righties. I am slower on tacticool speed reloads, but am well set for retention reloads.

And shooting AKs is SOOOO much easier as a lefty. I can smoothly change mags and charge the gun all with my right hand without having to twist and turn it around like righties.

It's your gun, so do whatever with it. It's just my initial reaction that it looks a bit silly, nothing more.
>>
Asking again, how is the Holosun auto on/off feature?
>>
>>31475061
Cheap ceramics are 150 a plate. Lightweight cheap ceramics are the same.
>>
>>31475098
Nah dude I get it. AR's are basically the only guns that are easily made native left handed. Every other gun I've owned and shot has been right handed. All you have to do it adapt. But if it's a gun I want to run often, I just would rather have the controls exactly where they are best, without the need to adapt. It's kinda like those guys that put the fagpul lever on their AR that operates the bolt catch and mag release, just hopefully a lot less gay.

Is it better to size up or size down for plate carriers?

I just measured my chest at 40.5 in a t-shirt.

I'm 6'0", 170ish lbs if that helps.

For $300 you can get a pair level IV ceramics. Unless the AR500 steel is somehow lighter than the ceramics in question, I don't understand why you would go with level 3+ vs Level IV.

The multi-hit capability of steel is literally a meme.

Level IV ceramic plates can be had for $150~ each.
BUT
You have to be aware that it's usually the older NIJ .04 tested and heavy ones.

Newer NIJ .06 plates will cost more, even more if you want multi-curve.

Light weight lvl IV ceramics will cost you a lot per plate.

The Mayflower APC is quite minimalist despite its resemblance to the 6094. Having owned both the APC weighs 2/3rds as much as the 6094 and is within spitting distance of the JPC.

Size-wise it holds your plates and has molle and not much else. Very efficient design that doesn't impede movement

It is literally a JPC but better

I can somewhat agree in that with the harness it is bulkier than a JPC, although only slightly.

As to the PC setup, you're wrong desu

It's just something that you have to see for yourself to understand

If anyone has questions about it I can answer. Just the harness itself is pure fucking magic, like wearing a hug from Caleb Crye

False. The AVS configured the same as an equivalent JPC 2.0 is actually $60 cheaper direct from Crye.

Word order in Russian is not nearly as important for meaning as in English.

You can pretty much throw all the words for each clause in a sentence in any order and still more or less get your point across.
>>
>>31480970
I just checked and I wouldn't say they'd fit into the M size platebag, they're too wide by about 2cm, my plates are already pretty much rock solid in there and they're about 255mm, of course you also have to take the thickness into account, if it's thinner than my 1 inch plates then it could possibly make it work, but I'm not sure.

>buying a minimalist plate carrier for twice the industry standard pricing is a good deal

Seriously though I want to love the AVS but Crye pricing is not competitive by any means. The AVS is a success because SOCOM had the money to go full retard and they wanted modularity.

I can go out and buy a Mayflower APC that has pretty much identical functionality to a AVS (without harness) and arguable better functionality (side plate pockets by default, soft armor pockets in the c-bund, built in kangaroo pocket) for $80 more.
>>
>>31481212

Trauma pads are bullshit. It's literally a sheet of closed cell foam inside a nylon bag. You could make one yourself for $20. Notice that none of the reputable armor manufacturers that focus on the military or law enforcement market sell them (Safariland, LTC, Paraclete, etc). Hell the padding inside my LBT 6094 is closed cell foam. None of this bullshit matters, NIJ certified armor has to pass backface deformation requirements and if they pass those you're fine with or without any padding.

Also look into AT Armor.

No, the Rangers requisitioned contracts from gear manufacturers and purposely requested a grayer green. They wanted to be special which is also why they have different PT uniforms. That's strange considering the fact that 1stSFODD is actually comprised of 70% former Rangers. It's also strange that he trains "recon" guys and treats them with any greater reverence. Ranger Regiment is a tier 2 SOF unit AND a functional part of JSOC. Marine Corps Special Operations (i.e. the best of the best in the USMC) aren't either of those. "Recon" isn't a thing in the army like it is in the Marines. Regular infantry soldiers are just placed or selected for Reconnaissance/LRS/RSTA duties, but there are recon sections in every single infantry battalion. In other words, recon soldiers in the army are not elite at all...unless they're in the 75th Ranger Regiment, SFG, or something even more spooky. What I'm trying to say is that your friend's dad sounds...fishy.

Pls help. I am a walking firearm encyclopedia but I know next to nothing about gear

Boots: look into Solomon's Quest range, also Asolo and Merrell, unless you wanna get really fancy and go for Lowa (Zephyr is all the rage rn desu)

Cammies: If you want built in knee pads your best bet is Crye Precision, depending on your weather situation get the standard or all-weather G3 set.

Vest: Do you want armor or not? Would you be satisfied with tried and proven concepts such as chinese chest rigs or do you want something tacticool?

Bump helmet: Team Wendy is getting a lot of attention lately but I'd go with Ops-Core.

Hope this helps.

What's the point of a free float rail if your optic is half mounted on the rail? Doesn't that defeat the point by removing any additional accuracy you would have gained?

>>31489384
It's not a bad move. Optics are important, and the difference between spendy and cheap ones is noticable. You can get away with poorfag chestrigs and still be doing good though.

>>31486025
I remember after I first got out of the military and I wouldn't tell people about it, I'd listen to other former military guys on campus constantly do this. It's amazing how many "basically Special Forces" guys are out there.
>>
>>31489779
I'm pretty sure the accuracy gained is from the foregrip/rails not touching the barrel, i.e. not bending it ever so slightly while holding
>>
>>31489797
I know it helps with muh barrel harmonics.

I thought the point was that the handguards would shift independently of the barrel as well. So it the handguard was rested on the bench or gripped extremely tightly with a slinghold something, any slight bend wouldn't transfer to the barrel. I've never seen freefloats with the optics mounted anywhere by the receiver.

Legit curious, since my knowledge of freefloating is limited.

Funny things with back pouches. It actually turns out that the back platebag rides comfortably sufficiently in a higher position, meaning I can reach all pouches easily with either hand.

I was actually thinking of putting them there to help out my friends innawoods, but when I put them there I put the PC on and was like, "wow, these are actually super comfortable"

Which means I have 6 more mags at my disposal in a light PC configuration

Another cool thing is that if I want to take a bug-out bag for ~72h, I can just remove the back platebag from the harness, allowing me to comfortably carry a 10-15l pack.

(Pic related, but I have a different pack)

Plates are generally supposed to cover your heart and lungs, since a hit to these will kill you in minutes without medical attention. Gut shots, on the other hand, are survivable for hours; long enough to get you airlifted to a hospital.
Also, your belly is the most flexible part of your torso. Make the plates too tall, and you lose maneuverability.

Question for you, or anyone in general. How add rails to just a standard AR handguard? Just any rail section and bolt it on?

>>31491810
What handgun? SP2022? If so, what holster? Been looking around, some opinions would be nice.
>>
My Spiritus Systems NV-119 just came in. Initial thoughts:

Should conceal better than most of its competitors, since the cummerbund attachment points are offset to the side of the platebag instead of the front.

Adjustment range on the cummerbund is great, shoulder straps not so much. Right now it hangs slightly too low for me. Could extend the adjustment range with some adhesive backed velcro in the platebag, or just do more shrugs.

No internal plate hanger or anything so you pretty much have to use plates identical in size to the ones they designed it for.
>>
>>31492926
Nah. That'll weaken the fabric. Use the regular rit dye. Not the poly cotton one. Boiling is good. I've used salt not viniger. If you want go super cheapo go to joann fabrics or Michael's and use the 40% off coupons they always have online. It'll be like $3. Of course Walmart may sell it that cheap. Idk.
>>
>>31493057
Check out Amazon. There's a few options for pic rails that attach to the vent holes on standard two piece handguards.

Also looks like a P226, not an SP by any means.

Looks like any one of the custom holsters that companies make. You may want to look into KT-Mechanical, they do nice kydex work.

>That does makes since but there are pics of mil rifles with optics co mounted on the receiver and float rail.

I've actually never encountered somebody with a rifle setup like that. Even so, just because a cherrypicked picture of something exists, don't take it as the gospel. Military people fuck up gear or might be making a context specific compromise that isn't visible from a single still photo.

In general, people with freefloated handguards were heavily discouraged from mounting optics on the handguard.

>But also you do mount your bius on your free float, sooooo...

BUIS is backup. It's right in the name. If you don't have a fixed front sight, there's really no other way to mount your irons. Again- backup. If you need them, you probably aren't worried about a few MOA shift.

>>31493585
Alright, here goes. I originally bought this hoping that the mag pouches would hold 30 rnd stanags since I've read many a time that 20 rnd ak mags fit 30 rnd ar mag pouches. Since type 63 mags are 20rnd ak mags with a different locking system, I'd be gtg, right? Wrong. That said, it's and excellent choice for ar 20 rounders. 2x fit in each pouch and are easily grabable without magpulls, yet sit deeply enough that one mag won't fall out after the first one has been extracted. This is important since the pouches close with the "Spanish fly" method which opens quickly and smoothly, but closing isn't something one wants to do in a firefight.

The pouches have the usual reinforcing at the base and plastic hardware. Fastening the rig is accomplished via a simple plastic buckle which holds surprisingly well. Suspender adjustment is identical to type 56 sks stripper clip bandoliers with pleather/leather keepers securing the slack. There are magazine pouches at the 7-8, 9-11, and 1-2 o'clock, positions when the belt is fully cinched down on a skelly like me. At the 6 o'clock is an open section with two cinch straps for further waist adjustment beyond the belt, seen here all the way cinched.

The 3-5 o'clock position is occupied by a panel designed to hold either stick grenades or smg magazines. Either could be secured by a flapped upper loop with identical hardware to the mag pouches, and a "bucket" of fabric at the base. Glock brand Glock extendos might fit, but I have no means to test this. From the bottom to the top of a closed flap is roughly 8.5in, and the bottom "bucket" is about 5.5in in internal circumference.
>>
>>31494100
Modding Potential:
The usual adding of fastex buckles and padding to the straps would nicely enhance this piece of gear, though not uncomfortable without it. Holding 8x 20rnd ar mags, loads won't warrant adding of padding to the inside, though it could be done. Replacing the fastening belt's buckle with a fastex buckle isn't as necessary as on average tie-fastening chicom rigs, but this, too, is an option. The biggest modding potential comes from, luckily, the generally most useless area: the grenade panel. Removing the panel's current grenade holding bits leaves an 8.5x8.5 area to add whatever pouches or molle webbing you desire.
>>
>>31494100
Who should look into this rig?
Anons who use 20rnd ar mags know the pain of having little pouch support besides nam era USGI pouches which are generally beat to shit. This piece of gear, while also 'nam era, is in like new condition and is lighter and less noisy than an ALICE belt full of USGI pouches.

I neglected to mention earlier that the mag pouches can easily fit 3in shotshells. I can't give a ballpark estimate as to how many could fit per pouch, but AT LEAST a dozen making this a potential choice for scattergat-wielding anons.

Of course someone using 20rnd ak mags would get good use from this too, as that was its intended purpose after all.

Finally, this piece of gear is skelly friendly

Different anon but...
Literally every SU-231 + 3x magnifier combo goes accross the rail and the upper receiver. Look up the pictures if yu want. The whole point of an FF rail system is that it's free floating, won't fuck with any poi or harmonics, and zeroing is a thing that is possible with sights. You can compensate for any 'droop' at all by re-sighting in the sights, but a quality ff attatchung system (i.e. DD bolt up or similar) will keep the rail perfectly in place.

>>
>>31495017
Get a civilian fannypack from REI or get the FirstSpear one that's grey with burnt orange accents. It's a low profile solution for carrying essentials you might need. A small first aid kid, a survival kit, a folding knife and/or multitool, some high energy foods like Clif bars, and some little creature comforts like a folded rain poncho or crossword book can go in easily. Just pack them in separate ziplocs and you're good to go in case you need to go low profile and carry just the most basic of essentials.
>>
>>31494525
If you really torque on the rail it's possible. This is more likely with something like 2 scope rings as opposed to a single throw lever mount. Also the DD bolt up is a lot stiffer than many of the tube rails people are in love with lately.

>>
>>31496223
Sort of. If you clip the top and the sides of the placard (if it has side clips), it'll be pretty stable. It'll be even more stable if you have velcro, though. If you have MOLLE on the front of your carrier instead of velcro, go to Tactical Tailor's site and order that patch panel things. It's like velcro that you attach via MOLLE. It's designed so you can put agency patches like POLICE or MEDIC on the back of first responder plate carriers, but it'll work just as well as loop velcro for swiftclip. It's not elegant, but it works.
