>>
>>31472065
Stupid fucking disposal requirements. We should have been allowed to give one to HARS, at least for static displays, and maybe airshows.
>>
>>31472065
Why do they bury them? Why not just recyle the metal?
>>
>>31472608
The terms of the agreement that they were purchased under - back when they were a nuclear penetration bomber bought by the RAAF as a long range conventional strike aircraft - set out the requirements for disposing of them at the end.
>>
>>31472054
Insane cost overruns, absolute crap performance at introduction (nicknamed Switchblade Edsel as both a jab at McNamara for his role in the failure of the Ford Edsel and at the plane for being designed by systems analysts), and met no real needs for either the Air Force or the Navy.

By Desert Storm it had become a great EWO and tank plinker platform, but at that point so old, worn, and superceded by other platforms that it only had a few more years in service.
>>
>>31472617
Thats compleatly stupid. It's not like they are radioactive or something.
>>
>>31472663
It was related to capability, not radioactivity.

Too heavy to be an effective fighter jet except by tricking an opponent into crashing into the side of a mountain. Best used as an EW platform under the name "Raven."
>>
>>31472663
Pretty sure it's so Russian satellites can confirm their destruction. They do the same thing with Tu-160 blackjacks.
>>
>>31472681
I still do not understand? Why bury them due to their capability?
>>
>>31472708

I think because they were considered long-range bombers under treaty or something.
>>
>>31472708
It's a platform capable of penetrating another country and delivering nuclear weapons. Even though the RAAF never utilised them for that, they're still on paper, a nuclear platform. Those have strict controls around them, including disposal, and as the poster above said, verifiability of disposal.
>>
>>31472730
Yet still, why would you need to bury a bomber, and not say... a fighter?
>>
>>31472734
Aha, that makes a bit of sense I guess. But its still retarded. Destroying them would be a better method if you would make sure they are not used to deliver nuclear weapons.

Anyone who says anything in this thread about "nuclear bomber" s completely full of shit BTW. This was about ITAR.
>>
>>31472799
>>
>>31472800

The F-111 was designated as fighter because they were classified as being part of the century series..

The F-117 was designated as a century fighter decades later as a codename basically.
>>
>>31472799
At least somebody's enjoying themselves in a rape scene...

Nobody enjoys doing this.
>>
>>31472938
Apparently the pilots selected for the F-117 program didn't know they were getting an ugly stealth bomb dropper until they finally saw the thing in the hangar and realized "hang on, this isn't a fighter. this turd probably can't even fly"
>>
>>31473125

This is true, I really cant come up with anyone who would think that this is a good idea
>>

>Oh and by the way you'll be getting the most stupidly dangerous missions from now on.
>>
>>31472054
I give it a 9.7/10. It's a mid tier plane
>>
>>31472734
Isn't burying them a shit-tier way of disposing of them?

I mean, what's to stop Soros from digging one up and setting us up the bomb?
>>
>>31472663
>>31472681
>>31473323

"Because of the widespread presence of asbestos in bonded panels, it was deemed that conventional scrapping for metals recovery was not appropriate. Accordingly, it was decided that burial in landfill was the safest method of disposal"

tl;dr It was cheaper to just bury the cunts.
>>

The US had other strike platforms around the same time that were better overall, namely the Corsair II and the Intruder. Both were much slower than the Aardvark, but made up for it by not being stupidly expensive.

All of you above, just shut the fuck up. A question being posed does not demand a halfass guessed-at answer. A question was asked, one dumbass replied with asspull, and all the rest of you piled in because it sounded good. > Insane cost overruns, absolute crap performance at introduction (nicknamed Switchblade Edsel as both a jab at McNamara for his role in the failure of the Ford Edsel and at the plane for being designed by systems analysts), and met no real needs for either the Air Force or the Navy.

It flew terrifyingly low and fast as fuck, which in the 70s and 80s was the only way to penetrate in Europe. It also pioneered the combined use of high-res terrain mapping and FLIR\LGB employment (the A-6E did it slightly later).

Even with the unreliable early versions in Vietnam, it flew and hit targets nobody else dared touch. In Central Front it was the only NATO strike asset that the Sovs truly feared.

Do this as a test: Swap the Varks of Lakenheath & Upper Heyford for any other NATO strike AC (incl. Tornado). Then see how this single swap utterly smothers your ability to do deep strike (both nuke and conv) in GDR and Poland in a WW3 setup. (CMANO is in fact very handy for such an exercise)

> By Desert Storm it had become a great EWO and tank plinker platform, but at that point so old, worn, and superceded by other platforms that it only had a few more years in service.

The tank-plinking thing came way late in the war, after the serious work of runway- (with Durandals), bridge- and HAS-busting (GBU-10/15/24) was over and done.

>Terrible as a fighter

Perfect as a loitering LRAAM truck (better range/payload/speed than F-14A), ***which was what the US Navy officially stated they wanted***. It's not GD's fault that they were secretly clamoring for an aero-supremo, which the F-14 was supposed to be and it failed so pathetically miserably (until the -D re-engine).

>Mediocre as a bomber

LOL no. WW3 Europe. The plane for the job. No ifs and buts.

> The US had other strike platforms around the same time that were better overall, namely the Corsair II and the Intruder. Both were much slower than the Aardvark, but made up for it by not being stupidly expensive.

Corsair II - not nearly enough gas, not low enough, not fast enough, not protected enough. Single-seater so the pilot must dodge telephone poles and power lines and pick out targets from a green gooey mass at the radar CRT at the same time. One engine so if the compressor stalls over GDR/Poland you're SOL. No PGMs until early 80s IIRC. Good, but not enough.

Intruder - better contender, but not enough legs on the deck (blame the turbojets), TRAM came a bit late and I don't remember if the EW kit was up to par. No standoff PGMs unless you count the Skipper II and Walleye (I don't). It didn't help that it was chained to its carriers (aka floating coffins in WW3). Close but no cigar.

If you really want "an F-111 without the warts", and don't mind a non-US design, take a long hard look at the BAe (ex-Blackburn) Buccaneer. (Also, extended-range versions of both the Tornado and Su-24 that didn't leave the drawing board).
