Pike and shot formation. Younger guys get a bit of training on pike I can't really guess how anyone would train someone on a long sharp stick. Guys that been around for a while are more toward the old standard with better equipment, if something gets too close they reload behind the pointy stuff.

I assume pikes in the middle flanked on both ends with firearms to a certain depth of file. Auto loaders I would assume at least 3 files deep. I think most of it is establishing a pike line until more people show up. Really one pike rank is going to be more than enough to handle a crowd if they really want them to stay away.

IIRC, they're trained with pike and sword, in addition to guns, because the papal guard aren't allowed to carry guns.

The guys in the ceremonial garb don't openly carry weapons, but the Guard is quite well-armed.

Hate to burst everyone's bubble, but when I was at the vatican, seemed like for every ceremonial fop with a pike, there were 2 guys posted up in corners wearing black wooly-pullies and berets, carrying only MP5s. They just had patches in Swiss Guard colors.

I think the REAL guards probably don't ever carry melee weapons, or wear frills and poofy clothes.

Last I read, which was some time ago, they were integrating the MP7 into their armament, because of its small size and portability. The getup helps too, being traditionally poofy and whatnot.

In my experience being near sighted a moltov would probably fall short where some of my rocks landed and stopped fights.

The tricolor renaissance-style uniform is the dress uniform that's worn when on guard duty or during important occasions (such as the swearing of new recruits on May 6th), and the daily uniform is the pic related, much simpler and functional. Can totally picture a holster being worn with that.

Considering the size of Vatican, I'm certain that there's a QRF contingent of Swiss Guard that's ready to answer all urgent needs of more modern violence, while the guys pulling guard duty are there more for the looks and making sure people don't go where they ain't supposed to go. Wouldn't make the mistake to not call them professional soldiers though, the Pontifical Swiss Guard are rather hardcore.

I don't know any difference between Swiss and Italian pole arm tactics, I would only expect a convergence on firearm tactics. I assume the Swiss are better with pole arms but since it's been a few hundred years I think anyone competent with a pole arm and free to do whatever they want is going to fuck up a threat very quickly they can cover a lot of ground and have a lot of reach.

I doubt they do a lot of formation drill. Any pike drill they do learn is so as to be not useless with the giant ax/spear they are holding if they need to use it.

One imagines that they are carrying a Sig rather deep, or morel likely have access to the weapons off body but close to hand when in ceremonial guard with plainclothes backup nearby.

Continued... a couple years back the Pope fired the commander of the guard. Evidently he & Pope Francis didn't get along.
