it has no serial # not sure if it was filed off or what
anyone know about this type of gun
should i just toss it, burn it, turn it in to local police station?????

Firearms manufactured before the gun control act were not required to have a serial. Do not alter or surrender it.

OP, What you have in your picture is a pre-GCA model 1911, which, at the time, did not require serial numbers to be printed on the frame. It is perfectly legal to own and does not require registration or alteration of any kind. It is a precious artifact, and you would be doing a great disservice to yourself and to humanity if you were to ever toss it, burn it, or give it to the police.

In 100% mint that would be a $12,000 gun.

As is it is anywhere from $1500-6000.

DO NOT refinish it. ( if you do it will be a $600 gun)
DO NOT try and pollish it up or remove tje patina (or it will be a $ 400 gun)

>>
>>31464503
No.

Fieldstrip it, soak it in an appropriate CLP (I like Ballistol), let it sit for a while, then wipe off the excess with a clean rag, making sure to leave a thin film (this acts like a lube and protective coating).
Then reassemble the gun.

Use a guide actually, as improper dissasembly of a 1911 can leave an unsightly scratch on the frame.
>>
>>31465173
Oh yeah, get a nice leather case to keep the gun in.

Old 1911s generally want to shoot 230gr ball ammo, don't bother with hollowpoints.
>>
>>31464432
Thats an old m1911. It was and still is actually a pretty popular handgun. I believe its predecessors were actually the first magazine fed semi automatic handgun but your \s is not that old. I think yours is between 50s and 60s. As far as value I'm not sure. If you were to look at a modern 1911 you can still see a lot of similarities between the two. THe big guard thing on the back as well as the grip
>>
>>31465207
its 1918
>>
>>31465207
>still is actually a pretty popular handgun
True, you can buy new ones from the Fillipines for like $350, pretty alright ones too.

>I believe its predecessors were actually the first magazine fed semi automatic handgun
The first automatic pistol taking detachable magazines would be the Borchardt C93 pistol (from 1893), a big and clumsy design, but it would eventually be used as the basis for the much nicer Luger pistol.

I'm pretty certain John Moses Browning did pioneer the concept of slides on pistols though, as well as short-recoil operation (how near all service pistols today work).

>>31465207
>I think yours is between 50s and 60s
It's actually a pre-A1 pistol, so it's probably from at least 1923 (in 1924 the pistol was redesigned slightly to the 1911A1, which is the most common type), OP's pistol could be as old as 100 years.

Definitely made for WWI. May have saw duty in WWII also. Between the wars, they modified the 1911 and it received a new designation - 1911A1. Mostly cosmetic to address complaints by the GIs. Shorter trigger, arched mainspring housing, longer grip safety, heat treating to address slide cracks etc. So a 1911A1 would have been WWII on and a 1911 is probably WWI maybe WWII. Yours is a 1911 with all the right features as far as I can tell.
>>
>>31464432
Probably had the serial number filed off because it has "PROPERTY OF US GOVERNMENT" engraved on the frame or slide, which spooked the previous owner enough to compel him to file it off; really common with US milsurp.

Don't worry about it though, like this anon said >>31464472 pre '68 guns aren't required to have a serial number, so if anybody asks (incredibly unlikely) you can just say that your great grandfather bought it like that sometime before 1968.
>>
>>31465250
>I'm pretty certain John Moses Browning did pioneer the concept of slides on pistols though, as well as short-recoil operation (how near all service pistols today work).

You're absolutely correct, the first production pistol with a slide was a Browning design

FN M1900 I think
>>
>>31464503
leave it in a tub of acetone overnight, that'll clear off all the corrosion and shine it a bit
>>
>>31465190
storing a gun in a leather case will contain humidity and lead to corrosion
>>
>>31466942
It does? I didn't know that.
If I wanted a nice soft case to store a pistol in, what would you recommend?

Actually, what if I put one of those desiccant packets in the leather case? That should protect against humidity, right?
>>
>>31464432
get a waffenamt stamp on ebay and increase the gun's value by atleast x10
>>
>people saying it doesn't require a serial number because of its age

No, but that gun originally did have a serial number from Colt. When anon's grandpappy removed said serial number, he committed a felony.
>>
>>31465173
What this guy said. Do not get an idiot scratch on it.
>>
>>31464926
>As is it is anywhere from $1500-6000.
Almost certainly at the low end of that range, maybe quite a bit less. It may be an "original" gun and not a refinish, but a) the value is determined by how much of the original finish remains and I'm looking at a "0-1% remaining" gun, and also b), the serial number and US Property marks have been destroyed and if that doesn't affect the gun's ability to be transferred, it definitely does affect value. I would put the value in the $800-1400 range.

>>31467234
>Do not get an idiot scratch on it.
Honestly, an idiot scratch is not that big of deal for a gun that looks like that.

>>31464503
>should i at least try to shine it up or no?
Subtract another $500-1000 from the value if you try to "shine it up" at all.
>>
>>31467205
Well, there's some truth to it, in that any gun made before 1968 doesn't have to have a serial number (though many manufacturers did have them for convenience's sake).

Though it's illegal to deface a serial number today, is the gun still legal if the serial number was defaced before 1968?
>>
>>31467439
Think about it. It's 1:00 PM on a weekday. Why would a lawyer be wasting his time on /k/ giving out legal advice for free? You're not going to find a definitive answer here.
>>
Very Early 1911s did not have a SN
Possible alternate locations
1) Is there a serial number near the locking lug area on inside area of frame?

Please disassemble carefully during your cleaning and check inside
2) WWII "sterile" pistol made without SN for clandestine operations. Unfortunately probably not OPs since his is Model 1911(null) *this story is not confirmed*

3) Serial numbers were stamped in Colts italic numbers on top of the slides, under the mainspring housing, and (usually) on top of the barrel. Get us a pic of the top of the slide?

4) Lunchbox gun made by a worker walking out a piece at a time from factory.

As long as you cannot see evidence of serial number removal and it plausibly was built before 1968 it's legal to own.

I should of said SOME very early 1911s did not have SN sorry about that.
Anything that passed thru the services should have SN though.

There are references to presentation guns without serials as well. Remember PreNFA 1935 and the 1968 it was a lot more mellow.
It's a interesting piece of history. Seriously you could probably just ask Colt about it. I'm sure their archivist could read chapter and verse about OPs treasure.

There was an anon who had a P08 Luger. There was a dab of green paint under the barrel. That was an indicator that this pistol was a genuine war trophy and was paper worked and shipped home all proper and legal like. Some /k/idder told him that green paint would drag down the value. He suggested removing it. Anon asked for best way and was told "sandpaper" the retard sanded it off and posted pictures to prove it. Too painful to post again.
