Bore sneks are okay for field or quick cleaning but dont do shit for copper fouling.

Add a 1 piece cleaning rod, a patch jag, and [pick a copper solvent, they all work] and just leave that shit at home for detail cleaning.

A good cleaning rod is also useful for dislodging stuck cases and squibs and everyone should have one anyway.

I like Possum Hollow rods and Butch's Bore Shine. The Possum Hollow rods are inexpensive compared to other ones and Butch's is super aggressive so it doesn't take very long (but will frost your bore if you leave it sit too long).

I have a beater rifle that I've literally never cleaned the bore on. It throws shards and ribbons of copper fouling every shot and I'm sure it's not gonna last anywhere near as long as my nice barrels despite being a milspec chrome-lined barrel, but it's nice to just wipe down the BCG with a dirty rag and hose out the star chamber with aerosol Rem Oil when I'm done.

No, I skipped the black shim and paid attention only to the clocking instructions because the instructions said the black shim was a different thickness than it actually was. In my kit, the black shim was 0.010" (2 notches and I measured with calipers), but the instructions say that the black shim is only 0.002". Pic related. Confusing.

So for me, no shims had me at E (3:00).
I therefore added 0.016 and 0.002 which brought me to A (11:00, actually about 11:20).
If I also added the "black shim" according to the instructions, it wouldn't have put me at 11:00.

HOWEVER, re-reading the instructions it says to start with the black shim first, and then do clock measurements to add more shims from there. It seems like maybe there should be a "+" preceding the words "Black Shim" for each of the thickness readings. So I think I'll go pull it off and see what happens when I do start with the black shim. bbl

197-6 means ten shots, 3 in the 9 ring, 1 in the 10 ring, and 6 bullseyes, at 200 yards (offhand). Bullseye is 1 1/8th inch diameter, 10 ring is 2 1/4, etc.

So that was a 10 shot sub-2 MOA string, off hand. If that match had been accredited, that string would have been a ticket to Camp Perry.

Ok I'm back.

I reinstalled the handguard beginning with the black shim. Of course this gave me a different number of shims to install in order to reach 11:00, but other than that there was no difference in procedure or force involved from how I had done it before.

The amount of force needed to reach 12:00 is still astonishing. 2 feet of breaker bar was BARELY enough. I should probably have left it alone as it was, since it worked fine. But now I have the negro shim in there so we'll see what happens.

Need to be careful with it, I've had the rear trigger pin pop out of alignment from normal firing. Easy fix bit annoying. And the lack of a dust cover or forward assist on the stock model hurts.

I used shop paper towels under the wrench and also under the upper receiver block and it's a good thing I did because installing this handguard with so much force, twice, deformed the block.
