How can the skeleton move?

What power could it even muster with a swing?

What is a skeleton's physical training regimen?

This confuses me. Why would you employ a skeleton as a force augment or in a security role?
>>
>>31455650
It seems most likely skellingtons would be deployed as a forward vanguard to wear out the enemy before getting to the main force
>>

>>
>>31455775
No, that'd be zombies. Skeletons are the next rank.
>>
>>31455650
>How can the skeleton move?
It's motivated by necromantic energies

>What power could it even muster with a swing?
Presumably it would depend on the amount of magical energy infused into the skeleton, and the care taken with binding the magic to the bones. I would assume that, for an average grunt type skeleton, it would be roughly equivalent in physical capability to an average adult human male.

>What is a skeleton's physical training regimen?
Since it's motivated by magic power, I assume it would be mostly combat practice. However, the skeletons are probably kept dormant in non-combat situations (aside from a small number of guard / sentry skeletons) to conserve magical energy and avoid wear and tear.

>This confuses me. Why would you employ a skeleton as a force augment or in a security role?
It is a weapon of terror (especially if you can summon new skeletons from the bodies of living humans and have them violently escape the host body), they have a very small area that can actually be damaged and are immune to bleeding out, they have no muscles so they cannot grow physically exhausted...

The only reason not to deploy skeletons would be their lack of intelligence (I am assuming that unless under direct "puppet" type control by a necromancer, which would require almost all of their concentration, that the skeleton would only be capable of obeying simple orders such as "stay close to this checkpoint and kill any human who comes into range"), but it works well enough with marines so it's not a big deal.

Honestly disagree with this. A mace would be superior. The skeleton has much less area to actually hit, and a warhammer has a small head so it can concentrate all its force into one location. You'd need to get a solid hit on a VERY small moving object. Which is all rounded. Something with a bigger striking surface would be better.

It also gains another damaging quality that being around due to the necro energies probably sickens opponents - and if enough necro is bound to the skeleton it could channel that energy into its weapons or strikes.

> Gains toxic necromantic touch quality, adding damage to strikes or harming those foolish enough to hit them with natural attacks.

> Sickens animals and other natural critters, they will not Bite them, they will run for the hills.

So if necromancer spends more time juicing up his skeletons he may have the equivalent of toxic zombies or even poppers (maybe the skeleton explodes sending bone shrapnel everywhere when it dies).

>>31455775
>>31455840
this

but really zombies is what you leave after you defeat the enemy, you leave these behind to damage morale of anybody else and also because they eat things so they'll destroy the local ecosystem (cattle and grazing animals) and pose an ambient hazard for anybody traveling through such as scouts.

> you cant sleep when so many zombies are around roaming the countryside

Skeletons is what you send in to wear down defenses. They're capable enough to use weapons and even shoot arrows.

You also set them for special purpose action, if you know somebody has Cavalry you send them up against the cavalry using anti-mount weapons to see if you can thin those bastards out. Cavalry is usually the military unit that wins th

You also send Skeletons in situations where you expect guys to get shot. Like operating the battering ram to knock down the door of the Keep.

> Or carry a special "Package" up to the door, such as cauldron after cauldron of blasting powders, and skeletons set on fire to go light the spark.

> Arrows may eventually embed into the skeletons so badly that it inhibits their movement, but Flaming Oil wont do shit to them or it might destroy a few of them at a time. Skeletons have no morale.

skeletons would weigh what, 50 pounds? I imagine it's a lot light fighting a somalian

you could pick them up and throw them at a wall
>>
>>31460415
apparently a 200 man would have a 30 pound skeleton. Unless infused with a great deal of magical energy I don't see a single skeleton being much of a threat after you get over the shock value

You'd need a few heavily armed skeletons to take down one man. Casting the hips in lead would increase the weight of the skeleton while lowering the center of gravity. Filling the head with some kind of sturdy material would make the skeleton less vulnerable to a caved in skull if that was ever a thing that skeletons needed to be concerned about.

I don't think the skeletons need to be concerned about a caved in skull as I presume it would be empty anyways, I imagine there would be a few wandering around with a few backs missing etc, what they do need to be worried about is the loss of / damage to limbs especially legs which ties into what you were saying about the weight, perhaps the skelies could just wear plate armour?

I think fundamentally we just don't know enough about the strenghs and weaknesses of your average animated skeleton. What are the properties of the necromantic energies holding them together? Are they strong enough to make up for their incredibly light weight? Or is it an advantage, despite their lack of strength? Consider the advantages of having soldiers that are 30ish pounds and never need to eat or sleep or rest at all.
>>
>>31461532
>Consider the advantages of having soldiers that are 30ish pounds and never need to eat or sleep or rest at all.
I guess transportation would be easier on the skeletal horse drawn carts
>>
>>31461588
You could move a huge army a very long distance very easily
>>
>>31461532
>and never need to eat or sleep or rest at all.
This is honestly the biggest deal. Now, the only thing which limits army size is the strength of the necromancy that binds them. They do not need to be supplied. They can fight all night and day and wear out their human opponents over days or weeks time.

I don't see why you couldn't turn the process into an assembly line.

>Teach workers separate segments of the revival spell
>They can pump in more energy per skeleton than just one guy
>Skeletons are stronger on average and take less time to make
>Have an experienced necromancer do QC for each batch
>Ship them off in crates with their weapons stored in the ribcage
>Rinse and repeat
>>
>>31460533
With that light weight, skeletons probably wouldn't be able to swing around weapons very effectively.
But what if you used them as archers or riflemen?
They'd be invulnerable at a distance.

Even if there was a spirit it's still is like hundreds of individual bones being arranged in a specific spot to move specifically like a skeleton would it just doesn't make any sense??!?!
>>
>>31460415
skeletons are light and easy to take down but if conjured right they will put themselevs twogether over and over again
in large numbers they become a fight that does not end
>>
>>31466198
It's simple necromancy, dude

You just bind the spirit of whatever originally inhabited the bones back into them. Or, worst case, you might be able to bind another humans soul into it - it probably won't work as well, but it should be good enough. Like aftermarket parts on a car.

Sure, the soul or whatever you manage to catch is probably going to be insane (being torn back from wherever souls go when they pass on and bound into decaying bones will do that to you), but it should still "remember" enough about being a human to have basic motor functions. And the bound spirit being insane is actually beneficial, since the necromancer can impose their control over the bones by inserting their own will using magic where the spirits higher intellect used to be.

That would have the unfortunate side effect of permanently damaging the bound soul (think standing out in the desert, and dropping a stone into a glass of water that's full to the brim - you're not going to be able to put the spilt water back in), but most necromancers aren't overly concerned with ethics.

In what instance have you ever played a vidya game, read a book, saw a film etc that included animated skeletons that were not wearing plate armor? (Unless theyre archers). It is implied that all skeletons will be wearing full plate and carrying rusty swords.

Okay zombies and vampires make sense on some level since vampires started out as ghouls like zombies it's just a corpse or whatever but at least there is some type of flesh holding the skeleton together it's not magically floating bones. No matter how much you remember being human remembering you had a muscle isn't going to keep your bones floating in an upright position or move your hand around into basic motor functions. At that point you might as well just enchant something to move around that makes sense like a golem or something because it's held together and not tons of tiny little bits of bone floating around, like how would hitting a skeleton even hurt it there is nothing holding the bones together most stuff hitting it would glance off and go through a joint or something. it's not like cutting through the joint is going to do anything because the bones arnt held together by anything their just bones like wtf

Absolutely wasteful, one would've done the trick, and 2 would've made absolutely sure nobody would make it.
>>
>>31476473
Looks like someone wasn't paying attention during thaumaturgy 101, haha.

The magic holds the bones together, and provides a way to bind a spirit (which is being dominated by the necromancer) to them. Then the bound spirit would instincitvely manipulate the magical energies the necromancer invested them with, to organise the bones correctly (spatially) into the shape they held during their life, and provide the functionality that muscles, cartilege, meniscus, etc. would take in a living human.

So instead of a knee joint made of bones, meniscus, bursae, ligaments, etc. you'd have some vaguely defined magical field that does the same job.

It's just still not making sense to me. I mean if you got magic holding it together wouldn't you need like a silver weapon or something enchanted to break the magic bonds holding it together?>>31476930
Like why would you bother even trying to break the bone at all at that point it's like the magic doesn't even need bones to really do anything even a ghost would make more sense to me and that's completely incorporeal like this abomination of half corporeal with the major parts being incorporeal.... are you sure it's not just a ghost wearing a skeleton? That might almost make some sense

The thing is, the bindings that hold the trapped soul and magic reserves to the skeleton work on the principle of sympathetic resonance: the idea that if some things are kept together for a long period of time, and have similar physical properties, they will develop a magical bond.

That has various applications, such as harming people (voodoo doll type applications using a blood or hair sample), communications (taking a naturally occuring crystal and breaking it in half, then applying magic to produce a magical voice transciever), and so on...

This brings us to the subject of damaging the skeletons: You can either disperse or drain the magical field that provides the enchantments, banish the soul from the skeleton (after which the magical bindings will collapse), or damage the sympathetic entanglement of the skeleton.

Since it requires a lot more effort to raise a skeleton than to maintain it once it has been created, the simplest way to destroy the skeleton is to run down it's magical reserves through brute force attacks. Every time a skeleton takes a hit that would damage it's bones (battle-necromancers usually have magical protection cover the entire skeleton, since the bones are very brittle from age) or tear a limb from it's joints, it uses up some of the skeletons magic reserve. While it would be possible for the controlling necromancer to invest additional energy into the skeleton, they are usually too busy with other aspects of the battle.
>>
>>31477633
Another possiblity is to attempt to overwhelm the skeleton's bindings by concentrating more damage at a single point on the skeleton than it is magically able to mitigate in a small amount of time - that is, dismember it. This has the bonus of rapidly depleting the skeletons energy reserves, as a removed limb takes a fraction of the energy proportionate to it's mass with it when it is servered. Contrary to common superstition, the magically maintained limbs are not capable of independent movement, since the controlling intelligence. It is, however, possible for a skeleton to re-attach a disconnected limb, so speed in destroying the skeleton before it can regain the limb and it's power is of the essence.

The act of dismembering the skeleton also has some interesting consequences - since it is disruptive to the self-identity of the bound soul, removing enough of the skeleton can effectively banish the soul from it, as it becomes less and less recognisable as a compatible human body.

Thank mr skeltal
>>
>>31477633
>>31477682
That makes some sense I guess.
Well if it's just a magical bond shouldn't holy water work? In theory it should be like throwing 'magic' liquid on the necromagic liquid should be able to get into every nook and cranny.

My guess is holy water only works when you don't need it, because god protects righteous and innocent people anyways.

If the necromancer has a just cause against you I guess holy water won't work because your using it to avoid rightful wrath.
>>
>>31477989
That sounds like fairly sound reasoning except if there is a spirit bound to it he had to take it from a place god wanted it to be and the holy water should send it back since it's not natural for it to be bound to the skelington I think the holy part would effect that more than any sort of righteous wrath since it's wrong to play with that sort of magic messing with souls and stuff.
>>
>>31478055

You're assuming its a human skeleton and not a skeleton the necromancer created.

And what about animal skeletons? A necromancer could just raise ancient dinosaur fossils or literally anything because he's using his own power.

Kinda like sauron put much of his soul in the one ring.
>>
>>31477846
>>31477989
>>31478055
I think the holy water might work, in the sense that it would damage the necromatic energies that bind the soul to the skeleton.

If it's like in >>31467734 and the soul is damaged by the act of binding it to the skeleton then I doubt it would get back to wherever it came from though. If it was corrupted enough the holy water might destroy it entirely.

>tfw the airforce will never operate uparmoured firefighting aircraft (the kind that water-bomb fires) filled with holy water and operated by chaplains to suppress undead outbreaks

>What is the ideal weapon for fighting a skeleton?
Axe, sword, spear or halberd, chainsaw, an Oldsmobile fitted with a fucking windmill or some shit, black powder or just break them over your knee.

Personally I like using a 12 gauge, double barreled Remington, it's top of the line and retails for about $109.95. Comes with a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel and a hair trigger.

Shop smart. Got that?
