I've gotten lazier in my cleaning regiment. Before I tried to get every piece of carbon off of everything I could but now i just kinda scrape the obvious excess even though there might be a thin layer of crap on the bolt and inside the carrier. I do try my best with the barrel and chamber. Is this going to be problem in the future?

I have a brand new AR: how many rounds before it's considered "broken in"?

Also, what are the benefits of it being broken in. I've only been able to fire 40 rounds out of mine so far with two different types of mags, and it worked perfectly the whole time. I know 40 rounds is no where close to an actual test of reliability, but still.

DI AR's don't shit where they eat either--gas is vented through middle of BCG, not into chamber.

Also every single AR that uses a piston destroys buffer tubes due to carrier tilt. The >$2000 ones just do it somewhat slower.

Proper (rifle) break in is a highly debated topic, with even the "experts" varying between 30 and 200 rounds.

Proper (rifle) break in makes cleaning easier as it reduces the amount of copper fouling that builds up in the bore. That's it--it does fuck-all for accuracy and is an entirely optional step.

Cool. Glad to know that. I was for whatever reason expecting that if it were to not work well, it would work itself out with more use. Throws brass like a sumbitch though, but I imagine that's normal, and I don't know how ARs normally eject.

Just normal cycling will help smooth over any burrs or rough machining and it will gradually get smoother as the springs start to wear and things kinda polish themselves, yes, but if it doesn't work 100% correctly now odds are it never will and ya dun goof'd somewhere.

As for ejection, here's a chart on how it should eject.

As far as distance it chucks brass...that's gonna be a couple other factors. And as long as the brass is reliably clearing the gun it doesn't really matter.

Cool man. I've always dug the p30. The only HK I have now is my USP. Mostly got it because it was cheap, and I didn't have a .40 yet. I honestly kinda wish I had bought the HK45 instead of the operator occasionally, but I feel like everyone needs a 1911, so it may as well be this one.

I meant it more as a general comment on lack of gun culture here. There aren't gun stores and when there are gun shows there are a lot of items vendors can't bring in.

Either way will be fine. Most scope mounts will be absolute from my understanding and once you go past 4X you'll lose the front post in the glass.

You should buy my Primary Arms 1-6X, its literally made in the same place that the Strike Eagle is for a little less cost.

Yeah, I apologize.

It was marketed to the vast majority of 1911 owners. Those who don't require a full on wrench because the bushing wasn't hand fit, the typical 1911 owner.

If you're a true contender, use a metal wrench. I've shot Les Baer's for years. ONLY a metal wrench will take them apart.

I'm yelling at him because he's deaf, and he's having fun remembering the good old days.

Tells me about the time he and his "kin folk" would grab .22 rifles and shoot at cars on the highway at night.

Married my great aunt, and didn't tell her there were guns in the house. She moves in, starts talking about how she'll never have guns and kids in the same house, and he said he decided having a son was more important than his bird guns. Kept one revolver hidden from her evidently for years.

Mostly the roll mark.

But seriously, I like the USP a lot. Like most other guns, there are subjective reasons to like it: it looks good, I like the ergonomics are comfortable in my hands, the ambi release is easy to use, it shoots well, etc..

I personally gothink it because I've always liked the USP's look and that 90s special forces/SWAT vibe it gives off. It also is bomb proof, shoots very softly for a 40 thanks to the dual guide rod recoil spring system, and points well.

The downside is that mags can be expensive, it holds less rounds in the magazine than cheaper guns in the same caliber, the triggers are hit or miss (I personally like mine), you need a special rail adapter for most lights and lasers to fit, and light bearing holsters can be hard to find.
The tactical and match versions are bad ass though. I passed on a USP9 tactical, and I wish I hadn't. They have match triggers, night/suppressor sights, and the tactical models come with threaded barrels, usually for around $1k.
>>
>>31450706

Like I said, I'm looking at the .45 models, but thanks for that info. I got to fingerfuck a standard HK9 fullsize. Trigger was meh, but ergos felt good. Weird mag release (used to a 1911) but once I used my trigger finger a couple times it wasn't bad. I'm just afraid that I'll drop a couple grand on a "combat" handgun, then shoot the other one (with maybe a similar setup) and have immediate buyers remorse. And at that price point, buying both isn't an option right now.

With the stories he tells when his wife isn't around, I wouldn't doubt it for a second. I'd sell a redundant organ to meet him 50 years ago. He once told me about racing a guy across a patch of desert in New Mexico and getting shot at by Mexicans while on his motorcycle. Granted this was evidently in the 70s, but he still had a hell of a life. Sucks that he's basically deaf now and relies so much on his bitchy wife.

Everything I said applies to the USP45 also. The only difference is caliber and the gun is slightly bigger. You can find used USP45s on gunbroker for around $500 if you'd rather not drop $1k-Ish, and you can get a threaded barrel later if you decide to get a suppressor. The 45 is actually pretty modern in the sense that it holds 12 rounds, which is only 1 shy of a Glock 21 iirc, and 3 less than the FNX45.

less, actually. i've shot both. heavier weight and recoil reduction system make the HK417 about the same as a SCAR 17.
>>less accurate than SCAR
maybe... i was shooting 8" plates at 100 meters all day with both rifles.
>>eats buffer tubes
completely wrong. proprietary tube, carrier, and upper prevents this.
>>zero aftermarket other than what "accidentally" is compatible with the AR15
you aren't buying an HK417 for aftermarket parts - you mean the MR762A1? uses normal AR parts if you replace the upper or lower as a whole unit. otherwise 1913 stuff bolts on like normal, and the thread pitch is normal for the flash hider.
>>can't have folding stock because it's a slightly-more-proprietary-than-normal AR10

>hey when compared to a bunch of other <10lb rifles this one's only 25% heavier! (1kg=2.2lb)
16" model weighs 9.7lb. Compared to 16" SCAR17 which is 7.3lb. This is huge.
>HK417 with SFMB still kicks about as hard as SCAR17s with factory PWS comp, and the SFMB is quite aggressive. Comparing FH to FH the SCAR kicks less by a fair margin.
>thinking shooting an 8" plate at 100m is a valid test of accuracy on anything other than WW2 milsurp and AK's
At 300m a SCAR17 is capable of 5", 10-shot groups with M80 ball or 3", 10-shot groups with M118LR. The HK417 is 6" and 5" respectively.
>upper has no bolt rails, will still eat a buffer tube eventually (around 4000 rounds instead of <1000 with piston-retrofit kits) regardless of proprietary carrier or tongued buffer tube.
I can post pics of shrek'd buffer tubes if you'd like.
>zero ability to swap handguards
The #1 thing changed on rifles can't be changed on the HK417
>not everyone cares about a folding stock
The #1 complaint against the AR platform in general is no ability to have a folding stock (that fires while folded, so no LAW Tactical), and is the #1 selling point of things like the G3A3 and SCAR17, especially on SBR'd versions. The ability to fit a .308 select-fire rifle in a large briefcase or day pack is huge.
>it suppresses normally, like most other guns
And about as well as the SCAR, granted, but still inferior to any of the DI AR's because they're not venting high-temp, high-pressure gasses straight off the gas ports to the atmosphere.
>HK417's "7.5lb" trigger has routinely proven to pull at around 9lbs, such an egregious bold-faced lie of marketing that the Budeswehr actually sued HK over it.
Factory trigger pull of 5.5lbs on mk17, plus both semi and select-fire 3.5lb aftermarket triggers available through Geissele. No aftermarket trigger exists for the HK417.

I want to build an ar-pistol. Nothing fancy, and do not get too technical with me -- I want it to be as small as possible. No fancy bullshit on it. I just want an upper, lower, simple hand guard and simple fixed butt stock.

Anderson lower, milspec LPK, ebay pistol buffer, cheapest 10.5" upper you can find (should come with either M4-style drop-in handguards or MOE handguards, will be carbine length gas with probably a fixed A2 FSP). Whether you do a KAK brace is up to you, but for $40 they're a good investment.

Build a lower with a stock, e-file for one on the ATF website, write a check for $200, and jump through a couple more hoops that some of the trips can better explain, wait 6-ish months, the slap an upper with a sub-16" barrel on your upper.

There's more to it than that, and Google knows more than me. So I'd do some research if I were you before making that plunge. A big advantage of the pistol is that there's not as much paperwork involved and it can cross states lines without having to get the ATF involved.
>>
>>31449967
Just wait for a PSA sale for a rifle build kit. Just got one for 425 shipped with a 60rd meme mag. Only things missing were rear sights and stripped lower. Oh grab a lower and spare mags before election, not because they'll be banned in 2 weeks but because the hoarders will start to buy them all in mass and the price will be hugely inflated if Clinton gets elected.

For lowers, Anderson is the standard milspec for budget build. Honestly you don't gain much spending more for a lower. Just don't buy a polymer one. Milspec aluminum - any brand is good.

Look up different lining and metals used in bolt carrier groups and barrels to figure out what is good for you.

If that's too much work just buy the base model from ruger or s&w. They're functional and around 650-700. Building usually gets you better components for roughly 100-200$ less though. Plus you learn a lot about the rifle in the process.
