Is it bad to store your gun like this?
>>
>>31433330

Why would you ever?
>>
>>31433330
Just store it with one in the chamber. What does this accomplish that a safety doesn't already do?
>>
>>31433330
why would you?
>>
>>31433354
He thinks the "schlick" sound will scare off intruders maybe?
>>
>>31433330
Is it bad for the gun? No, as long as you consider where you're storing it: if it's somewhere it can collect dust I'd argue it's worse.

Nor is it bad for the recoil spring. Just like any spring (like a mag spring) compression/decompression weakens a spring, not a constant state of being compressed or decompressed.

I would argue there's no point to it though, and that it borders on unsafe. Not to mention if you use pistol hangers you've made the gun incredibly unbalanced. Just a thought since I use those.

>>31433354
>Just store it with one in the chamber
I think that's just a bad idea in general. That's me though, and I believe most would agree on that. No point in storing it with a round in the chamber. I store mine usually with full mags, but never chambered and never with the slide or bolt back.

The only reason to have a weapon chambered is if you intend to use it. As in, if you're on the range, or if you're carrying. Otherwise I think it's unsafe and you are more unarguably putting yourself at a higher risk to ND. Not to mention unless it's going straight to your carry holster you're going to extract the round from the chamber and possibly just chew up the rim unnecessarily.

>tl;dr
No, it's pointless and unsafe.
>>
>>31433401
>Nor is it bad for the recoil spring. Just like any spring (like a mag spring) compression/decompression weakens a spring, not a constant state of being compressed or decompressed.

This meme again.

Look, any idiot can see that keeping a spring compressed will damage it. Cut this shit out already.
>>
>>31433401
You are so much better than these other guys repeating "WELL WHY WOULD YOU??"

Because i fucking feel like it, thats why
>>
Storing your weapons locked open allows dust to get inside of the action and could possibly result in a malfunction.
>>
>>31433330
don't want pocket lint in chamber, nor pinched nutsack
>>
>>31433374

>"schlick"

Or give them a boner
>>
>>31433424
>Look, any idiot can see blah blah blah

That's why the myth of it being compressed was a meme first: cause idiots keep repeating it.
>>
>>31433424
This is known across the world and internet but lets hear your bs argument
>>
>>31433401
>The only reason to have a weapon chambered is if you intend to use it
That's precisely why I store with one in the chamber. I consider it just the same as carrying it, except with a much lower risk factor for an ND. You know, since it's in a drawer.
If I'm going to use my HD pistol I'll most likely be half asleep and would like to be able to just pull the trigger. I also don't want to make a bunch of noise racking the slide.
I don't have kids, there's a zero percent chance of ND.
Before you take us down an autistic rabbit hole, I mean storing my HD gun in my nightstand, everything else is unloaded.
>>
>>31433424
>Look, any idiot can see that keeping a spring compressed will damage it. Cut this shit out already.

springs have a ROM (range of motion) wherein they will not be damaged. a well engineered gun/mag/whatever takes that into account and designs the item such that the spring can't be over-extended or over-compressed. in that case, a spring will fail from cylces of extension and compression, not being in either state permanently. there are machines that test spring life for various applications based on that. if you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk?
>>
>>31433467
I was given a unique holster that allows for the slide to stay locked with no dirt being able to get in it.

I dont want one in the chamber of a non-manual safety striker fired handgun.

I love the sound and feel of drawing, schlicking a round in the chamber and then firing.

It's impossible to mistake the gun for being loaded when it isnt chambered.

Theres many reasons why I am asking this question
>>
>>31433541
>was given a unique holster that allows for the slide to stay locked with no dirt being able to get in it
Cool, then use it
>I dont want one in the chamber of a non-manual safety striker fired handgun.
Your finger is your safety.
>I love the sound and feel of drawing, schlicking a round in the chamber and then firing.
Because choosing form over function is a good idea in a life or death scenerio is a good idea
>It's impossible to mistake the gun for being loaded when it isnt chambered.
You'll become complacent and really risk an ND with that kind of attitude. Every gun is chambered until you check
>Theres many reasons why I am asking this question
All pretty bad except the first one, IMO.
>>
>>31433516
Don't be an idiot, you're talking about a completely different phenomenon here.
This isn't about fatigue stress, it's about constant stress - in repeated movements the failure is caused by microfractures that appear from the inclusions in the metal, in constant force the failure is cause by crystal slippage.
Nothing in common.
>>
>>31433638
>in constant force the failure is cause by crystal slippage. Nothing in common.

I don't know what kind of jameneze mags you have but in a Glawk mag, you can't stress the springs past the yield point to cause that.
>>
>>31433600
You arent me

I never asked for advice on those things you criticized and I already know all that. When you get seal team 6 training and over 300 confirmed kills get back to me kid.
>>
>>31433424
Take a fucking physics class before you infect others with your ignorance.
>>
>>31433706
Yep you are indeed a cretin. Because otherwise you would have known that you don't need to stress a metal over the point of elasticity to cause permanent deformation thru crystal slippage.
>>
>>31433401
I intend to use my guns in my house if I have too. It's the same as carrying in my opinion. If I ever need my guns, I want them ready to go. All my guns are always locked and loaded unless I'm cleaning/maintaining them.
>>
>>31433706
Are any non-junkmags even capable of being damaged by storing them at their max capacity?

I could see jamming in an extra round with a hammer causing damage but a 10 rounder stored with 10 rounds will be fine as long as you dont ram 11 in there
>>
>>31433745
The edge
>>
>>31433758
Hey, imbecile, he's right you know. And if you would have taken some classes in metallurgy in faculty - or whatever is called in your hellhole, you would have learned that.
>>31433790
Yes, any spring, just like any steel part under pressure for extended periods of time (as in years, no weeks) will deform to reduce the internal tension - its crystals will start to slip past eachother.
>>
>>31433820
>Yes, any spring, just like any steel part under pressure for extended periods of time (as in years, no weeks) will deform to reduce the internal tension - its crystals will start to slip past eachother.

US army did exactly that and found that the mags are fine.

>>31433424
T. Anon who lifts his car up on floor jacks every night to let the suspension rest
Probably b8 tho
>>
>>31433820
Will it deform enough to significantly affect the function of a magazine?

Steel has no fatigue limit if kept below about 30ksi. The grain structure of steel doesn't change under about 800 Fahrenheit. You are an imbecile spouting bullshit

>>
what's bad is that gun is as dry as your boyfriend boipussy. lube that shit up. I know it's glock n'all but still, i always store them lubed.
>>
>>31433441
its a stupid question and a stupid thread, op.
>>
>>31434580
Hes right it will damage it. He leaves out that it will be after you're dead. Humidity, dirt etc and everything else will ruin your mag before storing it full will under optimal conditions.

Im not 100% sure because I havent stored a full magpul for 100 years, but all evidence points to negligible damage done to the springs. I've never heard a strong argument that storing em full does significant damage.
>>
Yes this is bad for the gun. You will weaken the spring eventually if you continue this. Not a huge issue, but it could be avoided if you didn't leave the slide locked open with the spring completely depressed.
>>
>>31435095
you didn't read the thread, or any research anywhere.

i can just tell.

So the consensus is that springs get weakened by compressing and decompressing, not staying compressed or extended for long periods of time?

Yes. Anyone who disagrees is a knucklehead-mcspazzatron and needs to fuck off.
>>
>>31436345

"Yes! A firefight, fucking finally!"
>>
>>31433330
yes its dangerous
the only thing holding the slide back is friction between the slide and slide release
any jolt will drop the slide and chamber a round

>>31433424
>Being this mentally challenged.

No it will fucking not you nigger with an IQ sub 80.
>>
>>31437709
And chambering a round is dangerous.
>>
>>31433330
Why the fuck would you store it like that?
Close the damn slide if it's loaded. Or unload it. Makes no sense to keep in in between.
>>
Fuck yeah, slam fire that bitch.
>>
>>31433956
Wait you mean you dont put your car on jack stands when your not driving it? That will fuck up the springs in the suspension. I thought everyone knew this, thats why you have to replace them all the time dummy.

>>
I keep mine loaded, cambered with the safety off, hammer down.
>>
>>31433820
Yep, all them classic cars sitting in museums, with the springs snapping off from crystals aligning or whatever. . .

Seriously, revolvers have the mainspring under some constant tension and I have never heard of a mainspring wearing out. They break only in the most dire of circumstances. There are Colts from the 1800's with the original mainsprings that still fire perfectly fine and have been under tension since they left the factory.

Would be more concerned about the guide rod than the springs, some pistols have polymer guide rods. Seems like they're only meant for a limited number of rounds with the slide slamming back and forth when it cycles I don't think keeping it under tension with the slide locked back is going to help the shelf life on that sort of thing.
>>
>>31433401
>you are more unarguably putting yourself at a higher risk to ND
Sure, If i'm a retard who forgets how my trigger works, or a fucking gremlin sneaks in and disengages the manual safety that I check daily.

Otherwise, no. What i'm doing is making it so that I can start firing at an invader without moving more than a single arm, drastically reducing my response time, especially if I fuck a fatty and she decides to crush my left arm under her.

It takes some time for a bullet to get hot enough to 'cook off'. Just because powder gets warm does not mean it's going to ignite. Source? I've tossed a bullet in a fire once while camping. I was bored.
