Bell unveiled a new group 5 UAV call the V-247 Vigilant.
Production as early as 2023 if anyone orders it.
>Vertical take off and landing, tricycle gear
>Can fold up and fit inside a DDG's hanger, Huey sized footprint

I'm not sure how unmanned escorts would really work.
Future.
>>31428706
tilt rotors are shit, they aren't the future of anything
>>31428480
Slave drone is basically a missile truck waiting for a target to be designated by co-pilot/gunner/crew chief? Could also do countermeasures and other useful things in sync with primary aircraft.
>>31428815
Sikorsky, please.
I wonder what engine they'll go for.
>>31429371
> Straight outta ARMA
Meanwhile at Northrop Grumman.
>>31429371
Apparently they're looking to do a single turbine (who knows which) that powers two electric motors - less weight (probably), greater maintainability, greater efficiency.
>>31429601
Seems pretty premature to announce this plane without an engine.
>>31430295
Not really; think of the JSF, both the X-32 and X-35 didn't exactly have an engine; they did both use a modified F119, but it was unclear whether they would use the F135 or F136 in actual production.
>>31429439
what the fuck is this mutant
>>31430517
A US Navy initiative to have a group 4/5 UAV that doesn't need a runway to take off and land.
>>31430517
The US Navy wants something with the endurance and payload of a Predator or Reaper (I can't remember which) and the ability to land, not just on LHDs, but also on helipads on destroyers, etc.
>>31430545
That's rather ambitious.
>>31430561
Indeed. Cool as well.
Has a platform been selected for the MQ-25 yet?
>>31429439
That looks like some nazi shit.
Tail sitters just crack me up.
>>31430790
The Reich shall rise again.
>>31431293
>helipad reserved for tail sitter drone
>highest deck at the rear of the ship
>aka the poop deck
>DESIGNATED SITTING DECKS
So how many weapons can we pack on to this thing?
So they scrapped the V-280?
>>31431809
This is a drone to go along with it, dipshit. Literally the first reply in the thread shows it escorting a V-280.
>>31431293
>>31429439
these really need a clitoral lay out - canted slightly up wings with little thick legs underneath and near the back that swing out that it can tail land on.
>>31431809
>>31431832
It's literally a V-280 with the cockpit removed and replaced with drone shit, like the drone brrrrrt
>>31428706
That's a lot of unemployed aviators....
>>31432318
The days of Top Gun are over, Cyberdyne and Terminators are the future of warfare.
>>31432318
Who'll go into civil aviation, driving down wages in that industry and thus lowering overheads for commercial airlines that'll be passed directly onto you
if you're a shareholder or CEO
>>31430774
Nope, they've only just barely figured out what they want it to do; there's still a competition to be had.
>>31432169
Not literally, the V-247 is much smaller than the V-280 and uses a much different engine system; V-280 has turbines in the wingtips with tilting gearboxes, V-247 has a turbine in the fuselage with tilting electric motors.
>>31429601
I think it would be difficult to achieve lower weight due to the addition of a generator, but certainly better efficiency and maintainability would result.
>>31432437
That's already the case. I was a CW2 OH-58 pilot. The MQ-1C put us out of business. I had the choice of going to be a UAV warrant or going to the civilian sector and making $35,000/yr along with a thousand other Kiowa guys. I went UAV. It's literally not even worth flying on the outside.
>>31435503
>making $35,000/yr along with a thousand other Kiowa guys.
It can't possibly be that shit can it?
Do you at least get to work from the states or do you still get deployed anyways?
>>31435574
It is certainly that shit. I interviewed with a company to fly Alpha Chucks which is literally what we trained on for flight school. I have 1,500 hours (or close enough) and they wanted 3,000 hours and a commercial license. They said they could wave the hours if I got the commercial. I agreed and they offered me $36,000 and no benefits. I accepted the UAV position 2 days later.
>>31435574
Oh, and we still get deployed. Which is fine because I like deployment better than garrison.
>>31430774
>>31434732 (me)
Actually, quick little update, Boeing and Lockheed have both received a little over $43 million each for 'risk reduction' for the CBARS program. That probably means that they've passed down-select and it'll be one of their designs that wins (for the sake of not having to exit the fighter [and similar jet] market, I hope Boeing wins it)
>>31435503
Damn dude, I knew it was bad when my buddy got a job flying Air Canada regional CRJ shitboxes for $16/hour..
>>31435901
>Damn dude, I knew it was bad when my buddy got a job flying Air Canada regional CRJ shitboxes for $16/hour..
All that pilot glamour is just a myth aint it.
>>31435956
Depends. The guys who fly the big 100+ seaters generally make bank.
>>31431469
>Not having four rotors for flaming flying swastikas
>>31435956
Not for commercial airline pilots - the problem is that there's not a huge civilian chopper pilot job market (besides air ambulances, police and news choppers there's not a huge number of uses for helicopters in civvie life), which means you need a lot more than 2,000+ hours to really make bank or negotiate your pay up.
By contrast Commercial airline pilots make about 4-5 times that with only 1,000 hours, thanks in large part because they are in the air nearly constantly.
Actually thinking about it; Would it be true to say that civilian pilot pay scales proportional to the distance travelled per flight?

When is congress finally going to step in and tell the Marines they can't buy any new aircraft until they have replaced every single AAV with a modern vehicle?
>>31436313
Because Congress stopped them from getting one last time
>>31436313
Marines make do.
>>31436313
Dude, it's got a natural low polycount though, it'll run super smoothly in CODA86, even if there's a bazillion of them on the server!
>>31435956
>16 canuck bucks an hour
jesus, might as well flip burgers
>>31436404
cuz it didn't even work and it was gonna cost 20 million a unit
>>31436313
why not just replace them with the M113 Gavin? Greatest fighting vehicle of all time in front of us just waiting to be used
>>31436951
It's too powerful. The Marines wouldn't be able to handle that much firepower.
>>31436951
It only has a pintle mounted storm bolter
Just like my C&C and GitS.
