I'm looking to pull the trigger, and I was curious what people think.

This thing seems to me like the magical midpoint between a Mosin and an M1 Garand, but I want to know if people here think otherwise.

So:
>Do you own one
>Do you like it
>Should I go for the 20" or 23" barrel?

The major cons are:
5rd single stack mags
10rd aftermarket mags are unreliable
54r ammo is not cheap any more
>>
OP, I don't own one, but I don't think I've ever heard anything but praise for them.
>>
>>31408891
As long as it's as cheap as .223 it's a net win for me. And that sucks about the 10rd mags being garbage. Has anyone else made an aftermarket one?
>>
>>31408921
You must like the expensive brass cased stuff, wolf gold brass is a lot cheaper than the cheapest 54r.
>>
I own one OP, its fucking great. I recommend buying with SVD furniture instead of buying them separately. The mags are weird but whatever.
>>
>>31408967
Are .308 versions sold with SVD furniture? If so, where can I find them, as I keep running into the default .308 version.
>>
>>31408967
I'd agree with buying the gun with the furniture fit to it properly beforehand instead of doing it yourself later.
But I still think the svd furniture is only "vaguely" svd looking and am not convinced it's worth half the money people spend on it.
>>
>>31408967
I actually like the fudd-ness of the stock furniture and was thinking of something along the lines of a battle rifle-esque build.
>>
>>31408988
I am hoping to find a NY legal 308 version but what can one do here
>>
>>31408869
Shit rifle

Shit caliber

Buy a good .308 rifle
>>
>>31409024
I just want it to look more like a PSL or SVD, as the default furniture looks like complete ass. Or at least the handguards. The stock looks blocky, but if it really is as comfortable as people say it is, ergonomically, its butt aesthetics can be ignored.

Vepr stocks are pretty comfy IMO, and I for one do like how they look. But I can easily see people not caring for it.
Pic related is actually one of my favorite looking rifles ever.
>>
>>31409024
In my opinion it's secondly only to an NDM 86 or Tigr. It's certainly better than the PSL.
>>
>>31409105
I disagree with everything you've said, especially about the psl.
But that's like my opinion, man.
>>
>>31409105
>>31409117
Heard the vepr tends to shoot roughly as well as the SVD copies and PSL, but doesn't overheat and gets more shooting life than a PSL.

This true, bunk, or both?
>>
>>31409143
I've never seen this weird overheating accuracy problem with my psl because I'm not mag dumping. I suppose the vepr would handle heat better since even my 223 vepr has a thicker barrel than anything else I own, excluding shotguns.
And the PSL really does it's own thing, the vepr's less similar than you might think. The vepr54r is more like a regular ak in parts size. The PSL's bolt/carrier are MUCH larger/longer than the vepr54r. Maybe that extra weight coming back is part of why the psl can beat itself to death with heavy ball. DESU though, I don't care for heavy ball ammo anyway when I've shot it through the mosin. It just hurts my longer range abilities and doesn't seem to offer any advantages to me. I'll always value flatter shooting, faster 150gr ammo when it comes to shooting or hunting ammo.
I put more weight on ammo choice when it comes to accuracy too, no matter what one of the three you fire. For instance, my psl hits around the 1in mark, give or take slightly, with russian surplus, but shoots like hell with romanian ammo. When I see eurofags posting their svd's accuracy capabilities, it seems that they all shoot about the same.
>>
>>31409227
>DESU
why the hell do they filter "to be honest"
that saying's been around since the beginning of text communications
>>
>>31408869
Are there any threaded veprs?
>>
>>31409251
I thought there were threads under that thread protector on the end.
>>

have you not been on 4chan at all this past year with the constant spamming of the "shake my head" "to be honest" "familia" meme?

Hell, they should start filtering redpill too.

You new senpai? You should know the word filters desu
>>
>>31409307
>>31409310
I remembered about the filter after it screwed with me again.
I feel like they should get rid of it, that stupid saying has been dead for a while now.

20"
>>
ive got my eye out for a 23 or 27 inch 308 or 30-06 vepr. havent heard any bitchin about the .308 mags but fuck the 30-06 with basically no options for mags. 20" aint justifiable for me tho, optimally id like 23"-25".

long story short OP get the .308. 54r is a meme and not worth the money. no cheap surplus and youd wanna shoot nicer ammo out of the vepr.
>>
>>31409336
>meme
allow me to disregard everything in your post automatically
>>
How do you pronounce Vepr? Is it just pepper with a V?
>>
>>31409343
its a meme because its still recommended like it costs $0.0001/rd and will go through 12 elephants then you got other people saying weak piece of shit corrosive communist rimlock turd. all in all its a decent round.

point is i think .308 would be a better investment if you have a big collection or even hunt and especially if you reload. you could have this gun and a nice .308 bolt action, FAL, SCAR, AR10, what are you gonna pair this with? a mosin? on top of that vepr has decent accuracy potential and .308 is a more accurate bullet.

although i have heard the veprs can be picky with 308 ammo and havent heard that about the 54r version. i guess it depends on if op wants just a stronk russian rifle or just a nice larger caliber ak and if he is interested in ammo commonality or reloading.

Alright done, and again thanks for this. It really cleared up a lot of questions I had about both rifles.

Well, really good to know the SVD is the more accurate rifle, though too bad it's practically unobtainium or costs an arm and a leg. But on the flip side, the vepr looks to be a very suitable poor man's DMR
>>
>>31410389
yeah personally 1.4 MOA is good enough for me.
I really like my vepr 20", idr if he mentioned about barrel lengths but apparently 7.62x54R shoots optimaly from the 20" barrel length. It seems it loses accuracy with longer barrels from barrel whip and there is no real increase in velocity beyond 20"
>>
>>31410419
I was considering on getting the .308 version, but also was debating on whether the 20" or 23" would be better. I'd assume the 20" version of the .308 would have similar ballistic data as the 54R version, so that actually really helps

I highly reccomend it. But dont pay too much for it. Flgs seem to think these are $1000+ rifles and they jew you on mags. Get one on gunbroker for $780 like i did.

If you buy an optic make sure it is an ak mount not a svd mount. Anything greater then or equal to 8x will not fit your rifle with an svd mount.
>>
>>31410419
yeesh bud i get at least 1.25 with ppu are you only shooting corrossive surplus?
>>
>>31410447
I haven't looked at the ballistics data on the 308 with different barrel lengths, but the accuracy on the 20" veprs were better than the 23" ones. Some guys did a test with mosins as well and the rifles were more accurate when they cut the barrel to 20"
probably the reasons the new Russian Dragunov rifles have 20" barrels now too.
>>31410487
surplus
>>
>>31410472
also unlike the PSL the barrel and gas tube are chrome lined so you can shoot corrosive no problems
>>
>>31410521
that makes sense then, thats pretty fucking good for surplus props.
>>
>>31410521
can i get source on these tests?
>>
>>31410526
gas tube isn't chrome lined, but that's easy to clean.

the PSLs problem is that it is over-gassed and poorly designed for heavy-ball use. you can't shoot heavy ball ammunition without the rifles falling apart on you.
>>31410547
thnx
>>31410557
I can't find the article on the veprs but here's the one on the mosin tests

Just found a thumbhole hunter for 700. Can't really afford it, but I can technically afford it...
>>
>>31410582
Wow, on average only ~60fps increase from 20" to 23", and depending on ammo it looks like they are about the same velocities.

Thank you for this, I was thinking about buying a 23 myself but I see there's no real point to the added weight and length

Looked at some basic .308 data, and it looks like the longer barrel does add more muzzle velocity. In terms of MOA, the only comparisons I could find were that 18" barrels were more accurate than 26" barrels, though the differences could be seen as being marginally better. I'd assume the extra 3" isn't going to really add that much, but will add a marginal amount of muzzle velocity.

Well, gotta give you thanks for inspiring me to take some look, and for the vid.
>>
>>31409307
They should filter "meme" on this board to "dislikable thing," since that's what everyone here seems to use it for.
>>
>>31410592
>>31410707
gas block is not the same as gas tube

On the topic of VEPRs, thoughts on the 5.45 version? How does it compare to a regular AK, just a thicker receiver and that's it?

Also how hard is it to find square-cut ones? I'd like the option to switch out the furniture for standard AK stuff. I know the guy over at /akg/ says kvar is gonna have a shipment of 5.45 Molot RPKs, but I would rather just have a standard one over an RPK.
>>
>>31410294
Yeah I put loctite blue on it, but it doesnt work.
>>
How closely is it possibly to make a Vepr resemble an SVD?
>>
>>31411125
Not very.
>>
>>31411125
I've seen some convincing ones, although the action is going to be a dead giveaway everytime. The SVD really isn't that amazing of a rifle. For the money, you can get way more accurate DMRs.
>>
>>31411148
>The SVD really isn't that amazing of a rifle. For the money, you can get way more accurate DMRs.
I know, I just like the look.
>>
>>31411181

The biggest problem is that the receiver is too chunky to imitate the SVD, even if you do slap on lookalike furniture (which there are plenty available for Veprs).

Still, you might fool the occasional airsoft kiddie or random friends you bring to the range.
>>
>>31410917
>I'd like the option to switch out the furniture for standard AK stuff.
You can get an adapter for that, they're like $20 iirc.

>I know the guy over at /akg/ says kvar is gonna have a shipment of 5.45 Molot RPKs, but I would rather just have a standard one over an RPK.
VEPRs are all RPKs, there is no 'standard' one. They're just chambered in different calibers. And I have no idea what he's talking about, especially since kvar has had 5.45 VEPRS available for order for months.
>>
>>31410472
Damn, that this is beautiful!

Any recommendations on a good scope mount and scope for my .308 vepr? New to AKs and I feel a bit over my head.
>>
>>31410472
Damn, where did you get the furniture, or did it come like that?
>>
Another anon here.

I am also converting buying a Vepr, but with a 16 in barrel and in x39.. does anyone here have experience with them?
>>
>>31412826
Why not just get an AK?
>>
>>31412542
>VEPRs are all RPKs, there is no 'standard' one.
Sorry, I should have specified. The ones coming in the "secret shipment" the guy is leaking come with RPK furniture (stock, foreguard, bipod, etc.). I just wasn't sure if 5.45 VEPRs were too common, just started looking into it yesterday.
>>
>>31413048
Do they make decent 16 in AKs that aren't miserably expensive?
>>
Get a PTR91 guys. Fuck this caliber, and its fucking hard to accurate it.
>>
>>31409251
All of them numb nuts.
