Move the mag to the bottom, replace stock with an underfolder, add a proper pistol grip. Maybe slap a few "WaA" stampings on it.

You hold it up against your sternum and use a comfy pillow to stop the recoil from causing too much damage. You hold it with 2 hands. It is only automatic.

It doesn't need fixed as long as it's used correctly:
1. Take STEN, kill Germans
2. Eventually kill German with MP40
3. Take MP40, discard STEN

This works for both British troops and much more importantly for partisans/resistance groups, the major beneficiaries of the early unreliable STENs. The ease of disassembly and reverse-engineering also benefited resistance groups for obvious reasons. It is also more or less what it was intended for which is why they tried to copy the flawed MP40 magazine for compatibility. The magazine copying didn't quite work out but there you go. Remember it was significantly cheaper and easier to make than the MP40 also with roughly 4 times as many made (4 million STENs to 1 million MP40s, MP40 costs ~3 times as much to make).

Basically early on ease of manufacture and low cost was more important than reliablity for a country that had just lost all of its allies and weaponry in France. The later STEN variants were sufficiently reliable and still significantly cheaper than most competing designs.
