Im looking to build a retro AR, you guys have any experience, Whats good whats bad? Im thinking a 604 replica is what I want to do, anyone know the best way to do it? pros, cons, things you'd recommend?

I'm currently building one.
Buy a parts kit.
Good luck with finding a Rear site assembly.

Any sites you'd recommend for getting a parts kit from?
>>31391528
NoDak Spud, AR-15Sport.com and Brownells. Or you could get a Colt SP-I or SP-II

WHOOOAAAA NELLY
>>31391553
damn, how can I build/buy something like that?
>>31391575
spend like 1200
>>31391553
Not a good call? i think there pretty slick, and it doesn't seem to unreasonable
>>31391528
AR15 Sport is Clutch. they've been amazing..
I'm waiting for a 1/9 twist pencil barrel. i can't decide if i want to wait for that or just get a 1/12.
>>31391575
You're in for a long, convoluted journey, and even then some parts like the A1-style dust cover can't be found unless you get a $700 parts kit that's minus the barrel and into kinda-sorta good shape.
>>31391553
Why?
is there another reason other than its just a range toy?
>>31391489
Uppers are getting harder to find because everyone and their mother is building retro ARs now. I got my upper locally from Sherluk Industries when they were at Camp Perry. If you really care about historical accuracy, you're gonna want to go to NoDak Spud and get on their fuckhuge waiting list. Or you could just buy an SP1 or a transitional Colt Sporter like MAC and Hickock have and put A1 handguards on it
>>31391553
Eh, I'm building one for my grandpa's 70th birthday right now (he was a Vietnam veteran).
I have everything but an upper, but I'm just buying a flat top. I know what you're thinking, but last time grandpa came for a visit he fell in love with my EOTech. His vision isn't as good as what it used to be.
I plan on just mounting the EOTech and then purchasing one of those cheap carrying handles that attach on rail so he can have the best of both worlds. Not a true "clone" but he'll appreciate it.
But everything else is standard A1 shit. I already had the furniture and magazines and I just went with a regular AR complete lower I found cheap at my LGS.
The old man ain't too picky.

SP1's have went through the roof because of the Connecticut faggots buying them up, and FFL's stripping upper from lower to sell to Connecticut faggots so they can have legal tactical rifles.
>>31391613
At least have the decency of installing the proper grip.
>>31391551
This. Also look into Fulton Armory. They have some retro parts.
>>31391624
So then its just a normal AR with A1 furniture
>>31391624
> I know what you're thinking
It's not hard to deduce, really.
>>31391642
I've been meaning to either file down the nub or get an A1 grip, I had the chance to get one when I got the upper but I didn't because I thought the A2 grip that came with my lower was fine. Also gonna swap out the 3 prong flash hider with a standard A1 one
>>31391609
Ehh, it wasn't too hard for me. I'm waiting for a 1/9 twist barrel cause i have upwards of 1500 62 grains bullets. other than that i got all the parts pretty easily. I haven't started looking for a rear site assembly and i heard its a nightmare but i have a friend who is an extremely talented machinist.
>>31391645
I mean, pretty damn much to be honest with you.
If I still had one of the original stripped uppers I bought a long time ago when APEX had them for $40 or $50 or whatever they were I'd just use that, but I sold them earlier this year before I considered doing this build.
The front sight assembly I have is surplus, however. So is the muzzle brake.

breh just get an NDS-603
>>31391644
How much does a build like this run you? north of a grand?

Well I'll be fucked.
>>31391766
Gotta git gud at scrounging and webdigging if you're gonna do this shit, nigga.

>A1 magazine fencing with forward assist
>three-prong
I like your rifle. a lot.
Personally, I'd either find a lower without magazine fencing to make it look like an XM16E1.
OR
Keep it all the same except replace the three-prong with birdcage.
It's your barbecue. And it tastes good. I'm just an autist for Vietnam-era shit kinda like how fat 40-50 year old neckbeards are for WWII stuff.
>>31391810
I'm planning on swapping out the flash hider with an A1 birdcage and either filing down the A2 nub or just getting an actual A1 grip
Will an A1 style AR be as accurate/reliable as a modern AR?
>>31391810
>A1 magazine fencing with forward assist
Bruh, that's an A2 lower with a C7 upper
>>31391748
I would guess around $1000. I bought a surplus parts kit a few years back to build mine.
>>31392023
Actually it's an A1 length stock. Bought it off of Cheaper than Dirt

>>31391790
More fences than a home depot garden center
I don't understand why you fucks would say "I'm gonna build something for the pure purpose of being historically accurate" and immediately say "fuck it as long as it has lol muh triangle guards its good"
>>31391613
>3 prong
muh nig
>>31392081
Lower, bruh. Lower.
>>31392517
You gotta b8 me harder than that, son.
where do i buy these parts tho
>>31391489
Back in 2011 I snagged one of the A1 builds by century. Fucking love it, Mostly Colt upper parts and the lowers were built by I think DPMS. The only thing I want to swap out is the supplied A2 pistol grip with an old surplus A1 grip.
Other than that no complains from mine...
I also scored two 60's vintage colt 20rd mags with aluminum followers for about $10 bucks each at a local fun store when they had an old inventory blowout sale. found them in a box full of old FAL mags, and 1911 mags.
