Well it was a step backwards in just about every way, put us behind the Soviets, and lasted all of 15 years before getting merc'd by the AR, so "mistake" seems an apt term...

It's a 30's weapon that has been "upgraded". It's features were behind the times when it was new, especially the action. Its cartridge is, while awesome, too big for a select fire rifle. Should have kept the .280. Keeping the wooden rifle style stock is just silly, and reeks of good ol' boyism. I like the M14, it looks cool. I've shot very well with one, and really enjoyed it. But it was a dumb attempt at creating a service weapon to serve the US during the cold war. The Garand was amazing, but it's successor entered during an awkward time, and ended up awkward.

I could write a long series of chains about why I stopped bringing it to competitions in favor of an ar10, but I found an article that does it for me:

Carlos Hathcock got killed because of his M14 malfunctioning on him.

He tripped and fell on it and it pierced his heart.

I see what your doing. But you bring up valid, if very exaggerated, reasons why it sucks.
>>
>>31388163

>>
>>31389764

Having read this article, it seems like a bunch of stacked up m14 hate. The weapon most certainly does not become wildly inaccurate without constant tuning. That's absolute bullshit. What I think you should take from the article is that the m14 isn't a great sniping weapon, but is acceptably accurate as a standard battle rifle.

>>31389763
>>31389788
>Oh man, the way the FCG locks into the action and the very construction of the receiver DOES make bedding the stock properly a chore, and something that must be done often due to the offset forces imparted because of the op-rod

That looserounds blogpost is a bunch of garbage written by a colt fanboy.

The military study he quoted from was an example of issues from very early production rifles before they shut everything down and reworked the tooling.

He even showed that he didn't even know what he was talking about when he gave an example of the upper handguard causing the zero to meander when disturbed (exclusively a problem with match modified garands)

He later deleted the section from his blogpost when people called him out on it.

You might have intended that as a joke, but it is actually a very real issue with the M14. Maybe the civilian models are better quality, but the military models were horrible. The Army tried for years to make the M14 into a suitable DMR. No luck.

Fuck it, I'm gonna bite

The M16 reliability issues were down to just two things.

>Lack of cleaning kits
For some reason, someone thought it would be funny to tell the boys on the ground that their rifle was self cleaning. I don't know why, perhaps they were the first shitposters. This meant cleaning kits weren't issued, so the rifles got all shitty and dirty and after a while they would choke up and die. This wasn't helped by the swampy conditions in 'nam, mud being one of the most infamous ways a gun gets shut down. Once people stopped being retards and figured out that having shittons of mud in every inch of their rifle probably wasn't a good idea, stoppages and failures decreased dramatically.

>Gunpowder
Technically isn't even a problem with the rifle. A lot of the time in the early ammunition, not all of the gunpowder would burn off, and the now exposed casing would shit a good load of the stuff into the action, which again over time shut down the gun due to the build up of gunk. Which again could be easily fixed by cleaning your goddamn rifle.

The reliability issues of the early AR's were not a product of faulty design, but rather the product of misinformation and ignorance from the top brass and the growing pains of a new system being implemented.

3/10 bait made me replay with a paragraph

Had one for 20 years. Never liked the safety
placement. It also has a overly finicky gas system.
Loved the trigger and sights.
FAL would have been a better choice.
Especially in .280.
