Nothing keeps it pressed down, but there's a little plunger that keeps it from bouncing up in recoil. Some custom .45 smiths would put a little divot (the plunger bears on the divot) on the back of the slide release so it can't bounce up, but will still function normally when the follower in the magazine pushes the slide release up.
