Why should I buy an AR15 over a battle rifle? What distinct advantages do they have over, say, a G3 or FAL clone?
>>
Own all three mentioned. The big difference. Egos. Easy as fuck to use an ar
>>
>>31378636
Fucking ergonomics...fuck this phone
>>
Tbh, you'll probably have more accuracy out of a good AR than a FAL, or G3.

Ammo is cheaper, mags usually arent,
and more available after market stuff.

It you have the money for ammo I'd get a 308 raifu, I don't like my AR. Wish I had an fal, I've talked to plenty of people who hunt with them.
>>
>>31378621

Make Jesus happy and buy a Garand.
>>
There isn't, get an FAL
>>
>>31378657
surplus fal mags are a thing of the past
g3 mags are still plentiful (for now) but cost more than they used to

You're joking right?

The AR platform is one of the easiest weapons to understand.

No.

>>31378621
- 5.56 is easier to control than 7.62 for rapid follow-up shots.
- Much larger aftermarket for AR-15's to get exactly the rifle you want.
- Modern ArR15s are just as reliable as a good G3 or FAL.
- Cheaper ammo.
>>
>>31378692
The only correct answer.
>>
Easier to shoot. Carry more ammo, infinite aftermarket, easy to clean, easy to work on.

This is stupid.

You're not gonna bury your rifle in mud.
>>
>>31378621
Why "over"? AR-10 is a battle rifle, and is an AR platform at the same time.

Have you never owned any other semi auto rifle?
>>
>>31379866
>5.56 is easier to control than 7.62 for rapid follow-up shots
If you train for rapid follow-up shots with 7.62, you will get it as easily as with 5.56.
>Cheaper ammo
Unfortunately, yes.

Gotta say, though, that .308 recoil is nothing to sneeze at. Even old fudds who used to kill people for living unanimously suggest the "sissy pad" right away.
>>
>>31380335
Come on, the piston version is manageable.
>>
>>31380356

Oh, fair enough.
>>
>>31380305
No, but if you have to crawl through some mud this could be a problem. Mud completely took the FAL out of action. At least the fucking C308 could be manually cycled and started working again after the mud dried.

ARs are MUCH lighter, have superior ergonomics, are easy to learn, easy to clean, have cheaper ammo, and better aftermarkets. Cheap mags don't fucking matter if your ammo is 2-3x more expensive.

>>31379774
>>31380310
One downside to AR-10s is they get fuckheavy fast. Ammo alone for the one in the lower left is a pound and a half per mag. A regular AR-15 is a lot easier to carry around all day.
>>
>>31380398
Yes, they are heavy. Weight training is the cure. Side effect, recoil and weight of AR-15 feels like a toy afterwards.

"What is it like to fire an AR-15? It’s horrifying, menacing and very very loud.

It felt to me like a bazooka — and sounded like a cannon.

But mostly, I was just terrified.

Squeeze lightly on the trigger and the resulting explosion of firepower is humbling and deafening (even with ear protection).

The recoil bruised my shoulder, which can happen if you don't know what you're doing. The brass shell casings disoriented me as they flew past my face. The smell of sulfur and destruction made me sick. The explosions — loud like a bomb — gave me a temporary form of PTSD. For at least an hour after firing the gun just a few times, I was anxious and irritable."

No. 7.62 has more energy involved, it is more difficult to control. Anyone who is fast with a 7.62 will be faster with a 5.56.

>>
>>31378621

Quite frankly, the advantage is in their aftermarket. It is for this very reason that the AR platform is, bar none, the single most versatile weapons platform on the planet. It might not be the perfect weapon when you buy it, but pretty much every problem that you have with the gun's performance can be modded or otherwise dealt with in some way.

Take >>31379621 for instance. He was right to suggest that the charging handle, while distinctly unintrusive, is awkwardly designed and absolutely horrible to try and use in combat, and therefore does require some additional training. Well okay, then rip out the fucking milspec charging handle and stick one of these in: http://www.gfgear.com/charging-handles/ar-15/gfg-side-charger

Point is, it's very rare to be able to do so many different kinds of conversions on a gun as you can with an AR. Is full auto your thing? Stick a bump-fire stock on it. Want to stick a full bayonet, a flashlight-supporting forward grip, a massive ACOG scope AND a bipod on your gun? Well, maybe you're retarded, but you could even do that.
>>
>>31378621
lightweight ammo
>>
AR-15 is the most versatile and dependable weapons platform on the planet. This weapons platform is nothing short of perfect. The platform is suitable for any possible scenario you could imagine. If its your first rifle or your 10th you are a fool to buy anything other than an AR-15. It is great for hunting anything from mice, to elk, to ducks, to deerts. It can be used for home defense, concealed carry, and fighting tryanny. The 5.56x45mm is balistically unmatched and is the pinnacle of ammunition.

First off, FALs aren't a terribly reliable design. It's really not meant to handle a full power rifle cartridge like 7.62 NATO. Every FAL I've seen/shot from a frankenstein IMBEL Century build to a top-quality DSA are all prone to stoppages from time to time just because of the design, whether it's clean or not.

The G3 is known for reliability but the receivers are prone to dents (the G3 kit even has a dent remover), you have to make sure the bolt headspaces correctly or it will kaboom, it has a horrible trigger in any configuration and isn't terribly ergonomic.

The AR, on the other hand, is a solidly reliable design with cheap ammo, cheap mags (though G3 mags are cheap too), unlimited versatility, and decades of refinement up to modern cutting edge standards.

That said, I'd take an LRB M14 over any AR any day of the week.

TL;DR either get an AR15, or if you must go battle rifle get an M14 or M1 Garand

It was originally supposed to be in .280 British but they scaled it up for .308 when Murrica pushed it to be the standard NATO round in the 50s

>>
>>31387100
Or just get a vepr/galil/valmet in 308. Only reason the Israelis stopped using the Galil is because the US gave them welfare bux to buy the m16a1, the Finns still use the Valmet.

Because they're different guns. Namely an AR15 is an "assault rifle" with its 5.56 intermediate cartridge, whereas the rest are battle rifles.

I got rid of my PTR91 for an AR15. the battle rifles are just too damn heavy unless you are using it for a stationary weapon with a bipod, the AR can have twice the amount of ammo on you, with faster moving bullets, and a lighter gun
