The Norks are pretty behind on basically everything. They have a few pieces of semi-modern tech (couple iglas, RPG-29s, might have a handful of somewhat recent ATGMs) but most of it isn't in widespread service. The one thing to worry about would probably be their artillery arm, but that wouldn't last long in a conventional war. Other than that their main battle tank is essentially an upgraded T-62, their Air Force is woefully undertrained and probably suffers from maintenance issues, and the average nork soldier is probably much weaker and shorter than their Sork counterparts. The only threat I could see coming from North Korea is if they pop a nuke or two before the end.

consider that although NK does experience chronic famine, they are still producing a significant percentage of the necessary food to feed it's population, and that is with seriously skewed priorities and inferior technology

let's start with the guns vs butter
we all know NK spends too much on it's military in comparison to civilian interests
we've seen tractors originally gifted to Nk for agriculture used to pull military hardware during parades and it's hardly a stretch of the imagination to believe that this isn't an uncommon practice and large numbers of vehicles used by the military could be readily adapted to agricultural use, and certainly fuel could be reallocated to run tractors and combines and what have you more
additionally, fertilizers and explosives use many of the same manufacturing processes and input materials, so factories producing explosives could probably be fairly rapidly repurposed to produce fertilizers

next up we have their tech level
NK certainly does not practice modern high input farming techniques on the scale of industrialized countries and due to embargoes likely don't have access to many of these technologies
the introduction of modern high-input farming techniques and technologies could drastically increase crop yields even without working any additional land
I somehow doubt NK is using some of Norman Borlaug's super rice strains

plus, SK wouldn't be going it alone
if reunification happened, countries that currently send NK food aide wouldn't just stop altogether, especially western nations
if anything, western nations would increase food aide in the short term
and, opening up NK to foreign investment would leave great opportunities for Monsanto, John Deer, Dow agro-chemical, etc to jump in on a new emerging market

I don't think that SK's economic problems with reunification would be focused on food

In a word, very.

They have a lot of gear but the numbers of combat assets don't tell the full story. Yes they have a lot of troops, but in order to be effective in combat those troops require food, transportation, ammunition, medical care and so forth.

Their vehicles are quite old, most Nork tanks couldn't kill most anything. Their main battle tank has a 115 mm gun and shit armor, and again logistics kill them, they don't have the resources to keep those tanks running long term.

Further, a lot of their ammo are Soviet stock that is now long past its sell-by date, when they shelled that island a while back with arty and rockets, inspection of the damage showed that roughly half of the rounds fired at them were duds.

They have a lot of stuff, but it's a lot of crap, the days when sheer numbers would let you win a war have passed and at this point they're just shoveling more bodies into the killing fields. I project a second Korean war going similar to the conventional days of the second gulf war. Lots of media fearmongering about one of the biggest armies in the world, and how the elite troops would fight to the last man standing, and then the entire military folding with hilariously one sided kill ratios and mass desertion and surrender.

US troops in South Korea are not there to keep the Norks from conquering the south, they're there to keep the ROK from invading mainland China.

not only is the bulk of their military hardware outdated but they probably don't have the petroleum reserves necessary to sustain and kind of invasion, and obviously they can't just buy more

add to that they have no capability to fight at night and very little capability to fight outside of visual range and it's likely they would get absolutely rekt if they ever tried to use those tunnels in to seoul

but, they could probably mount a fairly effective guerrilla style defense. If the south ever tried to depose them by force it would be very costly.

If its not a missile program or a nuke it has not gotten funding in the last decade. The norks decided to go all-in on nuclear armed ballistic missiles, reasoning (correctly) that a conventional force capable of stopping a US/RoK or even just RoK attack was not affordable. This means most systems are a bit shit, most tanks are T-62 variants, the airforce is mostly MiG-21 and older and the navy is very limited in capability.

On the other hand the missiles are fairly good, plenty of reliable SRBMs and they are making real progress on MRBM/IRBM as well. They also most likely have nuclear warheads that can fit on said missiles, as they are five tests in, have a somewhat sizable stock of Pu and HEU and bought some Paki nuke designs a while ago.
