Just learned about the PAPOP, french prototype from the end of the 90's, designed to replace the FAMAS in the long run.
Instead of these sweet 8kg of fun and grenades, we're buying boring kraut rifles.
Also, prototype thread.

Everything about this looks like it'll get in the way

repeating digits means im funny
The built-in grenade launcher interest me though. Sure it's clunky, fugly and heavy as hell, but I guess it worked surprinsingly okay. I mean it was a prototype for the french military, not just for a science project.

It wasn't a prototype anon. Just a model.
Also, the closest thing that came to a working papop protoype was just a Famas G2 in a new casing with an additionnal grenade launching tube on top.
Makes sense since PAPOP standed for "Poly-Armes, POly-Projectiles". Litterally an attempt at making a french OICW, in the wake of the land warrior program.
The french land warrior program became FELIN (Fantassin à Equipement et Liaisons Intégrées, not gonna translate obviously). The guys on picture are wearing what was originally called ECAD (Equipement du CombAttant Débarqué), the ancestor of FELIN. This was in 1992-1994.
So this PAPOP thing only existed because someone at the french DGA (equivalent of DARPA) asked the then still existing MAS
>"hey guys so huh we saw the G11 these germans made, and also the US OICW, so huh... Huuuuh what would something like this look like if we happened to do that sort of stuff ?"
Then a bunch of guys in the MAS produced plastic inert models and said "it would look something like this, probably".
Suddenly everyone was
>"OHMUHGWERD DIS IS STAR WARS FRANCE IS SO LE FUTURE"
when frankly it wasn't. I mean look at this shit.
tl;dr : it's a meme. An old one, and not even a good one.
The sad part is there were a lot of good projects back then around the french small arms industry, like the Lacroix Defense Samourai, which was marketted in the US as the High Impulse Weapon System.

All of these projects died to please the radical left because
>"M-MUH EBUL SCARY WUPUONS"
They went for the smaller ones because they weren't able to go for the biggest ones.
The second version looked pretty sleek. Shame it was canned in favor of the FAMAS FELIN. Of course it's not the type of weapon everyone would have had though.

Didn't knew about that, looks ballsy
Cartoonish game graphics aside, this is the ideal combination for an integrated combat weapon. The M41A Pulse Rifle had a similar configuration too point of fact.
Rifle is bullpup and is mounted on top. Launcher is short barrel and integrated on bottom, some of the weapon space inbetween is shared by both components. Grenade Launcher magazine is inserted forward of trigger much like a standard mag is.
Rifle mag is inserted bullpup or top-mounted like a P-90.
Using push button on foregrip switches the fire control of the trigger from the Rifle to the Launcher (so it takes two hands to use the launcher, and also two things must be done in order to engage it).
They've been approaching this OICW issue the wrong way from the get-go. In all the configurations ive seen you are giving too much barrel length to the grenade launcher (it doesnt need that much) and the assault rifle is getting pistol-length barrels (as if to think that the rifle wouldnt be getting used that much, give me a break).
