For me personally it's for fun, compact and cheap to shoot "rifles" that take the same ammo as my pistols. I absolutely love SMGs/PDWs though so it's natural. Sure a 16" 5.56 AR will go farther, but it doesn't mean the SMG isn't suited for close range. Course that being said since the US has 2 active conflicts AR's have become so common that all the cool PDWs/SMGs are being phased out for the plentiful ammo/parts the gov has. Me personally if I was breaching and clearing a house I'd take my MP5, if I was a cop with a gun in the trunk I'd do probably do an M4. Also 9mm is fun and I have no regrets.
