Good evening /k/unts.

I'm in my late 20's, and I am a small business owner. The company that I started is doing very well, and I am looking to either sell it off, or at least hire somebody to manage it while I go off and do my own thing.

I'm moving back to Alaska, and I think that in my semi early retirement that I want to start up a private security company.
The company that I would like to start would be focused on protecting off shore fishing assets, for instance crab fishing pots from thieves.
I have experience with 29 foot boats, and I really would just like a reason to go sailing around Alaska wearing a plate carrier and my FAL for a living.

Startup costs from my early analysis are pretty hefty, but I'd like to hear what you guys think.

The basic business model is this:
>Provide quality risk management for fishing assets.
This would be done via actual on site security guards, patrolling the waters surrounding the clients assets. We would also offer deterrent devices, as well as security systems, that could be installed on the assets to help locate and identify thieves.
Fee's would cover the cost of boat fuel, employee wages, insurance costs, boat maintenance fees, any company assets that are used during the patrols, etc.

I'm thinking that we would also offer normal guard services, simply because it be stupid not to take advantage of the security guard licences we have to purchase anyway.

From the searches that I've done, there isn't anything like my idea out there right now.
This is probably because of the fact that there is no demand, and we would be lucky to break even.
I know that crab stealing is an issue in Alaska, or at least it was when I was up there, and it is an issue with non commercial fishing as well.

I don't expect this to work out at all, I'm just playing with ideas for my retirement.

Do you guys have any ideas? Any thoughts or comments?

If you hire me, I'll finally be able to justify buying the FirstSpear Buoyancy cummerbund thing lol
>>
>>31371687
I was just looking at that about 5 minutes ago. Small world.

You live up there?

For sure. Its great place.

Thats also part of the issue. The fishing seasons are pretty short, so we would have to make all of our money for the year in a few months.

I would just think of it as a short deployment. We would have our office/HQ near one of the fishing zones, and would have bunk space there. Live there for a few months, and move on until next year.
>>
>>31371703
No, Im CONUS here in Oregon. Always loved loved colder weather but one thing i love even more is helping good people, especially if im helping them from bad people.

Seeing that you have a successful business I'm sure if you can manage to hire someone to run it, you could operate your alaskan security business even at a loss. Just use the income from your other business to help those in need. That is... I assume you want to sail with a PC and FAL because you actually want to help people and not just sail showing off your gear lol.

Hope you make your dreams come true, and more importantly, when it does happen, I hope you're happy with it and it was actually what you wanted. Good luck!
>>
>>31371687
Sounds like you already have some equipment! lol.

Shoot me a CV in about 2 years and I'll let you know!
>>
How bad is commercial theft in Alaska, anyway?
>>
>>31371848
well gimme an email i can shoot it to and ill really wait on it!
just shoot and email to my throw away account and ill email ya back so we don't have to have our stuff on here

>>
>>31371850
This OP, does anyone actually steal shit like crab pots? Sounds like a lot of risk for a little reward, considering the operating costs of a vessel equipped for this and trying to sell stolen crab or just the equipment.
>>
>>31371845
That is the idea. I do enjoy helping people, and It would be great to be out there in case something went wrong. It takes time for the coast guard to respond, and anyone that goes in the water has about 20 minutes before they're popsicle.

I'd be wearing the gear because you never no who would show up. If you're taking crab pots out there, you have some serious gear. It costs big bucks to get a boat that can handle pulling a 500 pound metal box hundreds of feet.

>>31371850
I'm not to sure. I couldn't find any statistics on it. Its something that I would have to research for sure.

I do know that people talk about it quite often, and that fishermen are very paranoid and protective of their gear.

I also know that in the lower 48, its pretty common to have assholes steal personal pots, which are much smaller.
>>
>>31371883
From what I understand, they're arent too many.
It also seems to be other fishermen who decide to take a pot that's not marked as theirs.

You're correct that it would be a dumbass move to do, but it does happen. And losing a pot as a fisherman is a big deal. Considering that a king is worth anywhere from 30 to 50 dollars, losing a crab pot can set you back thousands.

I think that is the way that I would sell it. Not that poachers make money off of it, but if you lose a pot, you're out a few thousand. And if my services can be provided under that cost, they might use me.

Hey hire me my man. I was stationed in Alaska for 4 years and lived up there for another 2 after I got out. Love it there, got more ass at Chillkoot Charlie's than a toilet seat at a Chicago Bears game

I'm not looking for hires at this stage, as this could go belly up at any moment, but sure.

Send a CV, a photo, and include any fun facts.

>I need a plate carrier, FAL, and a platoon of men to guard the ocean against fisherman mistakenly grabbing the wrong crabpots

>I might not break even
>Might not

>I'm blowing everything I worked for to create an Alaskan PMC that I pay out of my own pocket to wander the sea protecting crabs

Maybe discovery channel will give you a reality show.
>>
>>31372057
I see where you're coming from.

I'm going into it as I leave the workforce. As I said, its part of my semi retirement. I don't even need to work, so money isn't really an issue.
This is just a way to have fun, do good, and possibly earn a little money.

I dont need a platoon, I need MAYBE 4 or 5.

And I haven't blown anything. I'm moving back to Alaska and I want a boat. I'll hopefully use said boat to do /k/ related things. If not, I'll use it for throwing bobbers at salmon. Might even do some halibut with it.

i was former signals, US Army, and after i got out got a degree and worked in IT Systems Engineering here in the Bay Area for the last 6 years and i hate all the bullshit happening here. i've been toying with getting into manufacturing since i have about a dozen armory certifications (including HK, SIG, Colt, S&W, Glock, et c) and have out dated welding certs for SMAW and W3).

i'm aching to leave this place, but the cost of living change is what i'm worried about - i pull 6 figures here and am unsure what is possible in other states in my industry. apart from the army, i've always just worked in CA where COL is super high.

i guess if any of that sounds useful, i'd be interested in doing summers as something. could be comms, IT, armory work, general welding, i could probably get maritime certs too.
>>
>>31372291
OP posting from phone.

Pretty good summation.

Does trying to use my boat for a seasonal security gig really sound that bad?

I'm serious here, I don't think this sounds so far fetched. At worst it seems like an expensive hobby.
>>
>>31372356
it would make for great tv.
try and get in touch with discovery or the history channel.
>>
Damn, hope it will work OP.

Seems like a pretty cool gig, wish I could help.
>>
>>31371669
If there is no demand it wont make money....so why bother?
>>
>>31371669
So really, you're just too old to join the coastguard and this is a roundabout way to get there.
Sorry to shit on your parade, but it's a terrible idea and you'll lose all your money. No one is going to cut into their margin to pay for some jackass to sail about with a FAL and protect them from nobody.
Although you are a tripfag, so have at it, hopefully it folds at a really inconvenient time for you.
>>
Hi OP I run a security company, the best way, and the way the customer will look at it, is to look at the loss and work backwards. In the UK most stores have realised that store detectives are a waste of money, essentially they are making a bigger loss paying wages than people stealing.

If we look at your business model, how often do pots get taken? How much is a pot being taken costing fishermen? What is the likelihood you will be in the right area at the right time? If you answer these you'll see if there is a market

Then from your end, how much would you want to make an hour? Would this cover the fuel of being out all day everyday on a boat? ax contributions and running costs? This will give you how much you need to charge, match this up with the other questions and you'll be golden.

Finally if there is lots of money to be made and a market. How would you know whose pots are whose (you have no legal powers to search someone else's ship)? Also what is the likelihood that people will know who you are and just avoid you? All they'd need to do is loiter an area find out who you are (pretty sure you need to be identifiable) then swipe things when you are gone.

DESU it's cool but I can't see it working, the whole situation sounds like it is money just sat around over a large area, which could be easily robbed and would be extremely hard to secure.

This and if you look at it from a retail perspective, the fishermen are paying very little for their 'stock' just their time and running costs. It'd be worth looking at the laws too, pretty sure you'd be lawsuited to all hell if you pulled a FAL on someone then innocent or guilty they could claim they picked up he wrong ones by accident and you pointed a gun at them with no authority

AK fisherman...

What the fuck, I cant even...
>>

This sounds quite interesting. Lived in AK my entire life. Sounds like it could be promising depending on how good the crabbing/fishing season is. Consider me interested
>>
>>31372494

>AK fisherman
>AK

Sounds like this guy beat you to it, OP.
>>
>>31372523
OP from phone again.

Where about are you from?

Any idea if there is a market? All my info on crab fuckery comes from personal here say, a few newspaper articles, and some Internet fishing forums bitching about it.
>>
>>31372507
Not him but think of it this way.

Every time a crab boat or trawler goes out they've already invested loads of money in fuel, boat maintenance, food for crew, crew, etc. and they have to make sure to catch at least the amount to offset those costs before making a profit. So they don't even know if they'll catch that, then some guy comes up to them and says "hey you know if someone stumbles upon your gear and it's full of crab I'll point my gun at them and tell them to put it down, but you've gotta cover my operating costs and a bit of profit", they're making a leap of faith that you'll be there at exactly the right moment and scare the other boat enough to dump it back into the ocean. You have no legal authority to board their vessel and search for paperwork indicating that pot belongs to them, and without that you're just a dude sailing around in your fishing boat with a gun.
Do yourself a favor and be the guy sailing around in your fishing boat with a gun.
Or, start a legal marijuana specialty security team. There's no boats but weed isn't hard to grow and there's always a market for it.
>>
>>31372553
You're right. It was a dumb idea that I've been playing around with.

I guess I'll just use the boat for fishing tours. Or something.

Bigger question here is what the fuck is a Marijuana special security team?
>>
>>31372507
Literally no crab skipper would probably not even give this guy the time of day. They would laugh and put their own AR on the table.

>Stealing crab.
>Implying and crew would want to pull or captain waste their time pulling double gear, potentially pulling bunk pots.
>Most crab pots are unique to boats and most Captains have pots made to certain specifications within Fishery regulations.
>>
>>31372567
I didn't mean to rain on your parade, it sounded cool as fuck, I'm just saying there's not much profit involved. Definitely get a boat though.

In states where growing marijuana is legal the growers usually hire armed security to prevent people raiding it and shit, because one marijuana plant is worth a lot of dosh. Specialize an armed security LLC of sorts for marijuana growers, with innawoods skills (lots of grow sights are in the boonies) and shooting skills. Couldn't hurt to look into.
There was an anon here many moons ago who waltzed around in the Rocky Mountains with an AR and PC getting paid like $20/hr guarding pot fields and greenhouses.
>>
>>31372578
I see. Thanks for the information.

You've been a great help. I understand why this idea is laughable now.
>>
>>31372547
I'm in Fairbanks. Not anywhere close to Valdez or Seward or any other major fishing ports. I honestly haven't heard much of crab/fish pirates lol. I'm sure you've done more research than I have. I don't read the paper or watch the news all that much. I'm sure it's there though, I know crabbing brings In some good money for the fisherman, so I would imagine would come the theft of trying to steal another's catch or haul. To me it really sounds like that boat or company or whatever would hire the security team to escort them out there and back. Like I said could be promising
>>
>>31372586
Oh, don't worry about it bud. I was just playing with ideas. Being financially free makes me daydream about doing stuff like this. I really miss the army and this seemed like a way to have fun in retirement.

I could see the pot farm security thing working out, but I would think that it would be saturated by now. That seems very cool as well though.
>>
>>31372614
Well it may be saturated but if you're telling the truth about your skills with branding and innovation there's no reason you can't become a name in the market. I'd imagine your local yokel pot farmer would rather support a small business. This is all assuming you're on the west coast because of the post time and fascination with Alaska.
>>
>>31372614
Well Alaska did just legalize it. They're still working out all of the finer details for distribution. But there will be a marker for growers and shit to sell and tax it. So that could be something to think about for a security business as opposed to fishing vessels. Also very interested in doing security for that as well. Making sure no innawoods hippies come ganking the crops lol
>>
>>31372630
I'll look into it. Thanks for the info.

I'm in Texas, by the way. Lived in alaska for a few years. Pretty great place. I fell in love with it. I want to retire up there, and I'm looking for seasonal work to keep my current standard of living after I'm done with my current job.
>>
>>31372659
I'm a Texan too, sorry for assuming you were on the worst coast. Third coast best coast but I'm hoping to make a trip up there to salmon fish one of these days. This summer was the last straw, I'm done with 95F in late September.
>>
>>31372670
It's fucking bad this year, isn't it? I'm not a fan of it. I do love fall and winter though. Sweater weather.

Fishing is great. I will say I enjoy fresh water more than salt. Kings are a battle to get in.
>>
>>31372695
It's really fucking bad. My summer watermelon and squash crops died due to heat and aphids and dove hunting is shit because there hasn't been a front to push the birds out of the panhandle. I even spent time planting sunflowers this spring in anticipation of a nice early fall and so far it's shit.
I had a crazy aunt move up to Kachemak bay in the 80's to homestead, thinking about sending her a carrier pigeon to ask if I can move in. The biggest fish I've caught is a 40lbs catfish and I'm ready for that to change.
>>
>>31372279
You are aware how much a boat capable of intercepting a fishing boat will cost? It will need to be large enough to berth 4-5 people but be fast enough to actually do anything, you will also need to pay your men even if no one accepts your contract because you are new and untested.
>>
I don't see who the fuck would pay a PMC to babysit some fucking crab pots...
>>
>>31372817
Especially since King crab seasons last 2-4 weeks, its a huge fucking gamble thinking you can make your investment back in that time and make enough to pay your men a decent wage.
>>
>>31372889

Probably more return on investment by simply investing in a crab vessel and hiring an experienced captain.
>>
>>31372915
Fine if you have $2 million to invest and are willing to accept that during some seasons you can actually lose money, the crab fishing fleet went from 250+ to around 90 in less than a decade.
>>
Hire me OP, together we will make the sea run red with the blood off the illegal fishers and Alaska will know fear
>>
>>31372474
>they could claim they picked up he wrong ones by accident
That's a possibility, but extremely unlikely. Crabbing laws in the US require that all pots are marked as property of the crabber using them with their name and license number in an obvious fashion. Usually that means the buoy and the pots themselves are tagged. Any fisherman that's caught with another person's pots would face massive fines and possible revocation of their license.
>>
>>31371669
A hearty kek indeed. Thanks OP. Idk if it's that I don't believe you or if I don't believe in you. Good luck with your bankruptcy.
>>
>>31371669
If you plan on hiring at any point please let us know. Just finished my EMT training about a month ago and am currently working private security (pays better than EMS here) while considering going for paramedic.
