New to guns, I only own a pistol and have never owned a rifle. I want to get an AR-15, but don't know where to start. Anyone have a preference or recommendation for a rifle that's under $1000?
>>
research rifles and their functions and cartridges and their applications, then dont get an AR-15
>>
>>31368339
http://palmettostatearmory.com/ar-15-05/rifle-kits.html

grab one of these and a stripped lower and built it yourself for half the price.
>>
>>31368401
What would you recommend?
>>
>>31368409
How hard is it to build if you know nothing about it?
>>
>>31368454
if the upper is already assembled it's really easy, just have to follow the instructions and do some lego building.

if the upper is not assembled, then you need an AR wrench and have to do a bunch of other bullshit to get the barrel and gas system set up
>>
>>31368339
I went Windham and it seems pretty solid so far, 650 out the door at one of the big box shops, and have 1000 put through it (I know it's not alot) but I've had no issues. Also heard of no probs w/the M&P.

t;entry level buyer
>>
>>31368520
The M&P's are the ones I've been looking at. Just didn't know if I should be looking at others as well.
>>
>>31368503

this.

I put my lower together and only lost one part.
>>
>>31368520
Also, the guys at the big box stores always seem to prefer whatever is most expensive, or overstocked at the time. So I never know if I should trust them or not.
>>
>>31368445
He's a moron, AR15 is great.
>>
i have a question as well if someone would be so kind as to help, im very new to guns as well besides the few my dad has i dont know much. i was wondering where i can find a classic looking ar15 like when they first came out or like an old m16 i think they looked like? would i have to build it or buy one already made and what are the search terms i would look for?
>>
>>31368454
Lower isnt too bad, no special tools needed you couldnt buy for more than a few bucks or probably have laying around already. Upper, dont bother. build the lower, buy the upper.
>>
>>31368615
Yeah, I figured it was an AK guy trying to stir things up.
>>
>>31368631
pretty much all bushmasters look like the m16.
>>
>>31368631
the general m16 look comes from an A2 18" upper and an A2 fixed stock

the lower and all the internals can be whatever you want
>>
What about DPMS, are they good rifles?
>>
Curious about CCMG rifles too
>>
Everyone is going to say what brand they prefer. Including myself. After being in the industry (manufacturing) here's my list of companies who offer products you can trust under a grand.

1, stag. Company has nothing special in terms of nice looking. They have good experience by their parent company being a machine shop and every stag product I have is my "mil spec" standard. They produce functional reliable builds. Everything is typically put together well and mechanically speaking you can trust this company.

2, colt. Like stag, these guys are used to doing a lot in house. Their finished forgings aren't as good as stags and I hate colt castle nuts. The area for staking is not as deep as stags.

Other companies that would give you good odds of no fuck ups mechanically are PSA, Windham...um, yeah. Lol. Avoid cock river, Olympic, dpms, delton.

People will argue with my list but fuck cosmetics. Stag is the best I have seen for keeping their lowers in check when they come off the mill. Hole locations and such.
>>
>>31368652
>>31368688
ah alright, thanks guys. i love that classic look. my dad has two ar15s a rifle and carbine but they are new and look neat and all but too tacticool for me

Yeah, colt is really the only rifle name I recognize. They're are so many choices and options that it's easy to get overwhelmed by it all. A list of the shit to avoid is probably easier to compile.
>>
>>31368797
Agreed. I should have just made a list of that but I can't stress enough I trust stag. My colt has a p223 Nikon with a 1/7 twist barrel. It shoots 68 grain loads well. Its my varmint popper. However my go to the woods/shtf ar is my stag model one. Iron sights.

Though I would say look for the blemished BCM's.
>>
>>31368866
Definitely buying it for shtf.
>>
>>31368749
Just noticed Academy has these.
>>
>>31368908
You can trust the deer. If you select stag, colt, or whoever, just ask for help in further staking your endplate into your castle nut. Most manufacturers really don't take the time. I will say one of my complaints is how many builds I see where people are somehow unable to torque their extension tube while keeping it inline and straight with the pistol grip. To many choads assembling stuff. I was a bit slower building our stuff, but I wanted each lower that lwft my care to be 100 percent legit.

No gopnik rifles.
>>
>>31368339
Buy a savage axis in .223.

Practice the basics for a long time. Don't go straight to a semi-auto. You'll likely train yourself to shoot poorly if you do, and you'll spend more money doing it. After you've mastered a bolt gun you'll be more effective at training with a semi auto.

Use a magnifying optic. It helps with training a lot because you appreciate how much you're moving the gun when your field of vision is small and zoomed in. For a .223 I would recommend a fixed 4x scope.

Also, consider .22 mag for a trainer.

I have an M&P, it doesn't have many bells and whistles, but it feels quality and hasn't fucked up once in roughly 1500 rounds. Great starter rifle imo.

I ordered a S&W M&P 15 Sport II, from what I hear and talking to my friends they're really decent guns for their price (~$600-700).

That being said, it comes to my FFL on monday and I haven't ever shot it so I couldn't say. But I bought a lot of accessories and ammo with it too, so if you're going for a starter ar, it might be a good one to get into it.

AR-15s are arguably the best rifle ever invented. They are so easy to "customize". The ammo is extremely common, and effective. If someone tells you its shit, just shoot them and see if they still think that. If anyone tells you not to buy your gun for reasons other than reliability, theyre probably a fanboy of aks or some shit.
>>
>>31368339
OP i recently built one myself.
I did a fairly no-frills build and its working great. Palmettostatearmory is your friend.

You can get a stripped lower + parts for $140-150, but i spent 170 for one that was already assembled.

Then a barreled upper assembly. I spent 20 on this.

Then charging handle + bolt carrier group = 20 + 90

After shipping and a rear sight+mag from cheaper than dirt, i spent about $550.

magpul furniture, 18in barrel, rifle length gas system.

Shoots like a dream. Beware the richfags on here that tell you that you should spend 400 for a lower or upper. You dont get what you pay for unless you are extremely particular about what you need in a rifle.
>>
>>31369795
*** $220 on completed upper assembly
>>
>>31369625
See, that's the problem with trying to research and learn about ar's. Every website you visit, someone has a dog in the hunt and try's to stear you in a different direction. Everyone's talking shit about everything else, and for newcomers it gets confusing. It still happens on /k/, but the helpful people usually drown the idiots out.
>>
>>31369833
That's a clear case of a lurkmoar deficiency.

Really, the idiots are easy to avoid. Anyone who advocates getting a piston AR, or a factory build from a shitty company like DelTon, or stupidly inconvenient parts like a Jewel FCG are just to be ignored outright. Everything else will, at the very least, land you with a serviceable rifle.
>>
>>31368445
i reccomend whatever you choose to get. I just researched into guns for a long ass time before I even considered buying one.

I was also railing on AR-15 fags because they literally truly think it is the most perfect gun ever designed, just as someone replied to you. Its not a piece of shit but I like larger caliber weapons, I think its ugly as fuck, and I don't like the charging handle, i dont like the dust flap or the mere existence of the forward assist, and fucking everyone and their mother has one and thinks it makes them the god of all firearms so I dont want to look like a fag.

The real problem is that these AR-15 fanatics will recommend it as the PERFECT gun for any situation. Hunting, home defense, concealed carry, duck hunting, skeet shooting, target shooting, long range, short range, stripped screw removal, tree trimming, SHTF, innawoods. Its the PERFECT "PLATFORM". Parts and ammo availabity and modularity are nice and its main upside I guess but I don't like it in the first place.

When someone asks for a >$1000 rifle I tell them this: Take the full $1000 out of the bank, go down to the store, buy something for $700 or less. Buy something kinda cheap that looks fun, maybe even something used, maybe even two used guns. Last time I bought a $1000 dollar gun it cost much more than that, shipping, ammo, accessories, tax, range time. So take the leftover money for all that. Get something to learn on and have fun but hopefully still with some practical use then save up for some nice shit.
>>
>>31369795
Awesome, I'll have to watch some videos on ar builds. Definitely seems cheaper.
>>
>>31369878
>i dont like the dust flap or the mere existence of the forward assist,
None of these things hurt anything you raging sperg.
>>
>>31369878
So you'll tell someone to flat out avoid getting a cheap, readily customizable rifle that's easy to shoot and maintain, complete with cheap and readily available ammunition, all because you "don't like it in the first place" and have a complete meltdown over people liking it? And on top of that, you don't want to like or be associated with something because you worry about how others will perceive you, like some kind of vapid woman? What kind of manchild are you and can you even own guns?
>>
>>31369878
That last paragraph is the plan, didn't specify that earlier. Gun, ammo, accessories, etc for $1000. Great advice.
>>
>>31368641
