Nothing wrong with the Air Force one though. Redundant canisters allow the user to change one without risking exposure. Drinking tube allows the user to hydrate without removing the mask. AF mask also has a better field of vision.

Considering how many people think gas masks look neat there has to be some sort of scientific explanation behind it.

It's because they look vaguely human, yet at the same time skeletal (emphasis on empty eye sockets, emulated by the large eye glass pieces where you rarely see the actual human eyes beneath))

That coupled with their association with deadly situations, thus death, thus again skulls, even if the skull thing isn't accurate the representation that if you ever see anyone wearing one/need one you're in a woefully bad situation, so some part of people who like them longs for a situation that requires them.
