Any rotary wing aircraft actually. They're not limited to doing strafing runs and helis are not that expensive. Cobra is like 10 million or something I think, Super Tucano is also similar as far as I remember.

>For insurgents.
No.

There's one exception though: the Tamil Tigers. Before being finally defeated, the rebel group had an "air force" consisting of 5 light four seater civilian airplanes with dumb-bomb racks.

They pulled the following shit off.
>Katunayake Air Force Base attack
The first LTTE air attack happened in March 2007. Two LTTE Z Lin Z 143 aircraft penetrated the outer defences of the Katunayake Air force base north of Colombo on Monday, March 26, 2007, killing three air force officials and wounding 16–17 others. It was believed the attack was targeted at the IAI Kfirs and newly acquired MiG jets which had been bombing targets in LTTE-controlled territory. The base is located near Bandaranaike International Airport, which had been attacked by the Tigers in July 2001. The LTTE are also the only terrorist group to field aircraft.
>Colombo raids
On April 26, Sri Lanka’s air defenses in Colombo fired into the sky following reports that unidentified aircraft had been spotted on radar. No attack was reported.
However, a few days later on the early morning of April 29, while the nation was watching the Cricket World Cup Final, a Tiger aircraft bombed two fuel storage facilities outside Colombo. Chaos followed and electricity in the capital was shut off for nearly an hour. There were no casualties and minimal damage. The security forces were unable to bring down the aircraft prompting much criticism from the public and opposition political parties.
>Anuradhapura attack
On October 22, 2007, Air Tigers launched a pre-dawn combined arms assault on a SLAF airbase at Anuradhapura, about 212 kilometers (132 mi) north of the capital, Colombo.

The assault started at around 3:20 am,[15] with LTTE ground forces attacking the airbase and overrunning key positions, including an anti-aircraft position, before the Air Tiger's ultra lights dropped bombs on government positions.

Met a dude who flew these in Vietnam, after being a toss bomber from an F-100 out of Osan in 1962. The early days of Vietnam, when he was put up in a hotel room in the south not in a barracks at an air base.
He loves these planes and recreationally flew Cessna's and Piper Cubs until he was 70 because they brought back his love for flying even though there were infantry units radioing to him for air support when he was in the Air Force. The guy just likes simple planes. He told me they'd always keep an ARVN in the backseat to point out Charlie for their flares, and when he got transferred to flying C-130's again he was mad.

Anyways, for a super duper budget CAS plane dedicated to fucking up African militias and crackhead Islamists, what do you think of tha Antonov An-2 as a base?

It's cheap as fuck, takes off and lands on short distances even loaded, can take some soldiers inside, and IIRC the Vietnamese already mounted some as gunships, with dumb rocket blocks under the wings, and machine guns pointing out of the doors.

It can take 2-3 tons of payload, so one ton could be "spent" in aramid panels to protect the underside of the plane (IIRC Mi-17s are protected like that), the rest would be the rocket pods, and a side mount coupling the HMG of your choice (Ma Deuce, KPV, hell, even a dual mount of MG3s or a M134) and an automatic grenade launcher (Mk.19, AGS-17, your call). You get a plane that can withstand small arms fire, can take some more-or-less heavy weaponry in the form of unguided rockets, iron bombs or napalm tanks, and can act as a baby AC-130 with machine guns and a grenade launcher. There is no AT weaponry, but the HMG and grenade launcher will fuck up technicals, and if your adversary has something bigger than technicals and APCs, don't cheap out on an An-2 and get something like a surplus Su-25 or AH-1 Cobra.
>>
>>31373503

IIRC, Gaddafi was using them near the end as his normal planes had been blown up. Could have an MG gunner hanging out of one or drop some barrel type bombs or grenades.

>>31373517
Thanks! Yeah, now that you talk about it, I remember these guys waving around their AN-2s and tractor-pulled rocket launchers with pride like it's 1947 all over again... It could be weird to say that outside of /k/, but I do want North Korea to get rekt some day... fuck, even the Russians and Chinese are running out of patience about the neighborhood aggressive sperg (and if I'm not mistaken, the Russians even have good relations with South Korea) ; that would mean lots of milsurp, both guns, gear and even vehicles, going to the civilian market, and a fresh load of war porn for us to enjoy.
I just wonder if the Norks could pull some nice actions ; their hardware is old as balls, but they look much more dedicated and willing to fight than any Third World army that got smashed in the last 15 years...

Coming back to the An-2, we can add that it's super rugged, so it would be able to operate from a nigger rigged field somewhere on a relatively flat strip in the middle of Africa, and the biplane configuration means that it has a lot of lift, and would be able to limp back home even after tasting some lead.

And I remember reading from the manual that in case of an engine failure, should the plane be ligtly loaded or not at all, you can safely flutter back to the ground with the 35 mph stalling speed...

TOS was short range especially in the first iteration so its employment is closer to the tank/assault gun than artillery. Soveit MRLSs wheeled and non armored are not suited for that.

TOS-1 literally stands for "Heavy Flamethrower System". Think of it less as a rocket launcher, and more as a flame thrower that delivers it's fire through rockets.

>TOS was short range especially in the first iteration so its employment is closer to the tank/assault gun than artillery. Soveit MRLSs wheeled and non armored are not suited for that.
Ah. Let me see if I have this right:
Wheeled MRL, 122mm = general support weapon for the brigade, usually for direct support(FYI this does not mean direct fire) but can do some deep fires as well
Wheeled MRL, 300mm = corps weapon mainly for deep fires but could do direct support if called on
Wheeled 240mm Uragan probably does the same job as 300mm Smerch?
Armored Tracked MRL, TOS-1 = for direct support only, since it has better armor and a range equivalent to a mortar
Is that how it works?

The Tamils are Hindu minority and live in the northern parts of Sri Lanka. Majority of Sri Lanka are Buddhists. The Tamils want seccession and nearly succeeded. But the Buddhists prevailed and massacred them. You can google pics of Sri Lankan soldiers with captured alive teenage son of LTTE leader and then later a pic of him dead by gunshot. Not taking any sides since the LTTE were brutal too but it was a very bloody conflict.

CAS of the WWII/Korean war mould (slow loitering low flying) is obsolete with the advent of MANPADS. Even Mexican cartels can shoot down helos and having even one pilot captured will be a PR disaster. Multirole fighters carry more bombs than many WWII bombers and can deliver them with pinpoint accuracy. There are still niche applications of prop planes but not for CAS.
