Sure, a few rounds will most likely not hurt but your ears work in a way that they take damage not only from loud noices but from beeing exposed to not so loud noices but for a prolonged time.

Same can be said for recovering from bullet wounds. Start off shooting yourself with .22 then after a while you will be resistant to them. Move up calibers until eventually you will be able to survive .50BMG no problem.
