Would rifle varmint bullets in a caliber large enough to take deer be good for home defense?
Pros:
>causes extreme tissue damage
>low risk of overpenetration
>can be inexpensively handloaded
Cons:
>bolt action may not offer the fastest follow up shots
>will leave blood all over the walls

OP, why not just get varmint bullets in any center-fire caliber? Why limit yourself to bolt action?

I mean if you want to stay in the real "deer caliber" range you could always get a browning BAR, AR 10, or a .243 PTR (if you can find one)

Wait a second. Aren't there semi auto rifles that use bolt action bullets? I know the SCAR-H is pretty powerful and uses semi auto.

Although I'd prefer something semiautomatic in .223, I would not feel undergunned with my .308 target rifle and loads. You can rack a bolt quite fast and 168gr A-maxes do loads of damage to deer-sized and smaller.
