Labour in the USA can easily cost multiple times what it costs in most other countries. While a qualified vatnik can work for a few hundred dollars a month (equivalent), in the US you're directly looking into the multiple thousands.

American ships cost a lot because they are built at American shipyards. Shipyard worker unions make labor prices sky high. Which is why so many shipyards have gone under.

That said, the LCS is a terrible ship.

And even the failures don't set things back much. Not like we can't maintain the existing coastal fleet or build more old designs. Or that our carrier program has to switch to ramps. Sure that money could have made an imperceptible dent in the debt, but why should we care about that? No one can collect.
