If you had to build a closed shooting range, how would you do it?
>>
>>31337998
Would you tell your friend to walk over to the target and murder him?
>>
This
>>
>>31337998
I really wish people weren't full retard so that public indoor ranges could look like this.
>>
>>31337998
A shit ton of ventilation and maybe a clay backdrop or something to keep lead dust down.
>>
The main problems are indeed:
- ventilation,
- soundproofing,

There are good soundproofing foams available for home studio but it's quite expensive...
Good old cardboard eggs boxes can do the job maybe?
>>
>>31338036
ventilation sure.

It would be expensive.

But how exspensive would it be for lead clean up over 10 - 15 years? Or do you just shoot TMJs and call it a day?

For people that have high millions im sure the only annoying thing for an avid shooter would be maintenance and replacement of years of accumulated shooting.

Shit if i had fuck you money I would make one of those large underground trap ranges they have in scanda/swiss country.
>>
>>31337998
I'd be worried about lead and noise for sure.

Personally I don't know what the codes are for having a rmshooting range on your property and I imagine that varries from state to state and county to county or city...though I imagine most cities don't allow it

If you own a large property without neighbors too close by, then I'd prefer an outdoor range like what Hickok45 has set up against a hill side.

If you must, I imagine an indoor lane range would be cool though honestly I'd like to set up an old timey shooting gallery.

Me I just have a bias for shooting outdoors.
>>
>buy land
>dig hole
>bury 4 40ft shipping containers
>weld them together
>fill with soundproofing foam and extractor fans
>build rest of house on top
>you now have a rifle range
>>
>>31338084
>watching movies from the 30s.
>cities at one time had .22 shooting galleries on the side of their metropolitan buildings.

What went wrong?
>>
>>31337998
I personally would not want to shit lead and powder where I eat and sleep...

I'm not a retard like Mac and eat microwavable pizza rolls on theshooting lane without washing my hands.

10 feet into the back yard is as close as I'd want to discharge a firearm from my home.

Cleaning normal dust inside every two weeks is more than enough.
>>
>>31338090
>bury 4 40ft shipping containers
We've been through this before in unnaground threads. Shipping containers don't last underground and will cave in and collapse. They're not designed to be buried.
>>

Eh...anti gun culture/softening of American male culture in general.

Basically the typical story how the "Cold War" generation made Americans give up their rugged individual rights, freedoms and responsibilties for the promise of protection by the government.

As such todays youths are not expected to have self control or discipline and having such virtues makes you stand out in a negative way as you are not part of the herd.

Big cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and others became "safe spaces" long before tumbler ever existed.

Seriously in any free state the cheapest and smartest option is buying land out in the sticks, build a range, pay the $70 yearly property tax and drive out there. And when your done paying off the 10K loan or whatever you spent on the loan and have a piece of property you can sell later.
>>
Step one: be a multi millionaire.
Step two: hire an architect
Step three: hire a general contractor

Anything less is just nigger rigging
>>
>>31338171
>Not getting that green text is a set up for Ironic commentary and humor...

...buuut you may find some who will agree with those thoughts...after all, soccer moms are typically anti gun...we have a number of prominent female politicians who are avid anti gun agenda pushers...only now fo we have a few young cuck californian senators pushing gun control and Brown and Bloomberg are just rich old men who don't want the masses to have guns.

How do regular ranges manage lead?
>>
>>31338115
Is there a way to effectively reinforce shipping containers to do this?

What if:
>bury and weld containers
>place reinforced concrete beams every 5-10ft next to containers
>lay concrete slabs across containers supported by beams
>bury it all
>build home over top of it
>>
>>31338271
HVAC doing 4 air changes per hour and triple HEPA filtering if their patrons are lucky. But that only pulls lead & mercury out of the air that goes through the filters. It won't get all the airborne lead particles but airflow management can help. The sad fact is lead particles will cling to booth walls and the shooting tables cross contaminating firearms and clothes.
>>
>>31337998
Outside.
>>
>>31338329
It can be closed AND outside if you have a big ass yard...
>>
>>31338292
That's fucking stupid you can avoid all the container bullshit by built a trench reinforced with cinder blocks and put sandbags over the top for a few thousand dollorinos and a couple weekend of hardwork.
>>
>>31338271
We have bullet traps that fill up buckets in the back of our range. When a bucket becomes too full its weight will cause a wheel to cycle in a new bucket to be filled. Apparently this doesn't work (the only reason why this doesn't work is because the owner is a lazy fuck and doesn't make his employees replace the full buckets in a timely manner) so we're switching to a bulletproof rubber trap. His business is going to tank and I'm going to be laughing the whole time while looking for a new job.
>>
>>31338084
>I'd be worried about lead

What do you mean? The bullets?
>>
just wear a respirator in your house at all times

it looks cool, chicks will dig it. Plus you'll be prepared for when the police tear gas you to serve a warrant for violating your town's building codes
>>
Do indoor firing ranges really need ventilation to clear the smoke?
>>
>>31338422
>is airborne lead dust in an enclosed space bad for me

well its like chicken pox, if you already have autism you can't catch it again
>>
>>31338090
Better option is to use precast box culvert
>>
>>31338422
Why yes u dumdum. Preferably so that there is fan behind the shooter to prevent smoke getting to the shooter. Powder smoke is toxic + lead and copper that comes out of barrel. Next ventilation fan should be placed above the target or the wall where the bullet hits to suck out these lead fumes and smoke.
>>
>>31338024
While sound and reverb look like they would kick ass, brass cleanup looks like a fucking nightmare.

Most of the .22 ammo used in these galleries was either compressed iron or compressed graphite if sources are to be believed. And BB and CB Shorts.
>>
I like this idea
>into some land
>rent excavator
>dig 20'x100' trench, 4' deep
>stack excess on sides and back for backdrop
>dirt makes for sound barrier, large enough to not need ventilation
>plant grass on dirt mounds for erosion and aesthetics
>>
>>31339308
I rather like this design. Seems more utilitarian than fun though. Personally I'd rather have an outdoor range like Hickok45 on the YouTubes. But requires an awful lot of land.
>>
>>31339821
I agree. I prefer outdoor shooting to indoors. But the idea of a secret underground range under your house sounds crazy fun.

Soundproofing an indoor range has a unique problem. You're never going to get perfect powder consumption, so every surface in the place is going to slowly accumulate a layer of unburnt powder that may ignite at some point.
>>
>>31340662
that's...fucking awesome lol
>>
>>31340662
Ventilate and wash it well regularly.
>>
>>31339526
Make sure to include drainage to a lower elevation
>>
>>31340662
Fuuuck reminds me of how smoke can catch fire since it's unburnt fuel. I had never heard someone mention this problem before, thanks man.

Fire is freaky.
>>
10'x10'x50' space. Meets airflow code for 10,000cubic feet for lack of ventilation. Still, I would include a forced air ventilation at the shooting benches. The vent tubes can also be repositioned for personal needs. The walls would be poured concrete, covered with a wooden frame work with foam insulation, OSB, and Firecode Dry Wall. Non-flammable carpet throughout, thin insulation on the interior walls around the shooting bench. It would still be loud, so proper hearing protection is a must have regardless.
>>
This is cool but looks spensive as hell. Probably could use the extra money to but a lot of land out in the sticks and have your own outdoor range.

But an indoor range under the basement sounds cool as fuck though.
>>
If you have the money for a professional looking shooting range in your basement, then you probably have money for tin bullets.
It's an indoor range, so you could recover all the tin pretty effectively. It's only like a $16,000 investment for a ton.

I knew a hillbilly while going to school that would shoot his .22 inside the house while watching TV. Had a huge tree stump literally set up down his hallway and during commercial breaks he'd just start shooting the fuck out of it, told me he accidentally almost shot his dog once. Rednecks are fucking nuts.
>>
>>31337998
Outdoors, for starters. Indoor ranges suck balls and only exacerbate the noise issue.
>>
>>31338115
Technically they're not buried.

All he did was dig a pit, put boxes in them, and then built a house over them.

Shipping cans aren't going to collapse from wood / linoleum / tile floors.
>>
>>31338325
The range I go to, it's air circulation is like a good tail wind in a aircraft.

You are literally being sucked towards the far end of the range.

I swear they have one of those wind tunnel turbines drawing the air that way.

The good side is, it's fucking clean at the loading tables and booths. No smell of fumes, no dust.

Makes me wonder what size of filter they have upstairs.
>>
>>31343771

mine is the same way
>>
>>31343782
Exactly.. So this is what should happen in EVERY range.

If it's not sucking you clean, it's a shitty range.

When I was a kid we used to shoot into something like pic related in our garage in southern Indiana with all caliber of hand gun and looking back I'm surprised we didn't get maimed by spalling or outright killed by an errant ricochet.
As an adult I don't even go to indoor ranges knowing what I do about residual lead toxins and shit. Smart people shoot outdoors, they wash with cold water before they handle food and they use PPE when they clean their weapons.
There are built in dangers in our hobby and it's up to each of us to learn what they are, Like don;lt take you wife shooting when you six months before you start trying to make babies, don't use cleaning solvents like Hoppes unless you have a fan pulling it away from the fucking air you breath.

Seriously anon, I shoot at indoor ranges, do all maintenance on my cars, bike, and guns myself, and use lots of solvents, grease, and other general "hazmat" materials at work. Never wear gloves, don't have cancer, had a child who is legitimately smart, etc

Shit the regulations on products out there these days are so strict, short of actually eating the stuff on a regular basis you would be hard pressed to find anyone who had any negative symptoms from simply handling these things.

It's kind of expensive, but you can buy these steel chutes you place at the end of your range (or you could make them if your not a fag). Basically what they do is gently slope in to catch bullets, and then they go into a slit into a circular chamber, where they spin around the cylinder until they run out of energy into a collection bucket, so you can even collect the lead. Pic related

I've thought about setting up a .22 range in my basement. It's all dirt-floor anyways. But I live in a small town and I don't think they'd allow it. Plus with my basement layout, the downrange end would be the end that faces the road.
>>
Unless your have a decent way of venting air, lead & unburnt powder contamination is going to get gross quickly. At the very least don't let children/pregger women shoot in the range since they are more vulnerable than adult are to lead.

Reinforce the container with welding and a few I beams, no problem.
Alternatively, you can buy autocontainers, which are reinforced from the factory as they are filled with hydraulics and hoists.
The ones in my fleet are 53ft long and weigh 10T metric, empty.
>>
>>31347718
The containers aren't designed to take weight directly on top either, check out a container and you'll notice four pronounced mounting points on the corners.
Containers are held together by tension and can only withstand weight on the reinforced corners.

Nobody was ever killed or hurt. Pretty sure the worst injury anyone ever had was a scrape or a cut from hand tools.

cheapest way i can think to install a range in your basement. expensive part would be making it safe and legal. even then you can get some shredded rubber and make bullet trap wall from that and some garden bed liner.

the bench and target returning mechanism are optional and i'd spend that money on soundproofing like OP pic so neighbors dont fuck with me.

hell, good way to make a bunker attached to your basement as well long as the foundation can work with it.

Why not justa concrete pipe 1m diameter going from your basement, with a fan behind you and an extractor fan at the end of the tube, ans a bullet receptor. You can soundproof this with sound tissue and egg boxes.
