Why did 8mm Mauser never catch on in the US?
Even .303 British and 7.62x54R are more widely available.

It used to be relatively popular, but once the surplus market dried up (both ammo and most rifles bar Yugos), people just lost interest. It sits in the same place as .30-06, but without the century of being ingrained in the collective Fudd psyche.

Because pretty much everyone using it was in Central Europe, and they by-and-large stopped using it after 1945 because reasons. Portugal, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia where the only ones left using it, and they gradually shifted to other calibers because NATO and WAR-PAC. Yugoslavia held onto it as a DMR cartridge until the early 2000s at least.
