Actually this OP marlin795 is like 160 magazines are like 10 bucks a pop. 22 is one of the cheapest and available ammos. You can move up to other calibers as you become financially able in the future.

Also do you absolutely have to go through FFLs to get a gun online? In know in MD to get a long gun you can just walk into a gun store, buy it and then walk out but what about online sales?

For ~$300 you can get a good mosin or maybe a decent Mauser, but they're not exactly "cheap" to feed. Honestly, not much is really cheap to shoot nowadays except .22lr.
