Can anyone tell me if this filter is safe?
>>31316853
Looks safe just be sure to lube up and stretch correctly.
>>31316853
This is the mask it came wit
>>31316853
Its russian, so probably filled with asbestos.
>>31316853
Safe until you damage it. Then asbestos for days.
>>31316927
What kind of damage?
/r/ing a good book or online guide on gas masks and filters. Kind of like a "Jane's" publication. (Bonus points if civilian models are covered as well)
>>31316986
Just casual lung cancer.
That mold wouldnt be good for ya either
>>31316986
Punctured, or maybe even a severe enough dent.
Theoretically, post-1965 Soviet filters shouldn't contain asbestos.

>Can anyone tell me if this filter is safe?
after rounding 3rd?
most filters lose their vaibility over time which means that if it looks old, and that one does that it probably won't do the job that it was originally designed for.
with no more information than what you have provided that would only be an educated guess.
many newer filters come in airtight bags that once opened, start the clock ticking.

No. Stop spreading that false info, it makes me mad how many people believe this. Most Russian filters havent contained asbestos since WWII and it was completely removed shortly after. Any GP5 or newer filter will be asbestos free. in fact theres loads of videos of guys cutting the filters open and showing the material composition, and if they contain asbestos, they cannot be imported to US. You also dont automatically get lung cancer if youre exposed to chromium or asbestos for a short time, and if theres NBC, youve got bigger issues than developing lung cancer 20 years from now.

Not necessarily. Expiration dates on filters only exist as a check by date. Every few years the military checks a batch of filters to make sure they were stored properly and if they show no signs of damage, they keep using them til new gas masks are developed. Activated charcoal doesnt break down, it clumps up when exposed to contaminants in the air. Unless seal is broken, if they're stored dry, they'll last almost indefinitely. Check for dents or cracks etc. I have polish filters from the 60s that were still vacuum sealed and I opened them and tested them with all sorts of contaminants and they passed.

additionally, some institute in poland did a study of old surplus russian gp5s and found that the filters were still effective for up to 8 hrs of NBC protection if sealed and the masks effective for up to 24. Currently hunting for the sauce on the study

Looks like mold. It's no good.
Part of me was hoping that it was some sort of russian antipersonnel mine.
>>31316853
Oh boy this thread again
OP it's moldy, throw it away
>>31318698
>>31318938
So I emptied out the filter for use science and cosplay use and am planing on getting a new gp5
For future reference
>>31316853
Yeah, it is a fine carbon filter, maybe some damage to the paper membrane based on that dust, but I think they all start looking that way. Don't listen to the memes, there is no asbestos in that. The way that the carbon dust is on it makes it questionable, but you should be fine. My GP-5's filter is the same way and I use it, but if you start tasting the carbon or spit black after use for the love of self preservation stop use immediately. Slav shit is good shit, you'll be fine.
