Anyone got any detailed info on current ROK armed forces equipment for infantry?

Just something I'm curious about, going to dump some pictures of ROK infantry.

pic looks like an LBV-style vest, maybe some body armor underneath (ROKMC)

More ROKMC, with some kind of domestically-produced vest. Kind of resembles the Russian 6Sh112

weird... do .50 cal machine guns usually come with ~30 round belts? or is that example just for training?

there's not much honestly, I'm just going off of google images. Wish I had more, but I can't into Korean and am busy shitposting elsewhere.

AFAIK you can link belts at however many you want, this may be just an example for training.

>>
A lot of this looks like the leftover cold war shit we(US) were issued before the GWOT modernization.

I also expect there's going to be a significant difference between the gear the trainees and guys just doing their manditory service get versus the active units. Just like SF do whatever the fuck they want, which then filters to Ranger getting the cool toys first, then Infantry, then everyone else, then the pogs, then the reserves.
>>
>>31313356
Makes sense. The newer domestic gear does look pretty good and practical IMO, although I'm not sure why armies still go with the plate carrier and load-bearing stuff being separate.

I'd also like to know more about ROK gear. It seems that atm they're transitioning to some newer stuff while maintaining a lot of Cold War-era gear. Also it seems that more active units (ones that are close to the border/patrol the DMZ) get newer gear.

While US do reuse aluminum magazines they weren't meant for that or at least meant to be cycled out. When you have derp conscripts and and a need for equipment to last for a lot of derp conscripts to get thier dick beaters around, even if that is only by a margin because that margin could mean the diffrence between having sneakers for everyone and being short a couple.
>>
>>
>>31314136
South Korea has 4.5 million reservists, and they do plan to equip all of them if shit goes south (figuratively and literally).

The South Korean army hordes stuff worse than the Soviets did right after WW2. They still have thousands of M48's parked in storage in case worst comes to worst. Warehouses full of M14's, you name it.

Steel mags are cheap, they last, and they have millions of the things sitting around in case of mobilization.
>>
>>31314216
Someone should import a bunch, provided they aren't complete shit like thier AK mags, Americans love steel magazines.

I get that they have advantages and it's not just a ROK thing, Europeans love steel mags too. They're just kinda rare in the US, where pretty much everyone uses aluminum or pmags.
>>
>>31314227

Koreans aren't selling their "surplus" because they are keeping them for their own SHTF scenario.
>>
>>31314289
I heard they've been GI for awhile now. They had some technical issues and halted production for some time but the rest are supposed to be issued later this year.

Adapters like that are common among civilian Daewoo rifle owners here in the states. Most Daewoos here were imported after the 1994 AWB and came with an awkward thumbhole stock. After the AWB expired, aftermarket companies jumped on the market for adapters allowing Daewoo owners to convert their rifles back to the way they should be. That's why Daewoos in the US often have more modern collapsible stocks or the incorrect fixed stock.

Those look like camoed versions of the kinds of pouches we had back in the 1950's
>>
>>31314917

Steel helmets? 0.

If you mean the fiberglass ones made in the 70s, about 30 to 70, 70 being the older ones.

Personal body armor, the plate carrier style new ones like my picture above are rarer, but if you're on the DMZ, you will be issued one. We have older flak jacket style body armor with rifle plates, and they are more common.

If you are in a frontline division facing the norks, and are either infantry, artillery, or MP, you will be issued body armor of some sorts in case of a war. Other than that, unless you're smack right in the middle of the dmz like I was, no body armor for patrol use.
>>
>>31314993
Yeah, I cannibalized the poiches from older alice style gear because they work and they're large enough to store stuff in.
>>
>>31315001
>Fiberglass
Wow. So how much protection would that be?
>Flak jackets with rifle plates
I had heard of similar conversions done with PASGT vests, all I can think of is that would be quite a bit more weight to carry. But better than not having plates I guess.
>smack right in the middle of the DMZ
Ever see/hear/notice anything from the Nork side? Ever see any Norks up close? What's the average perception of the Nork military in the ROK military?
>>
>>31315032
1. Stops 9mm and fragmentation.

2. Yeah, never liked them.

3. Oh it was horrible. Every fucking night at random intervals they blare songs about the great general. Couldnt fucking sleep. We have really good observation devices so we can watch them jack off in the bushes. Hah.
They have clean uniforms and long trenchcoats, so I guess theyre better supplied than the vast majority of norks.
The closest I got was about 200 meters when we got out to reset some automatic landmines, fucker looked like he was 15. Made rude gestures at us and pointed his rifle at us. We did the same. Later on they blared stuff about how what we were doing was a war crime and we should defect to the north.

Average perception? A mix of utter disgust and pity. Mixed with some hatred.
>>
>>31315094
Can DMZ assignments be voluntary or you just get randomly picked?

How spooky does it get there?
>>
>>31315157
Mostly voluntary.

It's not too spooky, but once I found a ammunition clip for a garand and fingerbones nearby. Makes you wonder if the bunker you're in was made on top of dozens of dead bodies.

It's very serene. Especially at night when the sky is filled with stars and the giant Korean flag and the UN flag is waving in the breeze. Then a deer steps on a landmine and you realize where and what you are.

Shit happens, like when the norks flew UAVs over us and the bunker next to us shot 50 cal at it and almost hit us. I was ready to lob a ATGM at them for being retards.
>>
>>31315094
>we can watch them jack off in the bushes
Lol. Did you observe any other shit from the Norks? Did any of them look hungry? Also I've heard that quite a bit of wildlife lives in the DMZ, are there instances where animals set off mines/trigger any alarms?
>>
>>31315220
Fuck yes. One fucker was beating up this other guy one time. From what we could deduce, he was late to his post by 3 minutes.

We had one we nicknamed the taekwondo master because he was always practicing his moves during duty. He was pretty good at roundhouse kicks. He would sometimes practise on his I guess inferiors.

None of them looked too hungry, but none of them were fat either.

Animals trip alarms and step on mines all the fucking time. This one time this fucking deer stepped on a mine we had just planted and sent deer bones into one of my squad leader's thighs. That was fucked up.

There are a LOT of wildlife, even species thought to be extinct. A dozen eagles would come down and eat from where we dumped our food waste.
>>
>>31315212
>a deer steps on a landmine and you realize where and what you are
Huh, always wondered if wildlife set off traps at the DMZ
>sent deer bones into one of my squad leader's thighs
Jesus fucking Christ

So is discipline on the SK side harsh? I can't imagine is as severe as the norks but I could understand being on edge given where you are.
>>
>>31315271
If you're recon, it's harsher, but nowadays what with the New Army Culture program thing we have going on pretty tame overall. No swear words and suggesting your mother is not a classy lady anymore.

Apparently the Americans dont shout at each other! So we must look civilized in front of our allies! Hah.

Nobody beats people anymore, anyway.
>>
>>31315294
Do you think the new program will affect readiness or do you think it doesn't really matter given how it's not likely for the war to get hot anytime soon?
>>
>>31315320
Personally I think learning and training is more important than being scared of your superiors, so not really, no.
>>

I remember a long time ago the sorks would use that k3? with a drum? whats your medium machinegun m8? old m60s? 240s?
>>
>>31315457

We have 2 SAWs (K3) per squad actually. M60s are on vehicles or reserve divisions.
>>
>>31315479
very well. In round drums or do you guys just belt it up also?
>>
>>31315494
Belt or very somtimes rifle mags. Never saw a drum mag.
>>
>>31315328
Another kimchifag here, my dad was in the marines, and apparently he had ample opportunity to get beaten up and beat other people up on a daily basis.
Although the conscripts and regulars have a much more proper culture and formal discipline, apparently today's marines are still pretty harsh where the culture is concerned.
