Why was the concept of the tank landing ship abandoned? Did something else come along and render them obsolete?
Airplanes.

Airplanes can deploy tanks onto a beach?
TOW missiles, etc made it so infantry can destroy enemy armor. Tanks weren't necessary after that.

Landing ships on shore is a bad idea and has been for a while. They use smaller ships (LCACs or LCUs) to bring the tanks to shore in combat. There are RORO ships similar to LSTs.

Keep in mind, they can transport more than just tanks. Tanks are just their raison d'ĂȘtre.
There is a massive doctrinal & material disjoint between the realities of amphibious assault, and the actual capabilities of the US military
But maybe this is the fault of the marines since they are the ones supposed to be capable of it, and they abandoned such capability decades ago(never wanted it either)

The Go Jun Bong-class is an example of an LST still in service. It can carry 258 troops, 12 battle tanks, 14 amphibious assault vehicles and eight 2.5t class trucks. It just seems weird to me how this entire class of amphibious ship seemingly disappeared without explanation.
Marine hovercrafts can deploy Abrams

Wut?
>>31312092
Nope

Wow this boat has wind energy, how straightforward of the army to think of this!
>>31312295
Is that thing real?
>>31312365
No its fotoshopped

>>31312365
Sure.

Also South Koreans operate these cuties.

I can provide no reasoning to it, but must say that any ship of that size ramming. itself into the shallows will never cease to be based to me.

Eww an ugly jewish tank.

WIND BOAT
>>31312492
In the sense that it produces wind.
>>31312477
do you even MBT identification?
>>31312620
Also, kikes don't amphibious warfare. Not a priority.
>>31312636
Right. All Israeli landing craft have been retired. None of the new ships will have well decks either.
