The difference in performance between top .45 loads and top 9mm loads is insignificant shot-for-shot. If you're defending yourself with el-cheapos than a .45 would be better for you.

That being said, just about all 9mm is cheaper than comparable .45, as are the guns chambered for them. And a Glock 19 is just about the definition of "pistol" these days, so go for it. Buy used, worst case you get a shot out barrel you can replace for $100.

Rent both (if you can), pick the one that gives you the most turgid erection.

Depends on what you want to do. i just like knowing that i can drive nails at 25 yards with my 9mm no problem. its all about having confidence in your weapon and being able to put shots on target when it counts.

I find .45 has a better recoil impulse. 9mm is too quick and snappy even with an all steal gun like a Beretta 92.

.45 has more recoil but I find it to be extremely controllable.

As far as stopping power goes, .45 vs 9mm is pretty insignificant, so logic says go with 9mm.
You only really start to get penetration improvements/overall-pain-caused-to person-shot improvements the minute you hit .357 mag.

I'm also on a budget. Wife stayed home with our kids for 2 years while focusing on school. I can reload 9 super cheap. As far as defense goes, there are some pretty awesome 9mm HP rounds out there. I use federal 147 gr hydra shok, because it was what was available when I sold my 1911 and snagged a glock 19.

The best advice is the standard advice. Shoot both the 9mm and the .45 ACP and see which one you feel most comfortable with.

I personally own 9mm handguns. I have shot .45 ACP guns, but I am more comfortable with the 9mm. Aside from the standard advice I will give my opinion, buy the Glock 19. I prefer Smith & Wesson M&Ps and SDs, but that is me. The Glock 19 (and maybe later a 26, for easier carry) will provide you with a home defense pistol, a carry pistol, and a pistol for shooting fun at the range all in one. (I would advise a second G19 or a 26 as a spare gun so you have one should the need for one arise.)
