Add charging handle and iron sights, move dust cover and remove weird thing protruding from the bolt.

Pins seem off too and trigger group seems offset to the right.

All American from vault 34, always one of the first things I go get when i'm near NV.

It can have a charging handle and the mag release on the oppsosite side. Other than that it looks like a "normal" wood furnitured M16

In all honesty, this wouldn't really work well in IRL due to typical /v/ design, but I'll play along.

Well there are several options.

Option one, we make an AR-15 like it's meant to be and slap a charging handle on it.

Option two, we make it like an AR18, essentially getting rid of the forward assist.

Option three, we slap on a side charging handle. Resulting gun may vary.

I've actually been considering making an NV service rifle since I have a bunch of AR parts lying around. All you'd need is an a2 slabside upper and a side charging BCG.

This is the BCG you'd need. All you'd need to do is mill out a slot in the upper receiver for the handle to travel through.

Why not use the forward assist?

Cocking just accomplishes resetting the sear and putting the bolt into battery. There's no reason why a forward assist lever/button can't be used to (awkwardly) pull the bolt back by turning it into a manual operating rod.

There would have to be some type of claw to catch some cams on the bolt, obviously under spring tension so they can pivot back when the bolt reciprocated. Of course that's if it's still going to be used as a forward assist, it has to hit something which means that something will hit the claw but if it's not well it's just a weird cocking handle.

You could go kraut space magic and have the bolt drop out of battery when a mag's seated. Then to cock and to put in battery the forward assist is hit, locking it in place and that action pulls an operating lever or linkage that cocks a hammer. (we really don't know how it works, so it could be hammer-fired)
