kekked, even the No. 4 Mk Is had magazine cutoffs to start with. Most troops quickly took these out in the field and the magazine cutoffs were removed in later production, but early in WWI that's how it was. Also, soldiers were issued a single magazine. As you can imagine, with the SMLEs, the magazine was one of the major failing points.

Most of the bolt action rifles around 1900 had 5 round magazines except for Carcanos and SMLEs. The Garand obviously didn't exist until 1935-36.

It's called expediency. Even 2006, it wasn't enough of a hot button issue and there was still popular opposition to it that being in favor of fag weddings was a bad idea.
