Let's get a book thread going. Currently reading pic related. I like it so far, though the cover art wrongly displays a Redcoat instead of a Greenjacket.

Are Tom Clancy books /k/ approved?
>>
>>31197585
His early ones generally are. The later ones get kind of iffy and most of them after 2003 are either ghostwritten or just by someone else entirely with his brand name slapped on.

Nearly every single work made by Motafumi Kobayashi
>>
>>31197751
Does that really count as a book, though?
>>
>>31197772
Yeah. He made visual autobiographies depicting the life of several generals, even a few on several operations. The most well known being Barbossa.

I've always thought about the Sum of All Fears fits in the timeline as a prequel.

>Who's this Jack Ryan and why should I care what he says about the Red October?
>He's a senior CIA analyst and expert on Russian political affairs. He also prevented nuclear war pretty much by himself.
>Huh?
>Yeah, remember when a nuclear blast took out the superbowl and almost wiped out the previous administration?
>Oh yeah, but lets still be overly skeptical of him and his abilities for the next few books.

75% of everything Bond has written is great. IIRC he was the one with Clancy that wrote the Battle of the North Alantic in Red Storm Rising.

A Storm of Steel
>>
>>31197571
That book is insanely good. Perfectly executed. Wonderfully didactic and yet so masterfully written that it never feels like a textbook. I had to read it on PI and enjoyed it so much that I re-read it enough to get in trouble.
May I suggest the FLASHMAN Papers, notably Flashman, Flashman And The Angel Of The Lord (John Brown), Flashman At The Charge (Crimea, and Russian intrigues in the Great Game) and Flashman And The Mountain Of Light (India, and the Khalsa of the Sikhs)? Rigorously historically accurate novels, sort of like Victorian James Bond.
>>
>>31197869
If by book you mean textbook. I don't mean it's bad but Damn his books are big.
>>
>>31198361
Heard good things about Flashman, though haven't gotten into them. I utterly devour the Sharpe novels, though.
>>
>>31198439
I have not read the Sharpe novels. Flashman has a lot of history and military stuff, but they have a lot of humor that I imagine is not in the Sharpe novels.
>>
>>31197810
Can we hear agree nearly all took Clancy except the mobile op center whatever they were called. The jack Ryan's awesome, the John Kelly (and rainbow related) books are still one of the best executed stories I've ever read and I can safely see a book of his I haven't read and know that I'll enjoy it. In your opinion, why would you say he manages to make so many good military books?
>>
>>31198466
Yeah, the Sharpe novels aren't especially comedic. But they are great if you enjoy a grunt's eye view of the Napoleonic wars and Sharpe being so badass you wonder if he's the progeny of some ancient god of war. Like in one book, he realizes that he is outmatched by a swordsman, and so allows himself to be stabbed in the thigh so the suction of the wound prevents his attacker from withdrawing the blade long enough for Sharpe to take him down. That's on the tame end of what he's done.

I was looking for a book on US special forces in Vietnam such as MACV-SOG and LRRPs. Anyone know of any?

Poilu has been a pretty interesting, if quite long, account of the first world war from the French perspective. Not quite as striking as Junger's Storm of Steel, but a good read nonetheless.

My old man met Dick Marcinko a few times and said he'd never met such a bullshitter in his life. Baffled by it too, he couldn't understand why the guy would make so much crap up when he's done a lot of legitimately badass things.

Kind of like Chris Kyle I guess. Dude was a SEAL sniper, which is about as operator as it gets, but felt the need to make up a bunch of nonsense for some reason.

Russian as fuck. Really great read.

An awkward teenage looter and a misfit Cossack deserter are given a chance at escaping execution, if they manage to find one dozen eggs within the starving city of Leningrad (so that an NKVD officer can bake a cake for his daughter's wedding.)

book will make you *hungry*.
>>
>>31197810
Er...you realize they're already in the same timeline? The movies do things out of order: in the books he's already pretty highly placed by the time Sum happens. It also goes off fairly differently.

In the books, it's Patriot Games that happens first; Jack is some special liason with the Brits because they like his having saved the royals that one time.
