The other lets you either pull the trigger to make it go boom, or cock the hammer and then, lightly, pull the trigger to make it go boom. The other always requires you to first cock the gun before pulling the trigger.

Single action only releases the hammer to hit the primer on the round of ammunition in the weapon's chamber. You have to cock it manually, then you squeeze the trigger.
Double action pulls the hammer back and releases it to hit the primer in one squeeze. You do not have to cock it manually, but most of today's double action weapons allow you to you want.
Because it's doing more, a trigger on a double action handgun will require more effort to squeeze than a trigger on a single action handgun. But this can be remedied by taking it to someone that knows what the fuck they're doing and getting parts filed down or replaced to get a "hair trigger". This requires a very light trigger squeeze to function, so you need to be much more careful so that the weapon does not fire when unintended.

Nope. The most powerful production handgun in the world, the S&W 500, is a double action revolver.

Part of the perception is probably because back in the 1950s Ruger made the stupidly strong for its size single action Super Blackhawk. Handloaders discovered it would handle ridiculously hot loads that wold blow other guns apart. The the wildcat cartridge guys began building five shot super magnum guns on Super Blackhawk frames, like .454 Casull, .475 Linebaugh and .500 Linebaugh, to name a few. Eventually several gun makers began building their own single action revolvers, like Freedom Arms and Magnum Research. Ruger brought out the .454 Casull Super Redhawk in the late 1990s and taurus followed suit with the .454 Casull Raging bull, both double action revolvers. Then in 2003, S&W decided to reclaim top dog status with the S&W 500.

A lot of big bore Magnum shooters still like single action revolvers for their lighter weight, though, since the main use these guns see is either Hunting, silhouette shooting, or being a range toy.

Revolvers were already mentioned.

There is also single and double action automatics. It's like revolvers but applies to the first shot.

A 1911 is an example of s single action. The hammer has to be back in order to fire. The slide cocks the hammer when it moves back. De-cocking the hammer acts like a second safety.

Double action automatics, like double action revolvers, will fire with the hammer forward, just with a heavier trigger pull. Again, the slide cocks the hammer after every shot.

Striker-fired automatics are like a DAO revolver. The is no provision to manually cock the hammer/firing pin.
