So a friend of mine recently got a hold of this, asked if I could help him figure out where it came from.
Its quite clearly a 37mm shell, but of what orgin and for what weapon system?
Description: 6.5 inches long with a 37mm dia. Base markings are bursting ord. Bomb, 37-85, PDPs, 195, 1 17.
Is this interwar? Ww1? Earlier? Help would be appreciated.
looks like it would make a nice butt plug

It's a 37-85 Hotchkiss shell meant for the 37mm mle.1916 and it's identical US counterpart the M1916 37mm cannon.
The shell was built in Pinchart Deny, Paris and was part of Lot No. 195 made in January of 1917.

Thanks. Googling shit is always iffy, Ive googled stuff that I KNOW and had some wild results pop up.
/k/ is actually a lot more reliable in my opinion.
Plus you get the added entertainment of people suggesting you fuck yourself with it.
So these were like, deck guns? Early light flak?

It was an infantry support gun actually, the little guy could be broken down for transit or have wheels attached. In theory a handful of men could break one down, haul it to where it was needed and reassemble it. A handful of aircraft even carried it during the Great War, the autistic as hell René Fonck flew a SPAD S.XII with one of these guns firing through the propeller shaft.

They did, it was the precursor to the concept of an auto-cannon.
The issues with them were:
1: they didnt throw enough shrapnel to be effective anti-personel.
2: timed fuses were difficult to set, so as AA they werent great. Plus aircraft of the time werent so hot either so .30 and .50 cal machineguns were much better and more affordable AA options.
3: the armor peircing aspect was weak, outdated by advancements in armor.
The 37mm was a transient shell size that only remained relevant for 10 to 15 years.
Got replaced with shit like the higher velocity 20mm cannons, or the more preciseley fused 40mm cannons of ww2.
not gonna lie, from the thumbnail I thought it was .22 and you were 'avin a giggle
