How does the impact force compare to a FGM-148 Javelin warhead?
>>
>>31184870
no
>>
>>31184870

No. Poorly.

Weapon A is designed to blow up armor, weapon B is designed to fuck up personnel. There's very little overlap.
>>
>>31184870
A 60mm mortar round holds very little explosives and unlike the Javelin does not have a shaped charge. It wouldn't do anything against a tank. If you get lucky you could knock out some optics I guess.
>>
>>31184870
A 60mm mortar will hold 0.4-0.8lbs of Comp B. A Javelin missile's warhead weighs ~19lbs.
>>
>>31184870
It'd basically be like throwing a firecracker at someone. Might sting a little and could blind them if it hits just right, but it isn't gonna cause serious injury because it has no way to penetrate (either via projectile velocity or a shaped charge).
>>
>>31185138
>>31184913
>>31184883
If that's true, why were molotovs effective in combating tanks?

molotovs damage the engine
>>
>>31185733

Because the fire can suffocate the engine by starving it of oxygen, so the engine dies, and then as the tank sits there burning it becomes very hot to be inside, yet opening the hatches to salvation will only result in you being on fire
>>
>>31185733
Would you react differently if I
A) shot you in your bodyarmor
vs
B) set you on fire
>>
Probably something like this
https://youtu.be/zsWHBFxr2fI
>>
>>31187512
so...you're saying that a M224 Mortar could destroy a tank?
>>
>>31184870
It could incapacitate the tank depending on how thick the top armor is. The top portion is also where the armor is the weakest.

>why were molotovs effective in combating tanks
They aren't any more, you could drown a modern tank in napalm and the crew would still be fine.
>>
kek by the same logic, you could detonate a nuke next to a tank and it still wouldn't do shit to said tank
>>
>>31189803
how does it feel being a retard?
>>
>>31189706
damn that actor is actually on fire. that's some good production value.
>>
>>31189814
Shaddup. Where do you think you are?
>>
>>31184870
No, the mortar would not destroy a tank. Older APC, maybe. I forget the rha penetration factor for the M224 60mm but its not much. About the same as a 40mm HEDP grenade iirc. The Javelin makes use of shaped charges to penetrate armor specifically. It also is most effective when used in top-attack mode to hit lighter armor, but it is still much better at penetration, by design.
>>
>>31189695
not to my knowledge, but I am surprised that no one has created something like this.
>>
>>31189695
>>31190287

Bofors STRIX. Very little point to have an anti-tank munition without any guidance.
>>
>>31190374
pretty cool. is it actually effective and used, or is it some obscure equipment that no one cares about?
>>
>>31189728

>Our engine is on fire
>Anything flammable in the engine required to actually function is now gone (Bye hoses!)
>Can't see through optics
>Ammo starts cooking off
>Fine

This is excluding what happens to meat when you wrap it in metal and set it on fire.

Enough fire will fuck any tank.
Enough fire will fuck anything.
>>
>>31190738

oh boy

>Enough fire will fuck any tank.

yes as a lot, not a single molotov or even few

modern mbt are really resistant to fire on the outside
>>
>>31184870
It can destroy IFVs such as BMPs or Bradleys if its a direct hit. MBTs probably not.
>>
>>31190816
According to public sources, the Javelin has an RHA penetration capability of approx. 600mm. The best you get from a 60mm mortar round is about 140, but that is HE effect and not comparable. The standard RPG7 is about 260mm, and 40mm HEDP is around 70-80mm. At the very lightest a T90S turret has 350mm equivalent armor (560mm vs HEAT). By comparison, most AFVs have around 120mm armor or less.

A hard no on killing the tank.

>Feasibility and project definition studies began in 1983, as a joint private venture between FFV Ordnance and Saab Missiles. The first fully guided flight took place in 1988. FFV expected to complete development this year, and to receive a Swedish Army production contract shortly thereafter. The company reports considerable foreign interest, in particular from the US Marine Corps. STRIX has been in service with the Swedish and Swiss Armies since 1994.

Better but also incredibly silly question, what would direct fire from a 155mm howitzer do to a modern MBT?
>>
>implying molotov cocktails can take out a tank
>>
>>31192157

Artillery is effective vs armor. It would kill it, mobility kill, or at least really fuck up the crew.
>>
>>31192157

There's enough "dakka" in a 155mm round to destroy the tank if it hits the roof.

Direct fire, I'm not so sure about it. Definitely takes out the tank and damages it, but they did use stacks of 155mm rounds as IEDs in Iraq and it didn't completely shred the tank though. Might kill the crew despite that.
>>
>>31192207

There's always the question of kinetic energy though, IED has plenty of explosive power but if you hit a tank with a round that would otherwise travel 30 km, it is going to make a dent.

I bet he thinks the M224 is a 224mm mortar.

Also just learned that the largest mortar ever made was 914mm, Little David.

A 60mm mortar probably couldn't.
81mm mortar... Eh... Maybe not the most modern tanks, but 1950s-60s, maybe.
120mm would probably achieve a kill.

Even lighting a bonfire under a tank it's gonna take ages for it to do literally anything other than giving it an effective night camo.
Not to mention it's one of those "who would win 1,000,000,000 lions vs the sun"

Tops of tanks are weak areas. Tow missiles hit the top and explode.

https://youtu.be/04Q-ieBnPEo

Reactive armor may nullify a mortor but otherwise it would blow the hatches into the tank.
>>
How many 11C's are in this thread?
>>
>>31192978
Fuck no. The only thing we use WP for is obscuring and maybe antipersonnel. The most a 60mm could do to a tank is harass it, maybe.

Talvisota ( 1989 ) if you want to watch it just google Talvisota ( 1989 ) stream and voila.

can anyone tell me roughly how much explosive content a 120mm mortar round holds.

M934 has 6.59 lbs of composition B as its explosive filler.

60mm
Modern tank buttoned up : Not much, noise inside hull. If lucky optics or depending on type of tank commo or sensor.

Opened up tank ( IE round into a hatch and into hull ) Toast.

120 mm M934 6.59 lbs of Comp B

Former 11C here: not shit.

60mms won't even crater a road. They're strictly anti-personnel weapons, mostly for suppression and harassment if we're honest. Though airbursting 60mm will fuck your shit up if caught unprepared.

120mm OTOH is serious business and will demolish multi-story cinderblock buildings with a delay fuse. It's wound/kill radius is the equivalent of a 155 (50m kill/100m casualty) thanks to better angle of impact and more HE.
>>
>>31195157
>>31195066
>>31193113
okay, I am interested in this thread now. If a 60mm were to hit a WW2 M4 Sherman, would it destroy the tank?
>>
>>31195656
Probably not. If it was going to achieve a kill, it'd be on the engine deck, but I doubt it could.
>>
depends on the model of the tank, on older/less advanced tanks or APC's it could do some damage to the engine deck.
>>
>>31185733
They're not
>>
>>31184870
except for staged events, I doubt that this has ever happened.
>>
Has there ever been AP mortar rounds.

Say for instance for use against bunkers etc.
>>
>>31199131
there's this >>31192821
>>
>>31195157
This. Prox/NSB via M734 multi-option is used to destroy optics and external hardware when used in an FFE. Doctrine dictates the armour would bug when they start getting bracketed, and if they move in the direction of the mortar line or combat team, you'd better have heavy weapon attached to get your ass out of trouble.
>>
>>31189862

Imagine if that got a direct impact on an MBT.

It would leave a 1m sized hole straight through before detonating and launching the entire carcass.
>>
>>31189728
uh no
>>
>>31192157
Mobility kill at the very least, it would probably penetrate top armor if it hit right on. It definitely would damage the tank pretty badly in any direct hit, since it carries 13lbs of comp b.
>>

they aren't now, but they were before
