Should also be noted that while Valhalla was for the most part a welcome afterlife it was not actually a reward. The inhabitants became part of Odin's ghost army. Destined to fight and fail during Ragnarok.

The greatest and bravest warriors (not the best, most honorable, or most noble people) where plucked from the battlefield by the Valkyrie.

But seriously, it wasn't warrior/white power heaven. It was something similar to an eternal military posting with great benefits. You where still conscripted like it or not. And you where still going to super die fighting giants and wolves and lava monsters and shit beside your god at the end of the world.

Look, after a battle the Valkyrie come around to take the best fighters who die . Or you go to folkvangr and fish for eternity.

If you went to valhöll you fought all day, possibly died, were brought back to life in the evening and had a great feast. In the morning you fought again. This ensured you were the best warrior you could be during the end times. Then you lost the last battle and the world would begin again.
If you didn't die IN BATTLE. You don't get to go.
